I'm not sure who you're talking to. I assume me since you quoted what I said. Either way you phrase it all three of your statements are incorrect. You most certainly can tether the iPhone in the US without jailbreaking. That's all I was trying to say all along. I don't see how this Azaka 'tard has a leg to stand on. His statement was wrong. I said as much. Should be the end of the story. He even admits that when he made his original statement he wasn't thinking about changing carrier profiles as an option. I just wanted him (and anyone else reading the thread) to know it was an option. And for some people that are too scared to jailbreak, going to a website, and clicking on USA and AT&T isn't as scary. I personally know 2 people that I've talked through setting up tethering and both wouldn't even think of jailbreaking.
Quote : | "You know exactly what I was saying and you started this stupid argument in the first place." |
I didn't start the argument on purpose, I genuinely wanted to point out that you can tether without jailbreaking. They are two very different processes. You keep talking about how you can't tether without "doing something to it" but the simple fact is that you can't check your email without "doing something to it" either, and as far as "1337 haxx0ring" goes, changing your carrier settings is far closer to adding an email account to mail.app than it is fully jailbreaking your phone.
[Edited on May 25, 2010 at 1:48 AM. Reason : Actually, it's way easier to change carrier profiles than it is to add a mail account.]
[Edited on May 25, 2010 at 1:54 AM. Reason : Then again, jailbreaking is also less work than adding a mail account, but I digress.]5/25/2010 1:43:26 AM |

To my knowledge this no longer works since 3.1 or 3.1.2. Unless there is a new method i am unaware of.5/25/2010 1:53:44 AM |

i believe golovko is correct in that you can't do it anymore on the new firmwares. i tried before a jailbreak was out for whatever version i'm at now and it wouldn't work. 5/25/2010 8:22:07 PM |

fuck no son
just jailbreak and be done with it. it takes like 5 seconds now.
actually i think you can go back if you don't have a 3gs.. last time i checked though there was a baseband update with 3.1.3 that couldn't be reversed on 3gs's. i know there was a way to not upgrade the baseband when you upgraded to 3.1.3.. in that case you COULD go back to 3.1.2... but yea, most people didn't know to do that

I do have a 3G, not a 3GS. Would a simple restore put me back to early update?

nah.. hold on let me do some reading on it though
and jailbreaking literally is plugging the phone in and clicking one button now. super super easy
but i have to ask, what are you trying to accomplish??
edit: to jailbreak just go to this link: http://chronic-dev.org/blog/2010/05/boom/ and download for windows or whatever you're on. plug in iphone, hit "jailbreak" button that shows up after opening that program you just downloaded and 5 seconds later it's done

Downgrading so I can tether to laptop without jailbreaking. 5/27/2010 11:40:08 AM |
ScHpEnXeL Suspended 32613 Posts user info edit post |
yeah it's really not worth doing from what i've read.. you're far more likely to brick your phone from trying to roll back the baseband update than by jailbreaking. a lot of people are getting them downgraded but then don't have any service..
maybe there's an easier way of doing it than what i found though that someone else can help you with 5/27/2010 11:49:45 AM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah don't bother with downgrading. Just jailbreak. You don't even have to use any jailbreak features and just use the tethering if you want. 5/27/2010 1:25:38 PM |

that's what i was thinking.. i'm not sure why most people think jailbreaking is some kind of crazy hacked homebrew firmware that apple is going to destroy your phone if they know you have it kind of thing
jailbreaking pretty much just installs one program and unrestricts a few things..it's not that big of a deal in and of itself 5/27/2010 1:38:15 PM |

I liked the built in tethering when I was originally jailbroken many months ago. I never bothered to set it up again when I had to restore a few weeks back. Is that not an option anymore? 5/27/2010 4:18:37 PM |

Yes there are programs in cydia that will enable "natural" tethering if you're still at 3.1.2. From a quick google search, it looks like none of those work on 3.1.3. If you've upgraded it looks like a program like MyWi is gonna be the only way. 5/28/2010 6:50:54 AM |

My mom's iPhone battery drains from like 100% to 0% within hours and she took it to the iPhone stores and they told her she had to do a complete restore to the new software then redo all her settings etc. Anyone experienced this on a non-jailbroken 3GS? It's going to be a pain to restore everything, because they specifically told her not to restore from a backup because it'll restore whatever software bug is causing the battery to drain. 6/1/2010 8:00:21 PM |

What I'd recommend doing is a back-up but don't restore from it. This way if it doesn't fix the issue she still has it.
But back up the photos separately for sure. 6/1/2010 8:05:14 PM |

The new plans Giz and Endgadget are reporting are really lame. 2gig cap is the best AT&T can do now? And they still haven't made the promised network upgrades (or expansion, there's no reason to have Edge signal along interstates).
Not even halfway through my billing cycle and I'm up to 1.3 gigs already, mainly because I don't leave the wifi searcher on. 6/2/2010 7:02:44 AM |

I dont mind the plan, since it will move my 3g iPhone plan down to 15 per month instead of 30 ...
I think I used almost 1.5 Gigs total in the past year on the iPhone 3GS.
As I posted in the iPad thread though ... I wish there was a $5/month 3G plan for those that dont use the 3G very much, but rather just want it as a backup when there is no WIFI around. Wifi at home and work, and free wifi at many other places ... just no need for me, since I don't travel. 6/2/2010 8:29:06 AM |
