I used Photomatrix Pro 3 to merge the images & tone map them, then I used Adobe Lightroom for the finishing touches

...favorite it if you have a Flickr; that would be sick. I hate the over the top HDRs, because the more editing that people put into them, the less they look like actual photos.

I may likely sell my Canon EOS/350D aka Rebel XT before too long. Haven't really used it lately, and I have access to another SLR from my dad whenever I would need to use one.

I am keeping my nicer lenses. However it would have the kit lens, 3 batteries, a second charger that works in the car or house, and several CF cards. Box, manual, and everything it came with.

How much should I be able to get out of it? Looking on ebay I say close to $300.

You can pick up to 100 different shots of your own and transform them into cards or mini cards and they are pretty cheap.

you can also use the mini cards for cool projects for the holidays.

You could've made a sick HDR if you took more pictures like the first 2. The clouds would look sick and the water would blend together.

i like the first one best. nice shot.
i, personally, would have used a polarizing filter or ND filter to allow for an even longer shutter speed and to keep the sky from being so blown out. it's hard to keep that blue and white in check without a filter when you are dragging the shutter like that.

sure. and i wasn't knocking your picture in any way, it's a great shot! just giving some constructive criticism.

a polarizing filter basically filters out polarized light (duh!). when used it makes blues bluer (skies) and reduces glare on water - two things that would add some more awesome to your photo. they are like the lenses are polarized sunglasses if you've ever worn them. they are like ND (neutral density filters) in that they darken your camera's view and allow for longer shutter speeds in brighter light. here's one reference... just a review of a particular polarizer.

a ND filter allows you to darken a portion (or all) of your photo to better blend areas such as sky and land. it's hard for me to explain so i'll give a link for that too. you could basically darken the sky by a couple stops and expose the water/land for a longer period of time without overexposing the sky. there are many different types of ND filters, usually differentiated by f-stop reduction.

It looks like a polarizing filter would definitely be beneficial. We enjoy taking shots outdoors but often run into the problem of the sky washing out, especially at the beach.

What size would work for a D40? Currently we just have the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses.

Also, I looked on best buy and their filters were like 30 bucks, whereas the nikon brands on wolfcamera were upwards of 100-200 bucks... is the difference just based on quality?

the size filter depends on the size lens you are using. there are square filters with adapters that fit different sized lenses as well. read up on Cokin filters. i don't know about the Nikon lenses because i'm not familiar with them.

what i've read/heard about lens filters is that you really get what you pay for. it doesn't matter so much with UV filters, but like lenses, quality is pretty indicative by price. not always, but most of the time.

i bought a used B&W polarizer. it cost a bit more, but it's a really nice filter.

^I just checked, and the Nikon lens uses 52mm filter adapters.

I really like Tiffen filters. You'd be using a 52mm filter, assuming that we have the same Nikon lens (most likely).

I don't think it is a particularly stellar photo. However, I enjoy minimalist photography, and I thought the different types of lines/colors/textures/values were interesting. Given the limitations of a cell phone camera, I feel like this kind of "composition first" mentality keeps it interesting. It doesn't follow the rule of thirds, but that was intentional. What I like about it is the fact that something with absolutely nothing going on (it is just a hallway and a window) has so much going on. There are so many lines, and the challenge with this shot was keeping it symmetrical. Do you think it would have been more or less interesting if I would have shot it at an angle and ignored the symmetry, or not paid attention to the position of the blue tiles in relation to each other and the edges of the frame, or not gotten it as close to perfectly level as I could with a touchscreen phone? Or do you think there wasn't really any value in the photograph to begin with, and that it was destined to just be a shot of a window in a hallway regardless of how I approached it?

many of ronny's are great, i love his eye for color and geometry, but sometimes they just don't do anything for me. often, if a picture doesn't strike you and there's no discernible technicality to it, it might just be garbage as far as you're concerned. then again reading meaning into something devoid of it is the prerogative of any art enthusiast
