my thinking was always if they are on patrol and traveling the same rate as everyone else they see a limited number of cars. if they are moving a little faster than everyone else they see more cars/run more tags/cover more ground 10/13/2012 11:03:49 PM |

What different rounds have you trained or qualified with in your time with the police? What do you prefer and what do you carry and why? Same question for pistols. Do they require you to carry a specific configuration? 10/14/2012 11:32:31 PM |

When I worked for the state, I qualified with a .40 S&W M&P. Some job classifications within the department were issued long guns but my job classification did not. The .40 was a solid round for the purposes of my job but the training provided left a bit to be desired. As far as configuration goes, we were required to carry it in the issued holster but we had some leeway as to how we set it up (low, mid, high ride or paddle). aside from the issued holster, we had the freedom to carry the rest of our gear to our liking. I ditched the issued mag carrier for one that was more friendly when wearing a suit or when covered by a shirt or jacket. 10/15/2012 7:11:03 AM |

Our issued sidearm is the Gen 4, Glock 22 w/ TLR-1, Remington 870 and Colt Carbine (some M4's here amongst us).
You can carry any approved sidearm as long as its between .9mm and .45 and isn't single action only. You can also carry any approved rifle as long as its .223, and isn't NFA. You can also carry any approved shotgun. You carry anything other than issued at your own expense.
Currently, I carry an issued Gen 3, Glock 22 w/ Surefire X300, an issued Remington 870 w/ extended tube, an issued Colt rifle w/ an Aimpoint PRO (my own optic) and my own Sig P232.
My sidearm is carried in an issued Safairland 6360 (which I have two, both leather and STX depending on my duty). You are required to carry at least 1 extra magazine while in uniform, but I carry the 2 and as many as 6, again depending on my duty.
For the sidearm, we shoot .40S&W 180gr Speer GoldDots*. For my Sig, I shoot .380 90gr Speer Golddots. For the shotgun, we shoot Federal tactical buckshot, Federal Truball slugs and I'm certified in less lethal ammuntion (i.e. bean bags). For the rifle, we shoot 55gr Federal bonded soft point.
*If you carry a personally owned duty gun, you have to shoot GoldDots. If you are smart, you buy a .40S&W and you get all the free ammo you want otherwise its all out of pocket.
For off duty, you can carry any sidearm you want between .25 and like .44; you must day and night qualify with both weapons annually.
I just carry what they issue because someone smarter than me made the decision. Also, if you are involved in a shooting, crime, etc with your weapons, they are seized as evidence and it can take -if you even get them back - awhile to have them returned. So by carrying issued equipment, there is no financial loss.
I'm required to a shoot a 90% on the State course, both day and night, in a target that fits inside of the 4 ring (or is the 3?) of the standard State scoring target (we shoot a modified course on a smaller target than required by the State). We are also required to night qualify with rifle which is not required by the State.
This year, I have probably spent close to 200hrs on the flat range and shoothouse and we have some of the best firearms training programs in the State right now.

So I just got a citation for expired registration/inspection. It was due in June and I guess I thought I'd already taken care of it. Obviously that's my fault and I'm an idiot and I'm not disputing that at all.
I'm going tomorrow to get an inspection and new registration. I have a citation for over $200 and a court date in November. My questions are:
Is there anything I can do to get the citation fee waived or reduced? $200 is a lot and I'm poor and worthless.
Also, is there anything else I should be concerned about? Is this something that would affect insurance, or is it basically over once I have valid registration/inspection and have paid any citation fees?
Thanks 10/16/2012 7:27:49 PM |

It's not a moving violation, so it won't affect your insurance.
Get it inspected and registered and they'll usually waive the fines. You don't even have to wait for your court date, just go down there on your day off and ask for the traffic court. 10/16/2012 7:46:42 PM |

Cop seems like a real tough guy pummeling his face with the but of a baton while two dudes hold him down. Clearly it's for retribution and not arrest since he just lets the guy go at the end. 10/16/2012 8:46:31 PM |

I would suspect that they should have immediately rolled him and cuffed him. The beating wasn't to control him to put him in custody since they just let the guy roll around alone after. Instead, they just gave the guy a payday. 10/16/2012 9:20:22 PM |

Legal. I'm sure (hope) he got arrested. Nobody (cop or civilian) has the right to put their hands on you w/o cause. If someone tries to hurt you, you hurt them back. The only way to change peoples minds is blunt force trauma. If you watch, once the guy goes down, he is still actively resisting and actively assaulting. Once he is done, its over.10/16/2012 10:26:05 PM |

Here's some reading on the topic
http://www.lawofficer.com/article/magazine-feature/moonlighting-civil-liability
Quote : | "In determining the color of law requirement, officers should first look to their state statutes. Some states have enacted statutes that determine the officer's duty to act while off duty. Unfortunately, officers working in states that have not enacted such legislation must rely on the courts interpretation of the color of law requirement.
Note: [T]he fact that a police officer is on or off duty, or in or out of uniform is not controlling. It is the nature of the act performed, not the clothing of the actor or even the status of being on duty, or off duty, which determines whether the officer has acted under color of law. Generally, the courts look to the following factors in determining whether the officer is under color of law:
...
Conclusion
While moonlighting as security guards for private security firms is an excellent way to earn extra income, law enforcement officers must be aware they may find themselves civilly liable, not as a private security guard, but as a police officer, for their off-duty conduct. Police officers should know their respective state statutes and their law enforcement agency's policies governing secondary employment. Further, police officers should determine whether they have liability coverage for secondary employment and/or which entity is providing liability coverage. Officers must know answers to these types of questions before deciding to moonlight." |

it's over and he is just left there to roll around and grab a weapon while the cops back is turned.
basically, my point was that from my perspective it look like the cop lost his temper and put himself in danger unnecessarily because of it. Had he remained calm and arrested the guy that danger would not exist. I'm curious how an officers opinion of him beating the guy and them leaving him is, surely that cant be safe or smart.

I don't understand what you mean? How/why does reporting to the precinct mean anything. I can't just show up at an off-duty job, I would have to radio into communications and tell them location, time, etc.
And to clarify a few things, most agencies have a restriction on where you can work. For example, here I can't work at any place that has more than 51% alcohol sales, for another agency or any other place that would cause a conflict of interest.
We are required to have all our equipment, be in uniform (unless it calls for soft clothes), and respond to any calls for service and/or emergencies.
We don't "moonlight" as security at bars, or at a warehouse, etc. If we did, the department wouldn't back us legally if we did anything an a law enforcement capacity.
When we do work a restaurant, concert, etc, we don't enforce establishment rules. We are only there to take law enforcement action if necessary. For example, the concert wants someone ejected for heckling. Ok, the concert people can eject him for violating policy (civil). If the patron says, I'm not leaving I could arrest you for trespass (law enforcement matter).10/17/2012 10:57:33 AM |

Fair enough, its not easy to conceal in a pocket unless your pockets are huge.
(Maybe a s&w shield or kahr in .40?)
Odd why they won't issue you nfa weapons, seems like a 11-14 inch carbine or shotgun would be most ideal for police work. 10/21/2012 3:49:01 PM |

There are some issued M4's but only to the most senior guys on the team and we have two NFA shotguns that are used for breaching. Had MP5's a few years back but they were traded out for the Colt Carbines. I like the full-size 870 and have trained out to 100 yards on it w/ slugs. But yes, an SBR would be far more ideal than the Carbine in close quarters.

If that's what he told you, he is probably right. Different court districts in this State don't act uniformly.
Quote : | "Why would a police officer ever need to hit anything at 100 yards with a 12ga slug?" |
You don't, but a man's got to know his limitations. It might be the only weapon you have access to and need to take a head shot at 25 yards w/ a hostage taker w/ it. Just like in our basic rifle qualification school, we shoot past 300 yards, but in LE work, I would never take a shot that far. Hell even at 100 yards, on situational targets, its nearly impossible to make out the threat. Then again, most police shootings happen w/in 7 feet or less. Marksmanship out at those yards has carryover to the close in stuff.
