BigEgo, call me crazy but I think the young Chris Mooney the head coach of Richmond spiders might be worth a look as a potential up and comer.

Of course he would be one of those candidates to look at if we can't draw a home run hire.

I can't believe no one is railing Lowe for his biggest mistake yesterday which was playing Horner so many minutes.

We simply aren't a good enough team to overcome him being on the floor for 30 minutes against a good team.

He's an average offensive player. He has good %'s but his volume is low. Every fucking time we get ball movement and start breaking down the defense he catches a pass and just stands there for 3 seconds while the defense recovers. Every fucking time, drives me insane. He just doesn't have the court awareness to play in an ACC offense.

He's a horrible defender. Tracy Smith is undersized already and we need Howell out there to protect the rim to make up for it. Horner IS a good rebounder but he was just getting destroyed out there all game long on defense. He's incapable of rotating, shot blocking, guarding his man, etc.

We will be a better team when he leaves next year and Howell replaces his minutes.

We simply are not a good enough team to overcome his overall negative impact on each ACC game.

They absolutely killed us with easy buckets all game long because he can't handle post defense. I can't be the only one who notices this stuff.

Sure, he's fine against our non conference opponents. Hell, he'd probably make 2nd team all conference in the Big South. But in the ACC he is chopped liver and has consistently been one of the worst players in the conference for the past two seasons.

Howell is a slight negative on offense but at least he would help us on the glass and by possibly creating better matchups for Tracy. We'd more than makeup for any offense we lose with the huge tradeoff we'd get on defense.

Horner's stats from the other thread:

Quote :
"FG % - .527 (2nd on team)
3pt % - .447 (1st on team)
Reb avg - 4.9 (2nd on team)
Score avg - 13.4 (2nd on team)
1st in blocks and 2nd in steals "

Howell can not put up those numbers. As sad as it is, we would be much worse w/o Horner on the floor. Howell will eventually be a better player than Horner (he better be), but right now, he's not.

Howell will eventually be a better defender than Horner, but right now the biggest difference would be that Howell would get more rebounds. You give Howell 30 minutes a game he'll get you 8 or 9 rebounds a game, at least.

Not a good move for us. We don't need to get back to something Princeton similar, and I think that's what he's doing at Richmond since he is from Princeton.

and he would improve faster by playing more minutes. Should have done this during the cup cake games though.

Was he hurt for a while at the beginning of the season?

^^Nope he was perfectly fine Lowe just hates NCSU so he played painter. That is why you saw him participating in warmups...
Horner was a big reason we were even in the game he even stopped Landesburg when he was matched up against him. When I saw that I had to replay on the DVR to make sure the announcers didn't have Wood and Horner confused.

You guys are absolutely nuts. Horner was horrible yesterday. Mindblowingly bad.

There was one play where he left his man to try to block UVA's big man on a layup attempt. His effort didn't even affect the shot in the slightest. The guy happened to miss and Horner's man got an easy putback dunk. It's like dude you can't give up open dunks on putbacks if you arent good enough to affect the shots you attempt to block

There is no way to quantify how many points he allowed yesterday. He leads the nation in catching the ball after it goes thru the basket and thats a pretty damn good way to judge who is giving up a shit ton of points

That run he had started around the time Howell did whatever stupid thing it was that got him out of the game. I remember Howell guarding Landesberg about 25-30 feet from the basket, then like the after the next possession he goes out and Horner comes in. Horner was guarding Landesberg for the rest of the game. He was doing an okay job at getting position to force a tough shot, but Landesberg was making those shots on offense, and stopping Horner on defense.

Maybe by that point I had really stopped paying attention once it was clear it was a lost cause. I do remember Horner playing pretty good D on Landesburg and being very surprised and I remember Landesburg scoring over wood a couple of times in a row. To be fair Horner made some bad decisions to end the game offensively but I don't think Howell was a much better option at that point.

You have single-handedly managed to thoroughly defeat me in debate and show me how coach Lowe is actually a very good coach despite his overwhelming lack of success. I commend you in every way.

I think the only one saying horner should play is FatTony. Everyone else has actually watched a basketball game before.

As some guy pointed out on PP, coach K had no problem benching the senior greg paulus because he sucked. It's time for Lowe to make a big boy decision and bench his only senior.

Horner should come off the bench and chuck up a couple of 3s every now and then

Williams should be coming off the bench as well and be told to score score score, he is fells 2.0 right now

Horner is going to have no confidence after FSU, they are long and athletic. Anyone wanna guess the over/under on how many times horner gets blocked?

^^^^ you would never run the play for howell. howell and vandy mean you change the offense (imagine that -- adjust your play for the players on the court). you try to get wood, mays, cj, or javi the shot.

You don't need to really run plays for howell or vandy unless they have a huge matchup advantage. We actually did this yesterday. Howell and vandy both successfully posted up much smaller guys. The one time horner posted up against a smaller guy, he failed horribly.

You just tell howell and vandy to hustle, box out, grab the ball, rotate as they practiced. That's what we need. Everyone plays a different role. They are not interchangeable parts in some gay ass positionless offense.

I don't think howell has the conditioning yet to log any more minutes than he already does and he is pretty terrible on defense. I think Horner still gets minutes because we don't really have much better options as scary as that sounds. That being said I would love Howell to prove me wrong. Oh and FSU is getting beat by maryland right now!

Howell and Vandenburg need to play over Horner. We obviously are not going anywhere this year so the future needs to be built. Horner has had plenty of chances to not suck against good teams. Howell could be a good player for us. He at least has the size and strength to bang and rebound with Tracy.

^^ I think it would be great to get howell more minutes but I don't really see Vandenburg playing anything but center. Maybe put Davis in at PF occasionally with instructions to do nothing but rebound. We would be much faster and could still rebound well (for all his faults Davis fights for rebounds)

I said it right after the game in the game thread. Horner gets his stats padded because he plays so dang much, touches the ball so dang much, and played pretty well against people 2 feet smaller than him, and because somehow Lowe thinks it's a good idea for him to be our second offensive option after Tracy, which, ever since we've entered ACC play, has been a terrible failure.

Start Howell.

In no way am I saying Horner is good or has ACC level abilities.

But you can't seriously think that taking our 2nd leading scorer, best outside shooter, and leading shot blocker and putting him on the bench in favor of a freshman that's still probably not 100% will help us win games.

Howell will end up being a much better player than Horner. But right now, as sad as it is to say, Horner is our 2nd best player.

The problem with that is Tracy Smith has no Jumper. He's completely not a threat to score if he's more than 5 feet from the basket. Are you suggesting we put him at the 4 then have a guy whose biggest advantage is his size and we need to have posting up at the 5 as well? For the Offense to run well we need at least one big that can hit a 15 footer on the floor.

PF generally have a little bit of an outside game/ dribble drive Smith has neither and can't defend people who have either. He is an undersized center. That is why when both Smith and Mccauley played last year Mccauley spent more time on the perimeter.

^^I agree he needs experience but he looks like a 'tard out there, especially early in the game. I mean if you're just saying he needs to play b/c you're giving up on the season after 2 games, fine, but he's not good for anything but rebounding right now. He takes stupid shots on offense, he doesn't play defense and even gives up on plays, and he turns the ball over.

If he'd just get in the game and do what he's good at, which is taking up space and rebounding, he could play 30 minutes for all I care, but he tries to do too much so he should sit until he decides he's going to play within himself.
