^ You're pretty much a sandy vagina in all things related to sports in general. Maybe it's because you lose money a lot...I don't know...but you come off as a bitch.

On an unrelated note...was I the only one that thought UConn could have been called for a lot more fouls?? I know we got to the line a decent amount, but I felt like they let a lot of shit go uncalled...and mostly to our detriment since we kept pounding it inside. Didn't see any discussion on it and I don't usually cry ref...so was wondering if anyone else saw it.

Great win. REALLY glad to finally see us play hard against a decent opponent after a dismal first 8 minutes or so.

Only problem is that I was too amped up to fall asleep right away afterward

One other thing I will say too is that the last two games have been good measures for how we play from behind and I like what I have seen from that perspective.

I wouldn't. He probably got no calls on 2 or 3 at most. He's done a good job of holding back and not putting himself in bad situations.

The man deserves to shoot some FTs with the work he puts in down there.

We need to take care of Duke, UNC, and Stanford to regain some respect. The rest of our schedule is pretty easy from here out...
This was a gutted UConn team that wont/cant even make the NCAA tourney. We need more quality wins badly, and I'm not sure they qualify as one

Quote :
"NEW YORK -- Richard Howell was dazed after C.J. Leslie inadvertently popped him with a flailing arm off a first-half rebound.

The senior forward came out of the game at the dead ball, staggered back to the bench, sat down and was given a full workup by the North Carolina State athletic training staff.

They tested his balance, eyesight and strength to see if he had suffered a concussion.

He didn’t. Howell said he was scared for a moment, since he had suffered a concussion against Maryland as a sophomore.

The tingling and the numbing in his upper body had him nervous. But it started to subside and all he had was a stinger in his shoulder. He told Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried that he could play in the second half.

[+] Enlarge
NC State's Richard HowellBrad Penner/USA TODAY SportsRichard Howell had 13 points and 10 rebounds against Connecticut, mainly in the second half.
Good decision.

If Howell continues to play the way he did in the second half against Connecticut on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic, the Wolfpack have a shot to live up to their expectations.

Howell had a double-double -- in the second half -- with 11 of his 13 points and all of his 10 boards coming in the final 20 minutes of NC State’s much-needed 69-65 victory over the Huskies at Madison Square Garden.

“He’s our blue-collar guy, our most consistent guy except for when he gets in foul trouble," said NC State assistant coach Bobby Lutz. “He gives us great energy. He’s undersized, but he’s relentless and has great enthusiasm and productivity."

Guard Lorenzo Brown, wing Leslie and sharpshooter Scott Wood were NC State’s headline names heading into the season, along with freshman Rodney Purvis. Howell tended to be overlooked.

But if the Wolfpack are to be ACC champs as predicted, Howell must be the anchor of this team. NC State hadn’t played well yet, losing badly to Oklahoma State in Puerto Rico, nearly dropping a game to UNC-Asheville and then losing respectably at Michigan last week.

The Huskies didn’t defend the Wolfpack well but still knocked NC State back a number of times. That is, until Howell became a beast on the boards.

“He’s a monster," said Wood. “What can I say? He’s the best rebounder out there. He’s a great player for us. He works so hard in practice, and if he keeps doing what he’s been doing, we’re going to be a dangerous team."

If Howell doesn’t play in the second half, the Huskies might have won this game, with Enosch Wolf playing well enough inside to cause NC State fits. Had NC State lost this game, there would have been ample second-guessing about the true potential of this squad.

“Whatever coach wants me to do to be a difference-maker, I’ll do it," said Howell. “This was huge for us. It’s definitely a step closer to what we want to be. We lost to Oklahoma State, Michigan and didn’t beat UNC-Asheville by what we should have. We learned from it and progressed."

Duke is the class of the ACC. North Carolina is young, inexperienced and a bit of an unknown right now. NC State is in line with Miami, Maryland and suddenly surging Virginia Tech in a wide-open ACC race come January.

NC State still has oodles of talent but will succeed only if Howell is a constant presence in the paint. The flash plays by Leslie and Purvis, the 3-pointers by Wood or the drives by Brown (although he still turns the ball over too much) are all necessary. But none of it is as important as Howell patrolling the paint.

Reaching the Sweet 16 last season was a surprise. But if the Wolfpack are going to replicate that run, they must defend the drive, shore up on 3s and control the backboard more effectively. Gottfried said before the game that he was still figuring this club out as the veterans adapt to the heralded newcomers. Howell showed his teammates his toughness Tuesday by playing through pain and discomfort. NC State is a work in progress, which puts even more emphasis on such a valued talent."

Vandy gave us good minutes...he just wasn't needed in the 2nd half. CJL and Howell weren't in foul trouble and they were both playing great. Why would you put him in??

Oh...I'll re-iterate that the refs let UConn beat the fuck out of Howell. I just saw that he only shot three free throws...THREE FREE THROWS!!! He was getting hacked all night long. That's ridiculous.

I think by the end of the year we won't automatically cringe whenever Vandy comes in, and by next season we'll be comfortable starting Vandy at center while we work to get Anya and Washington up to speed. I mean, it won't be pretty, but it may not be a fucking dumpster fire if we're forced to start Vandy some of the season as a senior.

If Randle signs it's largely a moot point.

I like the way we've used Vandy the last two games. Put him in for a stretch in the first half to save Howell or Leslie some fouls, and then only bring him in if someone fouls out in the second half. That should be the formula going forward.

Our comeback in the first half happened when Vandenburg was in (I think we went on 9-0 run or something, i think Lewis might have been running the point for most of it too)

The guy hasn't shown a single sign that he will continue to get better. He wasn't bad last night, but part of the reason why we think that is because we have absolutely no expectations of the kid at this point. He is fine for an extra five fouls and a body on D, but he is a liability for rebounding (which is ridiculous since he is 7ft tall) and on offense. I hope I am wrong because I like the kid, but if he ever plays more than the marginal role he is doing now--even next year--we are in dire straights.

Yeah, Vandy did a nice job staying in decent position for most of his time in the game last night. Defensively, the coaches just need to get through to him that he is huge and just needs to be in position with his hands up and he can alter shots and get rebounds.

Perfect example was the shot Leslie blocked that started a fast break during our run. Vandy forced an off balance shot just by being there to defend the rim and CJ had an easy block from the weak side to get the break going.

He also seemed to have a better idea of when to go into the paint on offense and when to stay out at the high post. He saw Leslie draw a double team on one block and rolled down to the opposite block to get an easy dunk.

It is a pretty small sample size, but if we can get a few quality plays like those every game and give our front line a 5-6 minute breather, then he'll be serving his purpose.

Next year, Vandy will be our only true big man that isn't a freshman, so yeah, he'll probably get more time than he is now. (unless CJL stays?)

First things first - We had a legit WOLF-PACK chant going in NY in the Garden...That's pretty awesome, as a basketball fan!

Second, and more importantly,...(WARNING: WORDS!!!)

Jesus this SPORTS TALK community needs to get itself together...A lot of great points about complaining PLAY to PLAY (so unnecessary). This is how basketball works, it's a game of runs - some for your team, some against your team. Give the guys a chance to play through it, Christ! You guy's pile up on our best players because they let a guy score when they get beat. It happens, but the alternative is to foul the player out of frustration and give them potential 3 point plays...which is what we have done in the past (and is a sign of immaturity especially EARLY in games). Zo gets scored on once and the GD sky is falling and we aren't going to make the tourney EHRMAHGERD!!! Give Zo some slack - he is not a natural 1, he is going to play in the good times and bad with a style that is not what a perfect PG would play like - right now its tough, but he is getting better every game - we are 7 games in!! There are 3 new guys in rotation in this offense, 3 new personalities to manage. His style works in our favor but can also work against us at times, but let it happen, we will come out on top more and more as we go. The personnel around him has to learn to play off of him just as much as he needs to learn to play to their strengths. He has proven he can get the job done, even on an off night. Notice, his shot started falling tonight..notice he was feeding Calvin directly more this game...its early, and we are showing more potential every time out. We are learning...

Consider this: we have 3 new young talented players injected in the lineup...to gel takes time. (See Miami Heat last year - the reality is it takes game experience to find your best lineups and know how to operate in situations...it doesnt just happen on talent alone. Practice doesn't prepare you for that - a good team can beat great talent any night. It is incredibly difficult in real life to bypass this process). You have to stumble - a lot - to figure out how to walk together. We have dynamic players that have to learn to play together, and they are doing that. Our ceiling is still undetermined, and preseason hype is a disease that is causing us to think we are better than we actually are based on talent alone. Thats ok. stop freaking out. Stop being the stereotype that kills this fanbase and the talent that we have representing us, please? Rome was not built in a day. We have the foundation and we haven't come close to peaking, but hardly ever does that happen with only 7 games under your belt...I'm sorry if that is surprising to you.

and finally, TreeTwista10 needs more credit for posts like these, which save my sanity reading some of this nonsense and give support to the notion that there are still folks who understand the bigger picture, not just our current record 7 games in.

^^certainly don't want to imply that ALL criticism is unfounded. We make plenty of mistakes and we have plenty of room for improvement.
I also don't think I am the only one noticing the unrealistic and constant criticism of individual plays though; be it a turnover, a missed shot, or just the other team making a basket...these things happen, and individually are made out to reflect a falling sky and a general 'i told you so'/'i knew it' style of response that is - for lack of a better term - ugly.

I agree. It would be great to sub him in at the end of close games on a defensive possession. But he needs to block some shots first and earn it.

This is a tautology.

My advice is to stay out of game threads. People drink. Also, very unbalanced people drink. I like to read the whole thing quickly the next day to get a Faulkneresque stream-of-consciousness tapestry in my mind of the game's effect on tww's fragile psyche. Also sometimes it's fun to pound a few Natty Daddies and contribute my own mind vomit of ugly emotions. But there's no reason to take any of it seriously.

Bill Bixby: Single best basketball post on here in a long time. Games take time to develop. Players take time to develop. Teams take time to develop. Jumping on a player or the team or the coach for one play here or there especially early in games or early in seasons is ridiculous. Pro or college ball doesn't matter. These things take time.

Was at the game last night. We started slow and Napier was hot, but we took the hit and battled back. Then we didn't fold in the second half when we were going toe to toe with them. Our guys showed composure and got past a good, not great, but experience college basketball team in a big game setting.

Now we go back to work and take on a mixed bag of foes, before conference season starts. I will gladly take a few losses early on if it makes us stronger when it matters.

Went to the game last night. UCONN fans are DICKS. period. Brother Jimmys before and drinking with a LOT of wolfpackers and former NBA player Cliff Robinson was fun, having empty seats all night and getting kicked out by security trying to sit in them is a different story. For those who showed up in the Garden, way to support your pack!
