was Cat the first player for us to score 30 in a half since DT did it in the first half on the way to 57 points against Buffalo State? Buffalo State also finished with 88 points in that game like Wake did today. State finished with 144 points though lol.

Cat Barber got mentioned in the video for being one of the four players nominated for Capital One Performance of the Week videos. None of the other players broke into the 30 point range. Andy Katz said Tyler Ulis should get it, then said, "Sorry Mark Gottfried, but I don't see how Cat Barber can be ACC Player of the Year when you are down at the bottom of the standings." Hey Andy Katz go tell that to Erick Green!

Can't be Superman every game. He had some shitty turnovers and missed wide open jumpers in the first half. We could have been up double digits at the break if he was playing average. Definitely hurts his POY chances...his two biggest clunkers have been against the two best teams in the league. 2/16/2016 7:20:00 AM |

Disclaimer: This is going to piss a lot of people off because i piss myself off just by thinking about it but it must be considered.
We had a choice between a pg who was mostly a scorer and a pg who was mostly a creator and chose the scoring pg. Its turned out great because we got more than what we wanted. We wanted a good scoring pg and got an elite scoring point guard. In terms of the choice we made and the reasons we made the choice, things could not have turned out better.
We didn't want a pg who was not good at scoring but was create-first.
Now, when we look at our team, we have the best scorer in the league and one of the best scorers in the whole country, but he doesn't really make anyone else better and the team is as bad as it could be overall.
I would much rather have a team led by a pg who isn't a good scorer, but runs an offense that spreads the scoring around and makes everyone better instead of relying on one guy and mostly an isolation offense. I know its easy and angries people to talk about things in hindsight, but it seems our priorities being more around having an offense centered around individual scoring has lead to us producing teams where we have one or 2 exceptional isolation players and other players don't seem to be engaged as much as they should be.

Maybe we would suck either way. I just wanted to talk about the general idea of a scoring point guard vs creating point guard and not focus so much on lewis specifically. Lewis is just an example of what we don't value. We should be able to have a mature discussion about that.
No one can know how we would be but one would expect a true point guard whose distribution skills are equivalent to cat's scoring skills to help everyone else develop their own scoring ability, comfort in the offense, and overall engagement in the game.
Maybe we would be worse, maybe we would be better, or maybe we would be the same, maybe the team would have different players all together. I'm not concluding on anything because we don't have enough information. I just want to have the discussion. Thats what forums should be about. 2/26/2016 3:02:37 PM |

well, gottfried doesn't want a PG who can't be a major offensive factor. he's made that clear, so this discussion is stupid. 2/26/2016 3:38:14 PM |

Thats actually the premise of the discussion. Are you incapable of discussing alternatives to reality?

i understand you...and kinda agree with the overall notion that pass-first PGs may be more desirable. my only objection would be that this team, in particular, wouldn't really be any better (IMO would be worse) with Lewis. Lewis is definitely pass-first and put guys in a position to score. but in his freshman year he was dishing passes to CJL, Wood, Howell, Purvis, TJW, etc and in his second year he was feeding TJW and Turner. if you do an even swap - Cat for Lewis - i don't think he really has anybody to pass to besides Abu. is Lewis really gonna make Beejay and Freeman that much better? i can't see that happening. his passing almost certainly isn't gonna make Caleb and Mav more consistent, better shooters. this team just doesn't have the personnel for Lewis to create and make things happen for other players.2/26/2016 5:52:11 PM |

If we had Lewis instead of Cat, we would be BC bad. With Cat we are a below avg team that has also had some bad bounces.
Also if I remember, Lewis made Cat look like a defensive star 2/26/2016 7:25:43 PM |

I'm not talking about Lewis I'm talking more about the philosophy in general. Lewis did not pan out so I'm saying if we had a pass first pg who developed his court leadership as much as cat has developed his scoring. Lewis is not a pass-first equivalent to Cat. Cat on a good day is basically allen iverson. Sure, these short of players take a lot of attention for the defense, get assists, and generate offense, but theres a huge difference between that and a guy who actively creates opportunities for others.
Its about rhythm and engagement. I think these players could be a lot better than they are if someone was setting them up in a structured offense. Its sort of awkward watching a guy dribble and then getting the ball if he gets stuck. Theres a big difference.2/27/2016 2:19:25 PM |
