I still don't get the Purvis hate. He's not a seemingly bad guy, he has been extremely nice to everyone (even congratulated Desmond Lee) and is still going to classes at State (no APR ding).

It just didn't work out here. It happens. He didn't think it was the best fit at the time, much like Josh Davis, and he moved on.

I guess people can cling to PackPride and Pack Insider #sources that say he was a trouble maker but there really wasn't much evidence of that.

You don't understand why people are disappointed when a highly rated recruit leaves their favorite school after one season?

I don't think "hate" is accurate but there won't be very many State fans pulling for Purvis to succeed at a different school.

4th one from left on the bottom appears to be the one that was instantly slammed by the fans and never saw the court.

No hate...just disappointed. And not a "fuck, he was going to be awesome for us!" disappointed.

Just disappointed that he couldn't deal with the fact that he wasn't producing and that's why he wasn't starting. I don't mind if a scrub wants to go to a shitty team so he can get some burn. I do mind if a guy thinks he should be playing more when he isn't deserving of the playing time. Work on your game and come back with a chip on your shoulder. Purvis needed to work on his handle and his shot. He's got the physical tools. Going to UConn isn't going to make him a better player. He could have worked on his game in Raleigh...the school he committed to and put in a good amount of work getting him eligible to play college basketball.

That's all.

I was more talking about the PP and twitter hate from State fans, but that is probably my own fault for reading that site.

To me, if a guy doesn't think he's a good fit its better for both party's he leave.

Also I'm pysched about Lee and potentially Davis for the inverse of that. They are both more mature players who would know what style they fit with and would choose us based on that.

^^ fair enough, though I think Purvis does fit in at UConn with the offense Ollie ran last year better than he did here with the high post offense.

[Edited on April 9, 2013 at 2:44 PM. Reason : Lee is a better off fit]

do we know that, though?

if that's where he thinks he'll be a better fit and where he'll be happiest, who are we to bemoan him for it? he doesn't owe us jack

I agree for the most part...although apparently we did a lot of work in getting him eligible to play. Not saying (1) it wasn't also in our best interests and (2) another school wouldn't have done the same. But we did put time and effort into it and the school was very close to us...so if he had gone somewhere across the country (or up in the Northeast)...they might have had a difficult time getting info from a small school in Raleigh in order to get him eligible and he might not have even been able to play this year.

Quote :
"do we know that, though?"

Eh...to a certain extent. But it's not like we were playing him out of position or not giving him the chance to succeed. The bottom line is that he needs to develop a better handle and work on his shot. Playing in a different offense is going to improve those two things. That's what practice and individual drills are for.

At State he was given plenty of playing time, open shots from defenses keying in on Wood/Brown/Leslie/Howell, and open space on our fast breaks. He started off pretty good (hit a ton of open threes down in Maui)...but in the 2nd half of the season he didn't finish well at the room, was starting to miss his threes, and was turning the ball over. He was also a shitastic free throw shooter.

I actually do hope he succeeds wherever he goes. But he could have done it here. I think he just got pouty because he lost his starting job and his playing time dwindled. For someone with his abilities, I would have respected him more if he had worked harder and proven he deserved more time.

That one on the far right is a bona-fide Herb Sendek-Damien Wilkins-Anthony Grundy-Kenny Inge throwback!

Why does Wood have one?

If we're putting stock in kids' tweets, it probably means lewis will leave with him. but there's supposedly a dozen other people inquiring about the job, i'm not too worried about it yet.

(and yeah, there's video out there of Lewis dunking in high school)

Why has Lutz got so much hate recently? Because our team sucks on D? Everything I've heard and read says he has amazing basketball iq and great scout. My Charlotte alumni friends speak very highly of him.

^^I haven't seen any hate. Just a general indifference if he leaves. It's clear he wants another head coaching gig and he is old enough that he is gonna be sniffing around every coaching vacancy. If not now, soon.

Besides that, it's generally understood (although it might be totally wrong) that he was in charge of our defense and we all know how that worked out this year hence the "who cares?" attitude.

There's a difference between making good defensive gameplans and getting your team to execute defensive gameplans. I feel like Lutz etc. are good scouts and come up with solid defensive strategies.

I think it's also obvious that our team last year couldn't or wasn't interested in executing them.

Unfortunately, getting players to buy in and execute is a large part of the job. You have to be a good teacher as much as a good X's and O's guy.

^true. but from what i gather, having lutz as an associate head coach is definitely an asset. It seems that we have a pretty good staff with five guys with head coaching-experience (Early, Moxley and Farmer). Maybe they just need their guys/recruits to buy-in?

I was looking back at the '12-'13 thread for lulz and found this gem:

Quote :
"
It's strange because I don't think our team is as good as the rankings but then I compare our roster to Michigan...and it's not even close. I'll take our guys every time. Seriously, Trey Burke? Zo shits on him.

That game is still a toss up because it's at their place and early but we have a much better team"

And Zo didnt take the leap I expected him to.

Yeah, we're all pretty frustrated at how much talent was squandered this year.

Turns out that Trey Burke shits on Zo, not the other way around.

We shot better than Michigan and they held the reputation as the best shooting team in many years. Our shooting was just overshadowed by our inability to defend, rebound and coach.

Zo vs burke advantage them
wood vs stouskous advantage us
warren vs hardaway advantage them
leslie vs robinson III advantage us
howell vs mcgary advantage us

Purvis > levert
Lewis > albrecht
Vandy < Morgan
TDT < Horford

so their frontcourt bench was better but not backcourt.

Are you sure? We are talking about November perception. Everyone knows Michigan is a better team and TDT left early. Haven't you guys realized by now its not just about talent? We had similar talent levels.

Can we not speculate on realistic TJ Warren expectations yet? If this guy is the real deal future NBA gunslinger, he should be able to handle being the focus of defense while also getting 17 + ppg.

^yep

^^While I like that too, I just don't think that's gonna be the case with the offense next year, I think it will revolve around TJ getting 20+ points and making first-team all-ACC for us to even have a chance.

I recognize that and understand it. But I'd rather at least be closer to that and have a couple other guys average 8,9, or 10 points each. I think Lewis, Lee, and Turner could do that. The other reminds me too much of the Erick Green/Va Tech model. It's too much pressure on one guy to produce every game.

Not to mention team morale when the coach says the offense is going exclusively through one guy only. He mentioned after the season ended a failure to get everyone to buy in to the program. I guess I can't imagine having more success with everyone "buying in" doing it that way.

It's not an either/or. It's not either Warren is are entire team, or 6 players score double-digts. Warren can score 20 ppg and leave 40-60 points to be shared among the other guys. Nobody's saying that Warren will be Greene and the rest of the team will be the rest of VTech's roster this year.

Looks like we'll play Pitt twice next year. I assume our two permanent partners are UNC and Wake, so that leaves one other team for us to play a home-and-away.

Anyone seen any other ACC schedules for next year?
