Why Are General Education Courses Required in College?
General education courses in higher education are fundamental to a well-rounded college and university education. Courses across disciplines allow students to gain interdisciplinary understanding, attain a broad range of skills and make active and positive contributions to society and in their careers.

So let me get this straight.... That person is saying that CHASS majors will be using the mechanics in everyday life... Are they trying to say they won't be using something they learned in a CHASS course in everyday life?
lolk.
I do like to dress up!

Quote : | "Who does this Skwinkle think she/he is? Oh, an English major. She knows a little of everything, but a master of nothing. I love how CHASS majors think that people should take History/Philosophy/Literature/ect classes. I know those topics can come up in conversation, which I suppose that's why they feel they're justified in thinking their classes are useful to engineers. What I don't understand is why don't their departments make them take Engineering classes? The Nuke department could use some more people to add to the 20 people who take their entry level engineering class. We can always add some more seats in our Statics and Dynamics classes in the MAE and CE departments. Is this information useless to an English major? I don't see how so, as the basic concepts are found in many of our mechanical systems, which they will inevitably encounter in their everyday life.
But no. The CHASS majors who started out in Engineer or some other science change because they either didn't "like" the material or they couldn't "do" the material. So why is it that when engineers or people outside of CHASS who don't want to take their classes because they aren't interested in the areas we're forced to take classes called "snobs," or they somehow think we don't "get" why we should take their classes. It's a double standard to be honest. But I personally feel that if a CHASS student doesn't want to take an engineering class, they shouldn't be forced to to do it. So why do you scoff at someone who doesn't want to take a CHASS class if they're in engineering. What makes your classes any more valuable over our own? Again. It's a double standard. " |

I think I am someone who ended up a CHASS major despite considering an engineering profession because I wanted to. I see the value in both and think it would indeed serve CHASS majors to take engineering classes. And sure, I'll be the first to admit many CHASS majors are the "I just went to college because daddy was paying for me to party for 4 (or 5 or 6) years" type. But not all.
And I thoroughly miss the analytical side of things and am considering my options for moving my career back in that direction. But all in all I support a well-rounded approach to education, where everyone studies a little bit of everything. I'm not saying I'm better than anyone. But don't think you're better than me either. 12/9/2010 10:44:17 PM |

Quote : | "I think PackPrincess missed my point. It hurt me, you know. She thinks I'm ignorant of the reasoning. I'm well aware of the reasoning. My point is their reasoning is BS, as it's only applied unidirectional. CHASS majors don't have to take Engineering courses, so why do I have to take CHASS courses? If they're trying to develop a well rounded person, a duty that isn't of their concern, then are they saying a CHASS student wouldn't be anymore well-rounded by forcing them to into Engineering courses?
Samwise16 hurts me too. I mean, I understand her view. But it seems she missed what I said. CHASS majors don't have to take Engineering courses. Yet I have to take their classes. I didn't say I agreed with their logic of saying that we would benefit by them forcing us to take CHASS classes. I simply stated their logic, went off the assumption that it is true. If their logic is indeed true, then logically, CHASS majors should have to take Engineering classes. I thought my own personal feelings were known. I don't think CHASS majors should be forced to take engineering classes and I don't think engineering majors should be forced to take CHASS classes. The option to take them should be there, but it shouldn't be forced upon anyone. Maybe people go to college to continue HS, which to be honest, I feel a lot of CHASS majors choose CHASS to do just that. But I went to college to specialize in a field that interested me. If I wanted to know more about history, I would take a history class or major in it. " |

you take general education courses to learn how to think laterally. i swear to dad, some of the engineers who post on this board have convinced themselves that all of the worlds problems can be solved with a top-down method of problem solving, and they completely lack the ability to think critically. they view the world through a prism of absolutes, where a nuanced and adaptive solution to the various problems of the world do not exist. this guy sounds like a very boring person who will be happy to plug-in numbers without ever having to confront the complexities of real-world problems, and will lack the diverse range of skill sets required to be an innovative professional. 12/9/2010 10:46:31 PM |

You may not have to take engineering, but you have to take CALS courses too yes?
I mean I could argue that everyone should have to take courses from the CNR (College of Natural Resources) too.
I mean any college could be inserted here

I was in CALS, and I not only had to take a CHASS class, but technically an engineering class as well. I placed into engineering math. So, I got your point, I just think it's pointless.
And I'm pretty sure out of the list of CHASS classes you are offered, most of them are lower level. Am I wrong in thinking you have to build up to the hard engineering classes?
And hahaha I got a creepy PM. 12/9/2010 10:50:50 PM |

if abet has different standards for engineering majors than the equivalent accreditation boards have for other colleges, that's an issue to take up with the accreditation boards instead of nc state
nc state is going to do only what it has to in order to stay accredited, whether you think it's fair/useful/correctly applied or not

Quote : | "I must confess, Skwinkle, I understand what you're saying. But to be quite honest, the English major provides a curriculum for those who want a general knowledge. But making each major the same as the English major is just a waste of resources. If people want to continue the general education offered by High School, the university offers a major/department for that. But some of us are actually interested in specialization. Those 7 classes can be used to expand the curriculums in the COE departments to offer more useful information inside the career path the wish to take.
JesusHChrist, I'm sorry, but you can't force someone to think in the same manner that you want them to. You can't teach creativity, I'm sorry. You either are, or you aren't. Some of the CHASS classes might assist the people in engineering who are creative to hone their ability. But again, you can't force someone to be creative. That's just foolish. And to be honest, creative people are typically drawn to CHASS.
LOL@Samwise. I'm sorry, but Engineering Math isn't an engineering course. MA 141 teaches the same material as MA 131, except with the addition of Maplesoft problems. The tests may also be a bit harder, but the material is the same. And I'm not really talking about the hard engineering classes. I'm talking about Statics. You need basic arithmetic and geometry. I could teach a 10th grader the material. Yet many people struggle with the concepts and problem solving abilities needed to solve for an unknown force. Granted, the class is often a "weed out" course. But as far as engineering goes, it's the basic of the basics. " |

Yes, yes you can. Creativity isn't some spontaneous dose of inspiration, it's the product of experimentation and endless refinement. Go walk around Brooks Hall or Leazar. If you couldn't teach creativity, you would see zero growth in the abilities of the students who come out of there. I'm sure the same could be said for the maturation of many CHASS students. But, whatever. Continue plugging numbers away and taking zero initiative to do something new.
But whatever, I already know your response. "Those people were creative to begin with." I promise you, if you would commit yourself, you would surprise yourself with what you could accomplish. You won't though, you'll just keep reading your comic books and complaining about the inferiority of those who aren't engineers.
