It is really hard to point the finger at anybody this season. We lost a ton of talent, and only have one guard on the roster. Let's all just enjoy watching cat play.

Not having a backup PG in place was inexcusable. He had time to see that part coming. Find an undersized kid with decent handles that would have been happy to play 0-10 minutes a night of ACC ball. Cat will have no legs by the middle of ACC play and that will make the team even worse.

I have to think that we'd be diong better with Henderson... another ball handler who could back-up Cat when he needed rest/got in foul trouble. Right now we have noone else. And Rowan would be a great spurt off the bench and probably play better if he was playing more of a wing, but he's not ready for 30+ minutes a night.

Cat will get 3 fouls by the 12-minute mark of the 1st half and get his 4th early in the 2nd half. Then at the very end when UNC is up by 37 points and we go on a mini-run to cut it to 29 points, the refs will call a few fouls on UNC to make the overall foul margin look close in the box score, for all those who make 100% of their decisions based on the boxscore.

Oh I forgot about that foul trouble thing. Gott really cost us by taking cat out in the first half of the FSU game. I understand FSU went on a drought and didn't really beat us in that time frame but those are minutes cat could have been taking over the game.

If he fouls out you lose because you lose some of Cat's minutes but if you take him out you are taking away the minutes essentially fouling him out to prevent him from fouling out.

Typical "foul trouble" rule of thumb subbing only applies when you have a viable alternative to the player in foul trouble. It doesn't apply to superstars espcially if they aren't a big. Bigs will have to challenge plays at the rim which puts them in the position to get a foul every play but guards do not.

Think about the logic.

Cat picks up his 2nd foul in the 1st half.

You take him out. Why? because he's on pace to foul out with 10 minutes in the game. He would be disqualified for 10 minutes.

You take him out for 10 minutes.

but

if you leave him in, he could very well finish the game with 2 fouls and theres a good chance he wouldn't actually foul at the same pace and foul out.

Its a difficult concept to understand because of all the complex factors and if you had a tyler lewis on the bench of course you make that move, but you don't leave yourself shorthanded until you have to. You can't willingly play without a point guard unless you have a huge lead.

As I said in the game thread, I liked Cat FINALLY getting a breather for more than 30 seconds and seeing what the team could do without him. Because if he were to get into foul trouble at some point in the season, or miss a game or two with injury, we'd have to play without him. We need experience running the offense (and defense) without Cat on the floor.

This was game 4 versus Florida State, not a potential season-ending ACC tournament game. You take the guy out for a few minutes so he doesn't pick up a 3rd foul, AND because he basically averages 40 minutes per game. He could use a little rest here and there.

honestly, we did fine with cat on the bench. we went big and were able to play defense. he came back in and we played zone (i'm assuming partially to protect cat from more fouls) and they blew the game open.

Do that at practice or when the margin of the game is large. Not at critical points in conference games.
