Question for JCTarheel and StingrayRush. If you were not UNC fans, or even a biased NC State fan, how would you view the connections between Davis and the tutor/nanny, and Davis/Blake relationship. 6/22/2011 12:15:11 AM |

i would probably just take what i'm told by most writers at face value and not really bother to delve into it. believe me, i understand that on the whole, the situation looks horrible. i guess i've just been following every miniscule development for a year so everything has a different meaning to me, not just because i'm a fan, but when you really break everything down it marginalizes (to me) a lot of the improprieties
for example: improper benefits totalling 27K. a lot of that was guys crashing at friends' places, probably meals from the same friends, driving them around, etc. quinn, little, and austin were the only real bad ones, taking jewelry and shit from agents.

And you believe that your bias hasn't tainted your judgement when it comes to you marginalizing things? And perhaps one could marginalize almost every scandal that any school as endured if they looked at it hard enough through biased eyes?

it probably has, hard to extract myself from it. i would like to really look into other schools' situations though if i had more time. definitely been an eye opening experience, to say the least
i can say with some certainty that if state or some other acc school had the ncaa snooping around, i'd be much more inclined to withhold judgment until the end based on my own experiences

if you think it was really only 27k worth of benefits, then you are a fucking fool. That's all they could specifically prove, and even then, its done with imaginative numbers. Had bitch tits not been kicked off the team, they undoubtedly would have found more.
also, the NCAA should have been pounding the hell out of the university to explain how a kid with hardly any income magically was able to pay for 1800 in parking tickets. This is the kind of thing where if the university stonewalls, the NCAA should say "well then, you are obviously guilty of funneling money through the tutor." They should do the same with any one who refuses to cooperate. Take the worst case violation and assume it is true.
also, how in all of this do you NOT find LOIC? This is practically the fucking definition! Maybe they are saying UNC was so fucking dirty, they were directly controlling the dirtiness. That's the only explanation that would make sense. I mean, jesus, a coach on an agent's payroll and a tutor writing papers for half the team, and they call that "under control?" holy shit. The captain of the Titanic had more control over the flooding than UNC had over its NCAA compliance.
and JC, you are REALLY saying "nothing will come of this?" REALLY? take the fag-blue glasses off and smell the god damned flowers! this is gonna hit hard. Frankly, this kind of shit deserves the death penalty, plain and simple. It's a shame the general requirement of having already been on probation wasn't fulfilled, because this is devastating stuff.
And with all of this, UNC is gonna try the "BMFD didn't know" defense? really? what in the FUCK were you doing while YOUR OWN GOD DAMNED NANNY was paying players' parking tickets with money she didn't have? What the FUCK were you doing while YOUR CLOSE FRIEND AND ASSISTANT COACH was being paid by a god damned NFLPA agent?
on a side note, if UNC gets TV bans, does that mean we can't see us assraping them every year? That might be a boon to UNC morale, lol 6/22/2011 12:50:38 AM |

^^ I don't see how you don't go looking at other programs at the school when shit like this is found out. the whole fucking D-Line having papers written by a tutor? Shit like that doesn't happen by accident and only affect one team. UNC should be REALLY happy that the NCAA didn't try and look into basketball or anything else or that no strings pointed that way. either that, or the NCAA just straight ignored it because they didn't want to kill the cash cow

^^My buddy that was an athletic trainer for the UNC football program was telling me that the UNC basketball team has separate everything from other sports. It started back with Dean Smith, and Roy carries it over. They have different trainers, tutors, advisers, etc. That way if another program gets in trouble it wouldn't carry over. Most likely it's also so that they can keep whatever sketchy stuff they do hush hush. 6/22/2011 3:26:09 AM |

Davis may still be the coach this fall, but only because they don't have the COI until mid-season. Zero way he remains the coach after all of this is done, and I honestly can't understand why any UNC fan would support him at this time.
Also, no way they avoid a post-season ban of some kind.

let me ask this question, in seriousness...
Does Butch Davis' coaching ability REALLY trump his total lack of control over his program? Because if that's what UNC essentially states by failing to terminate him, they must really not care about the dignity of their program- because has a football coach ever done less with as much talent as UNC had the past few years?
You battle to keep a coach who not only can't operate a program, but repeatedly loses the Meineke Car Care bowl? 6/22/2011 8:48:40 AM |

I truly believe that we will now see how much UNC is "Behind" Butch Davis. With the NOA on the table it seems that they would have cause to fire him without having to fulfill the remainder of his contract. Before the allegations were officially levied, it is my understanding that they would have fired him with risk of nothing coming out and him being owed his entire compensation. The clock is now ticking, although I believe that UNC will fight this tooth and nail, throw every attorney at it they have (I am sure they have already set up a war room to tear this thing apart) and continue to support butch. 6/22/2011 8:56:31 AM |

^^speaking of recruiting, the flood gates will open shortly after the hearing when punishments are handed down. 3 seasons vacated, loss of scholarships, bowl bans, the works. Even though it could be worse, recruits will renig on their commitments and be eligible for immediate release;
Existing players may also get NCAA release to transfer and play immediately, pending a post season ban.

It will be hard for butch to pull those 3 or 4 5* type guys at the last minute without Blake and the "perks" he had available, and it will also be impossible for him to ask the academic board for any waivers going forward for dudes like Dwight Jones. I am content that these two things will drastically effect their results as well as limit their NFL 1st round type talent. If any of you think that it will prevent the wave of 3* and 4* guys that love baby blue, michael jordan, and watching tyler handsborough's will win games from committing to UNC you are not giving the UNC machine the credit its due. 6/22/2011 9:04:24 AM |

Flashback: http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/05/11/ncaa-president-wants-tougher-punishment-for-violations/
Quote : | "INDIANAPOLIS (AP) NCAA president Mark Emmert wants to take a tougher stance against NCAA rule breakers.
On Tuesday, he said he wants schools that violate the rules to pay a stiff penalty – one that’s punitive enough to make coaches and others think twice about cheating.
“We need to make sure our penalty structure and enforcement process imposes a thoughtful level of concern, and that the cost of violating the rules costs more than not violating them,” Emmert said." |
Now you have a school who has a blatant, overwhelming disregard and disrespect of the NCAA rulebook and American law. Here's your chance.

I really can't see how the NCAA couldn't throw the book at these guys. The program may be small chips compared to USC or OSU, but the violations are more rampant and blatant. Anything less than what USC or OSU received would be a travesty and what little faith I had left in the NCAA enforcing rules fairly would be completely gone. 6/22/2011 9:23:02 AM |
