This team is going to be really good...their primary goal is to win the ACC and ACC tourney apparently.
I'd be down with that.
even at 15-1 we will be one of the top ranked teams in the country. 9/30/2016 2:19:43 PM |

^i think he meant 15-1 in OOC play, not ACC play. or maybe you knew that. although i don't think we'll play 16 OOC games...not sure how many teams in are in that Paradise Jam, though. and we do play 18 ACC games. i mean...that's not unrealistic at all given the schedule. i'm not saying that i'd bet on it to happen (and that's assuming everybody is #clears) but it's hardly unrealistic.

F/C Ted Kapita - 6'10", 240 Freshman: Consensus Top 50 prospect Collegiate eligibility remains uncertain C Omer Yurtseven - 7'0", 245 Freshman: Consensus Top 100 prospect Collegiate eligibility remains uncertain ................................................................... North Carolina St finished last season a game below .500, which is something of a shame given how well departed superstar point guard Cat Barber was for the Wolfpack. Despite a bevy of talented players - including Barber - head coach Mark Gottfried was unable to coax a winning record out of his team, and that means there is pressure to perform this season. Especially because this Pack team is going to be even more talented than the last.
Prior to last year, NC St had been to the NCAA tourney in each of Goffried's four seasons - including a pair of Sweet 16 appearances. This program may have lost its go-to guy, but Gottfried has positioned his roster to retool on the run. The biggest reason why expectations remain high? Not only does the Pack have proven stars coming back: consensus Top 5 national prospect and new point guard Dennis Smith Jr. also comes aboard. Buckle up.
Gottfried has a veteran core returning, and it isn't Smith but the returnees which will comprise the most important part of Gottfried's team. It starts up front where the duo of BeeJay Anya and Abdul-Malik Abu return for their third season together. Abu nearly declared for the NBA Draft, but returns for his junior season looking to really put it all together. Abu took a huge step last season, posting 14 double-doubles and emerging as a dangerous interior player on a nightly basis. Boasting great hands and explosive quickness around the rim, Abu has a chance to emerge as a 15 and 10 guy this year and become an all-conference player. Anya has gotten himself into progressively better shape his first three years, and while he's never really exploded offensively, the burly center is an intimidating presence. One of the nation's best shot blockers, Anya shows flashes of brilliance but doesn't really have a consistent scoring game. Additionally, he spends too much time in foul trouble and it would really behoove the Pack if he could stay on the court more consistently. Senior Lennard Freeman is a good fit as a player who can play beside either Abu or Anya inside, but he may miss the season following a major surgery to help repair chronic injuries to his right leg. With the improvements made by rising scorer Maverick Rowan during the offseason - and reports indicating that he's grown as much as two inches - Gottfried has hinted at using Rowan in a stretch-4 type of role. While that won't bring the Pack much of Freeman's toughness inside, if Abu can play longer stretches at the 5 with Rowan beside him, State will present some truly exciting mismatch possibilities.
Speaking of redshirts, Terry Henderson returns from another season missed hoping to finish his collegiate career on a high note. The former West Virginia transfer carries a reputation as a knock-down outside shooter, and if he's able to average double figures and spread the floor it will really help NC St to be more consistent offensively. Henderson has shown that his explosiveness is back during practice, and the veteran is going to be hungry for a big season. Following the transfer of talented twins Cody and Caleb Martin, true sophomore Rowan will become a featured player on the wing. An impact newcomer last season, Rowan boasts terrific scoring potential and can hurt an opponent from anywhere on the floor. Rowan returns as the Wolfpack's most prolific deep threat, but will have to become a more efficient shooter. With greater potential as a post scorer, Rowan could emerge as a real matchup nightmare.
There will be new elements to the rotation this year, leading Gottfried to hope for better depth than last season. And no newcomer has fans more excited than Smith Jr. He boasts an explosive first step, easy leaping ability and the handle to control an offense both in transition and by operating in the halfcourt. Smith is not yet a finished product, and he can get wild and into turnover trouble on occasion. He also must prove that opponents have to respect his deep jumper. It's likely that Smith Jr will have the ball in hands from the very beginning of his career, though, and his extraordinary natural skill level means that Gottfried will be content to let his freshman learn on the job. Torin Dorn is now eligible after transferring from Charlotte, and now has three years to play for Gottfried. Dorn will battle Henderson for minutes, and seems to have become a better shooter during the year he spent becoming eligible per NCAA rules. Shaun Kirk, like Dorn, isn't a newcomer per se, yet the lanky forward played just 57 minutes a year ago and will be looking for a bigger chunk of playing time as a sophomore.
Incoming freshman Ted Kapita isn't quite the mega-prospect that Smith Jr is, but the 6'10 big man is a consensus Top 50 recruit in his own right. An imposing prospect out of the Congo, Kapita could play a prominent role immediately with his size, strength and scoring ability. The thing is, he may not be eligible. There are few sure things known about Kapita's eligibility at the release of this article, but if he plays at all this season, he will be a vital part of Gottfried's rotation. Markell Johnson is another freshman guard who should carve out some meaningful time behind Smith Jr., and Johnson has been rated a Top 100 player by some services. Darius Hicks may be more of a project, but if another big man with eligibility concerns is allowed to play, State will be downright scary in the paint. Omer Faruk Yurtseven is a legitimate 7-footer with a high skill level and enough muscle to potentially play serious minutes at the 5 spot immediately. There has been significantly more conversation about Yurtseven, but the NCAA is attempting to sort out a he-said, he-said mess. The governing body's investigation into Yurtseven's amatuer status mostly stems from conflicting statements. Yurtseven says that he has never accepted money from his old club team in Uzbekistan. Thing is, his former coach has reported in no uncertain terms that Yurtseven has, indeed, been compensated. If either Kapita or Yurtseven cannot play, Hicks will surely see a larger role. It's not to say that the eligibility of Yurtseven and Kapita will make or break the Pack's season, but their potential presences would mean a massive talent upgrade for State. On some levels, Kapita and Yurtseven are something of an analog for the Pack's potential this season - things could go either way.
Last season was surely a disappointment for the Wolfpack given the team's talent level. The ACC is an unforgiving league, though, and it remains a gauntlet this year. If Smith Jr is able to make the offense hum and the Wolfpack can stay healthy and consistent, this team should make the NCAA Tournament. On paper, they look like a Sweet 16 contender. This is also a program which must re-prove itself on some levels, though, and with many newcomers it may take a few weeks for the Pack to run as one. And, for all of Gottfried's recruiting successes, there has rarely been on-court consistency for his teams. It's hard to bet against this loaded roster, though, and Gottfriend's NC St teams have usually done some of their best work in March. The Pack could spend significant stretches of this season in the Top 25 if all goes according to plan." |
seems like a pretty fair assessment. has us at #34 not assuming Kapita and Yurt are eligible. this guy does a top 50 every year that's pretty spot on except Yurt is more than a top 100 and Anya is fat as fuck.
