if all the wild card races stay the way they are now for the rest of the season i don't know if it'll be that big of a deal. i think people would start to get really angry if you have a situation like in 2009 where the red sox (95 wins) would've had to play the rangers (87 wins) in a 1 game playoff and could've missed the post season if they had 1 bad game.

because they won 95 games and were 8 games ahead of the rangers in the wild card standing. they had room to breathe at the end of september. that's stupid that a team like that could have that kind of a lead on a tuesday and then no longer have it on a wednesday and miss the ALDS.

Most of the wild card races have been decided by a game or two. That Red Sox-Rangers example is extreme. While I am not a fan of a 1 game series, I do like the idea of giving the division winner some sort of advantage against a wild card team.

I've always hated that 5 game division series format as it hurts teams with deeper rotations and favors teams with 1-2 big time pitchers. All MLB series should be 7 games and they should drop the 2nd wild card. I know MLB is sensitive about getting the playoffs concluded before the end of October, but they should start the season earlier (or shorten the season all together) so that the playoffs can be extended.

Baseball is the only sport where divisions really matter (No one really cares if you win the NFC South or NBA Atlantic) so I can why they want to give the division winners such an edge.

Still, the two best teams in a given league will often be from the same division.

haha his season ends at 501 PA, just 1 short of the number needed to qualify for the batting title based on the 3.1 PA per team game rule. if a player doesn't qualify, his stats are padded out with hitless PAs until he does. melky will lose ~.0005 from his average, so andrew mccutchen has to hit .320 the rest of the season to stay ahead. melky can still win the batting title. i hope cutch tanks
