Is there anyway that an unbeaten FSU team doesn't make the playoff?? If a one-loss Oregon team can jump them...then I'm sure a one-loss Alabama that sweeps MSU, Auburn, and whoever wins the SEC-East will jump them. What is Miss St barely loses to Alabama and then crushes Ole Miss to the end the season...do they stay ahead of FSU?

It would be a big 'ol "fuck you" to the ACC to leave our conference unbeaten out of the playoffs.

^No way that happens. For one thing, FSU's strength of schedule will improve with wins over Miami and whoever is they play in the ACC championship game. I think the committee is ranking the teams on what they've currently done. Not who they've yet to play/beat. So if FSU keeps winning they'll be fine.

^^the answer is 4th if we're being realistic. You just listed all the teams so I don't know how there was doubt in your mind about FSU being able to make it.

Yes there are more than 3 teams who can finish ahead of FSU but with the games left against each other theres little more than 3 could be ahead of them...unless they lose. Alabama is the only team that can pass them without removing a team ahead of them. Unless something crazy happens

There could be a wild scenario in which the coastal teams collapse to fall out of the rankings and the coastal winner comes from a huge tie break. In that scenario, FSU has no good games left.

Alabama beats Miss State Baylor destroys kansas state and Ohio state destroys Nebraska. All of these teams win out with style points each week.

At this point FSU would be 4th behind Miss State Oregon and Alabama. If FSU looks bad and barely beats Miami Florida and ACC championship game, the voters could do the same thing they just did with oregon and put TCU, Baylor, or Ohio State ahead of FSU.

That would be completely absurd but the fact that oregon jumped FSU is the reason there needs to be an 8 or even 12 team playoff. These teams are all so close to each other.

I would pick alabama to win it all in an 8-12 team playoff and they might not even make the 4 team playoff.

We can't ignore the fact that the big10 and big12 champions will likely be left out despite having the same record as the 2 sec teams in and the pac12 champion. Those people have every reason to claim SEC bias even knowing the SEC is much better. Its just a shitty system.

12 teams would be way too many. The point of the playoff is to determine the best team in the country. Has there ever been a year when people thought the 11th or 12th team was legitimately the best? Your proposal would have three loss teams in the playoff. Plus, the 5-12 seeds would have to play four games to win the title under that setup.

I think 6 would be ideal. Have it mirror one half of the NFL playoff bracket, with the top two teams getting byes. 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5, then 1 plays the lowest seed remaining, while 2 plays the highest.

Anyone else surprised FSU is only giving 2 to Miami? I figured it would be at least a full field goal, closer to 6 even.

If Vegas made the playoff rankings instead of fucking Condoleeza Rice, FSU wouldn't even make an 8-team playoff, if the season ended today.

Doesn't matter what you or I say. FSU will get in if they go undefeated. Doesn't mean they are one of the best 4 teams.

Also you have to consider they won the title last year so not only are you shutting out an undefeated team, but also the defending champ.

Well, yeah. But that's the point of the playoff. So it doesn't happen again.

It would be interesting to see what happens to a one loss FSU team...especially a 1 loss FSU team that still wins the ACC.

Oregon lost at home as 3 touchdown favorite. I don't see why the committee is letting that slide.

Because they beat three other ranked teams by double digits?

And FSU probably should have lost to Clemson and Notre Dame at home?

And they have trailed in the third quarter against a really shitty team (us) and in the 4th quarter against an unranked team (Louisville).

While I may not agree with it, I can definitely see the reasoning. I'm kind of surprised it was Oregon instead of Alabama (and Alabama being 5th as well).

I also wouldn't be surprised to see FSU ball out in the playoffs and win the whole thing. But they've looked shaky as fuck so far this year.

Oregon lost to a team that has turned out to be pretty good

whatever the line was when they beat Oregon should have absolutely no bearing on anything right now

FSU has beaten 4 ranked teams this year and two were on the road. That Notre Dame win is as (or more) impressive than the Ducks catching the Spartans early in week 2 of the season.

More importantly, they didn't.

Quote :

So trailing on the road but still winning is now a legit excuse to ding a team? That's way too harsh.

I just don't believe in Oregon. I think that whole program is smoke and mirrors. They're the Dantonio Phoenix Suns of CFB. Flashy regular season fun and gun, but will get exposed vs legit teams in the postseason.

^I agree. If you're comparing 2014 FSU to 2013 FSU...then sure, FSU isn't as good. But they deserve credit for what they've done. Beating Clemson (one of the nation's best defenses) without Winston is pretty impressive. he Notre Dame win is a very good win. Comeback win on the road against a strong Louisville team is also impressive.

I only see FSU beating 2 low ranked teams, Notre Dame and Clemson, where you getting 4 ranked wins?

Are you counting Ok St, and Lou? Just because they are ranked when the game is played doesn't make it beating a ranked team/quality win at this point, especially an early season game when the polls are worthless.

When counting "wins vs ranked teams" it's usually normal to count games against teams that were ranked at the time of the game, I believe.

That is fine for statistical work but you can't just use that then to defend a team blindly and not actually look at the win and who it was actually against, just like beating a team early in the year that goes on to move into the rankings should benefit.

I'm fine if people think FSU should be in, if you are a person who just believes in that undefeated in till you lose mentality. I'd rather actually watch the teams play, and judge based on more than just giving a team a pass because they were a champion last year because they haven't been impressive to many times this year. One or two flat games is one thing, but they aren't pounding weak teams the way other schools are and they don't have quality wins that compare either.

Just doing the "eye-ball test" FSU hasn't been very impressive this year. I've watched all the top 10 teams play, and I've been more impressed with TCU, Baylor, 'Bama, Oregon, even Auburn and Ole Miss to some degree. Throw in the way Arizona St. dismantled Notre Dame and all the sudden FSU really hasn't done much impressive this year. You are putting them in really based on an overtime win at home against Clemson really as far as quality wins. I wouldn't be surprised if Notre Dame finishes the year out of the top 25.

To be fair, they won that Clemson game without Jameis. I guess that has to be taken into consideration. That's one of the best defenses in the nation. It wasn't pretty but that's a quality win for sure.

And yes, I agree 2014 FSU is not near as good as 2013 FSU. They haven't been overly impressive so far. But I'll let the season play out...a win over Miami and a win in the ACCCG would definitely help their "quality wins"

Also, if we're talking "eye ball" test...am I the only one that isn't particularly impressed with Bama? They've been good, don't get me wrong. But it's not like they've been dominant or anything. Of course, a win today changes that. But I think they are appropriately out of the playoffs right now.

Winning @LSU was impressive regardless of what it took as that is a tough place to play and I think LSU is pretty darn good, with nice wins over Wisconsin and Ole Miss and close losses to Bama and Miss St.

Plus the total dismantling of Texas A&M was impressive. That is what I haven't seen from FSU this year, just totally destroying a respectable team. FSU needs to do that to Miami today, looking to see how they respond after getting dropped in the rankings and a chance to make a statement.

Destrpying a team and running up the score doesnt matter. Whats amazing with fsu, is that in pressure sotuations they can just turn it on and do everything they need to win. Watching the tide turn in the games they started poorly in was insane. They were scoring on like 4 staright possessions with 3 play drives in 2nd halfs.

I camt comprehend how oregon actually losing is still more impresive than not losing. A 50 point win and 5 point win are the same to me unless both teams have the same wins.

Personally, I'd say beating Clemson without your starting, Heisman QB is just as impressive as winning on the road against LSU.

And

Quote :
"Winning @LSU was impressive regardless of what it took"

So winning against ND and Clemson and Louisville regardless of what it took...isn't impressive?

I don't have much problem with the rankings as they stand. Plus, Alabama is gonna have their chance with games against Miss St and Auburn (and potentially the SECCG) to make their move into the top 4. And FSU still has tough games against Miami and the Coastal winner (either GT or Duke...both of which will be ranked). BC is solid too...of course beating BC doesn't sound near as good as beating Texas A&M. Even though, IMO, neither team is significantly better than the other. Bama did dismantle a pretty average Texas A&M team...that's nice but not really all that impressive.

And as unimpressive as some of FSU's wins have looked...they've only had 3 games decided by one possession. OK St (who scored a TD with like 1 or 2 mins left to pull within one possession), Clemson, which FSU won without Jameis, and pretty good Notre Dame team.

Not sure what you are getting at but yeah winning at LSU is a lot different then getting by ND at home if I have to rank teams and am looking at body of work. Same with beating Lou. LSU beats Lou. by 20 neutral site.

I do look at how teams win. It's good to see a team figure a way to win, shows character. Doing that every week and it is a negative. Just how I see it, you can disagree but just expressing how I see FSU and what they have done this year. Just not impressed with what I've seen overall compared to the other top 6-7 at this point. Can def. change, and I want to see if they come out today and prove something against a decent Miami team.

I feel like you might be overrating LSU somewhat.

But overall I do agree with what you're saying. FSU has been far less dominating than they were last year and they still need to prove themselves. That said, you can't keep an undefeated FSU (and defending champ) out of the playoff. There's no way that happens.

Everything that Duke has done right this year, they are doing wrong today. Sacks, turnovers. They've taken care of the ball all year without being all the prolific offensively.
