Quote : | "Samwise hurt my feelings. I mean it in the most sincere manner. I mean, I corrected her and told her she didn't take an Engineering class. To sit here and say that we act like dicks and that we're "high and mighty" because we don't want to take their fucking class is just rude and hypocritical. I know many CHASS majors who don't want to take engineering classes (and I mean ACTUAL engineering courses, not a math class that happens to have a lot of engineers in it), so why are these CHASS majors not dicks and high and mighty? Again. It's a double standard. An Engineer doesn't want to take CHASS classes, and everyone from the fucking department goes RAWRRRRR IT WILL HELP YOU YOU NEED IT TO BE WELL-ROUNDED PERSON. If being a well rounded person means that taking humanities, then why don't people who take nothing but humanities have to take Engineering courses? Does that not make them well rounded? The argument can be made from both sides and be correct, yet people only agree when it's made from one side (engineers should take humanities), but they scoff at taking engineering courses. Why is that? I wish someone could answer me.
Is it because people in CHASS are forced to take other CHASS classes outside of their major (like PS majors may have to take ENG classes)? I found that there are quite a few similarities in the different majors of CHASS. You can be a PS major, yet still learn many of the same things a History major or ENG major may learn, even in different classes. And if you want to stand by the argument that taking humanities makes engineers well-rounded, then you should look at it as this. Engineers leave with the knowledge of their engineering discipline and the "general knowledge" bestowed upon them by CHASS, while majors in CHASS leave with just the "general knowledge," (granted, there may be a concentration, or major, on the area where they study). Where's the Engineering knowledge? " |

".....no?" "i woke up at 4am and you were fucking my thighs... it creeped me out that i couldn't wake you... pushed you, shook you, but you just kept humping the air with your eyes closed and mouth open drooling. then thought i shouldn't wake you, because i thought of the scene in step brothers... so i got up and put on shorts." this really bothered me more than it should.

Hey guess what.... I NEVER HAD A CHASS MAJOR. So how is that hypocritical?! I never saw anyone in CHASS taking Quantitative Chemistry or Anatomy and Physiology but I still realize the value in taking classes outside the box. And I'd be willing to bet they never saw any zoology majors in their higher up philosophy classes, either12/10/2010 9:42:10 AM |

This engineer complaining about CHASS majors is sounding like a whiny little bitch. No point in arguing because everyone else has already made the correct points. However, I will anyway and this is how I see it:
Engineers/science/tech majors have to take basic CHASS and other classes (a Com class or two, an english class or two, a history class or two, and sociology class or two). Basic stuff...not difficult. You don't have to be a great wirter/public speaker/philosopher/history buff to make an A in any of those classes.
Now CHASS majors and/or Business majors also have to take those basics and others. Several maths and sciences that really have absolutely nothing to do with their major and career field. I was a business major and am a law school graduate, and I NEVER used anything that I got from my math and science classes. Any math and science I use in my ever day life or career I learned in high school.
Even though it doesn't matter, I would guess that Engineers get more use out of those basic classes that they bitch about than CHASS and business majors use out of the basics that they have to take that don't relate to their major. And I know this person has already whined about those basic math classes not being "engineering classes"...but the bottom line is that engineering is a math/tech major. Math has nothing to do with CHASS. So however trivial those basic math classes are to you, they can still be difficult to someone who doesn't do well in Math but does extremely well in CHASS type classes...just like you do very well in Engineering and obviously struggle with CHASS-type classes.
Bottom line...stfu. 12/10/2010 9:52:00 AM |

Quote : | "And Arab13. He's a fucking tool if he thinks a university education consists of useless material that is extraneous to what you want to study. I understand if he wants to get 5 degrees. More power to him. But he made that choice. I have no interest in taking a semester of history in college. Not to put down the people who want to, but I shouldn't be forced to do it. It's asinine. But I know NCSU just makes us do it to justify keeping the CHASS department." |
obviously you don't understand the definition of a university education, highlighting the need, that you obviously display, to take courses that actually round out your education rather than merely further narrowing it. you don't want to end up like the chinese who can't think their way out of a paper sack.
If I recall correctly, I was in engineering before I realized that I didn't want to do anything in that field of study, you had to take about 24-30 credits of CHASS classes or something related, English, History, Philosophy, and Psychology (or something related to all of those areas) The purpose of taking these classes is to give you a better prospective in problem solving.12/10/2010 1:19:47 PM |

As an English major, I agree that most CHASS classes are silly. I wish curriculum was better aligned with real-world value, like generating marketing revenue. I believe that most CHASS classes are smidge outdated and irrelevant for people who need to be prepared for the working world.
You can teach creativity. Creativity is pointless if it's not harnessed. And creativity has value. ROI of creativity: http://www.pointtopoint.com/2010/03/the-measurable-roi-of-creativity/ 12/10/2010 1:32:28 PM |

Look, I'm at a point in my career now where I get to hire new people sometimes, and do you know why I want people from a major university like State? Because not only can they do their job well, but they can also talk to me about shit that matters, are more likely to be well rounded, productive members of society.
If you don't like the cirriculum, don't go to the school. You said you couldn't go to a tech school because of the reputation...why the fuck do you think people like to hire big college grads? They are well educated and motivated.
Like you know shit, whoever you are that is spewing ignorance through the double anonymity of the confession thread on an internet message board.

Quote : | "Samwise still doesn't seem to get it. It's quite disappointing. I really don't give a rats ass about her degree or major. If she wants to read Shakespeare and be graded for it, great. I, personally, don't fucking care. I'm not trying to say all CHASS classes are uninteresting though. I've enjoyed Ethics, from their philosophy department. But I don't want to take any of their literature classes, yet I'm forced to. I enjoy History, but I couldn't find time to take the class because I had to fulfill other humanity requirements instead. And if someone wants to just do straight ME, because they want to go into research (which a lot of people want to do), why should they be forced into take CHASS classes?
jbrick83 also doesn't seem to know how to read. Not surprising given his business degree. My point wasn't that the classes are difficult. It's easy as shit to find easy classes in CHASS just to fulfill the requirement. But if all I'm doing is just taking a class for a semester that I have no interest in, can you really tell me it is beneficial for me to take the class? If someone is taking a class because they have to, and they have no interest in the subject, it's just a waste of times from an education standpoint. There will be nothing gotten from the class. But really, what even makes you think that we get more out of a literature class than you got out of Calculus? I took Western Lit. Tell me where the fuck I'm going to use that? I took D231, some design history class where attendance wasn't taken and the teacher fussed and whined about the damn computer 25% of the time. Outside of that, I don't remember anything I learned in the class. It was literally the easiest A- I have ever gotten. Outside of the requirement fulfillment and GPA boost, it was a waste of time. You're going to say I'm bitching and whining because I find some of these classes uninteresting, non-beneficial, and overall, a waste of time? A class taken and nothing learned is a pretty good definition of a waste of time. And I've never struggled in a CHASS class in my life. I've just found myself uninterested in the subject matter, and as such, unmotivated to do any work. I've still pulled out good grades from them.
And Arab13 obviously is very ignorant of the Chinese. I recommend that he speak of what he knows and not of what he doesn't. And it's 21 credit hours of classes. And they are not intended to necessarily help you with your problem solving. Reading Shakespeare doesn't help you with problem solving. The Science and Technology classes don't help you with solving problems (they may expose you to new things though, but I found, at least in the STS class I took, it was all stuff I was familiar with, in which my knowledge of the subject far exceeded that of the professor). These classes don't help with problem solving. If their intent is to do this, then they need to narrow the list down to classes and subjects that do just that. If the fields and classes offered actually fulfilled your belief of what they're trying trying to intend, I would agree with you, as problem solving is very important for engineers, and at least in most engineering curriculums, 85% of it consists of theory, and 15% consists of being creativity, a problem IMO.
slackerb brings the LULZ. I didn't say I couldn't go to a tech school, I said I didn't want to, mainly because they only offer associate degrees in engineering. They don't really go into any theory. They are mainly trade schools, and that isn't what I wanted. The reason why engineers from big schools from NCSU are desirable isn't because of their humanities. It's because the engineering program itself (the engineering classes and applicable knowledge) does a good job at preparing them for the job. Never in a job interview have we gone from talking about a cam driven system to Shakespeare or Ar " |
