Can't figure out if I've fucked up my camera or if I just suck worse than I used to, but my images are getting frustratingly soft. Is this the excuse I need to upgrade from my XTi?

Almost forgot, I took some people pictures back at the turn of the year!

so I need to get a headshot taken for work, and my coworkers suggested several studios around charlotte, but I think I'm going to try to just set up the backdrop, lighting, and tripod and try to do it myself at home. Yep, it is also the old bridge that connected the keys.

On one bridge there's a tiny island with about four homes on it and the only access to it is via a 3 mile bridge walk/gold cart ride, or boat. It's bad ass.

i'm sure the question/advice has been asked in this thread before, but i'm asking again because i really respect y'all's opinions, and you may know new photographers that haven't been mentioned in other threads...also, i don't feel like sorting through 150 pages to find the info

wedding is coming up in september and we're looking at photographers...i really like nick at blue bend (http://bluebendphotography.com/)...his site isn't great, but i like his work and the guy is downright personable...also, he's willing to give me all of the RAW files (he actually seemed excited that someone cared enough to ask, hah)

the others that my fiancée and i are looking at, but haven't had a chance to delve into very deeply are listed below...i'd really appreciate any feedback regarding these guys: if you know any of them personally, or think their work is awful or it's better IRL than on the site (these flash sites make me want to stab someone)...if you have any other suggestions of photographers or anything else, i'd really appreciate the advice!

I can vouch for Martha Manning. She is really nice and very talented. Her prices were very reasonable (a year and a half ago, at least), and she gave me a CD with all the raw files.
Good story:
I had already paid my deposit (non refundable) for her to photograph our October wedding, well, by June we decided to elope instead (best decision I ever made). I wanted some documentation of our courthouse wedding, so I called her up 3 days before we were planning to go to the courthouse and she rearranged her plans to come photograph our "wedding". She followed us through the whole process and then we went to a park after wards and took "formal" pictures. I have a bunch of great photos of the whole thing and I loved being able to have something to show friends and family. I thought the situation would be challenging, but she did a great job, the pictures were awesome. PM if you want to see the results.

QUESTION:

I currently have a Nikon D3000 with a Nikon Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR, and I'm getting my W-2 tax returns back in about a week, so I'm thinking about getting a new lens. I'm not too sure if I want to get more of a zoom lens, such as a 55-200mm (possibly Sigma or Nikon), or a straight f/1.8 50mm lens. If any of you have a DSLR/are experienced with lenses, which lens would your recommend for me to purchase?

-Note that my D3000 is part of the newer generation of Nikon cameras, so lenses do not come cheap... in order to get a lens that can AF with my camera, I'm looking at a $300-$400 lens just for a small upgrade to what I have.

uhhh...what? i assume you're referencing the fact that you got a cheaper body that doesn't have AF and that AF lenses cost more? lenses can be cheap if you want them to be cheap...if you choose to buy expensive lenses, then so be it

^^^ I'd go for the 50mm myself. Not only is it a sharp/fast lens but it'll teach you more about making pics since you'll have to shoot in manual mode.

That's assuming you get an old non cpu lens. There's alot of them out there and there usually less than 200$.

If you're fine with refurb nikon lenses you can get the 55-200VR (refurb) and 35mm 1.8 DX (new) together for $350 shipped from adorama. I just got a refurb 55-200 and I'm happy with it. It looks and works like new. The 35mm 1.8 is a must have for D40/D60/D3000/D5000 IMO.

You could get the 50mm 1.8 for 120. Keep in mind that the 50mm 1.8 will not autofocus with the d3000 so I'd recommend the 35mm.

np... I've had the 18-105 vr. It's pretty large for the smaller nikon cameras. I used it for about 2 weeks and sold it because it just didn't really offer enough zoom for the cost/size.

Makes some of the cons of the D3000 body worth it.

I had a $500 budget when I first bought my camera (so I only got the body & 18-55mm/3.5-5.5f lens for $450), but since I got my taxes back, I have an additional $300 to sped on lenses. It's looking like I'm gonna get the zoom lens that zoom lens & 50mm standard.

Remember a 50mm on a smaller sensor body isn't a normal lens, it is equivalent to a 75mm on a full-frame camera. If you want a normal lens you need to get the 35mm. For a little over $300 you can actually get the 50mm 1.8 D (won't auto focus but still is amazing) and the 35mm 1.8G.

Unless you are worried about every last pixel the 55-200 is a great lens and I would recommend it. When I went to Yellowstone it is the lens I used the most and sure beat carrying around all sorts of extra weight, also it is cheap enough that if it gets broken/stolen it isn't a huge deal.

I'm thinking about selling my 50mm 1.8d and the 55-200vr. PM me with an offer for one or both. I ran into a great deal on a 35 1.8g and couldn't pass it up after I already got the 50 and the 55-200 just isn't the right lens for me. I've taken like 10 pictures with the 50 and maybe 40 with the 55-200.
