Is LTE the 7.2mbps (or whatever it is) network they're rolling out (I think Charlotte is a test site)? I only ask because I swear I saw that the iPhone 4 supported 7.xmbps data.

I can't help but wonder if this is the reason for AT&T suddenly being so generous. Lock in all the existing iPhone users that love the phone but hate the network so they don't lose customers when the iPhone is released/announced on Verizon/Sprint/T-Mobile later this year.

verizon's network is garbage and a bunch of shit wont work on the iphone because of it (like using data while on a call).

There wont be a verizon iphone until verizon goes LTE

That's for the AT&T's HSPA 7.2 upgrade that they're doing, not LTE.

I have yet to actually have the desire to do both at the same time. I'm around wifi the majority of my day so I could technically use both but haven't. Verizon could probably upgrade to Rev-B while rolling out LTE and quash the simultaneous voice and data BS but I doubt they'd waste time with it.

Got it, that would be why I was confused

Things just got more interesting between Apple and Googles competitive relationship...

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/08/apple-revises-ios-rules-on-outside-advertisers-cuts-out-google/

Looks like Apple has cut out Google (AdMob)...among others... as allowed mobile ad providers.

Independent mobile advertisers are allowed but...

Quote :
"advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple would not qualify as independent."

That's a load of crap. I understand Apple not wanting 3pp development environments, but not allowing whatever data aggregator you want for the ads in your app is shit. (at least that's how I'm reading that section)

Makes sense to me. Why have ads for WinMo or Android popping up on your iPhone?

Its another 'App Store' for advertising.

^^ But it goes beyond that. The way I read it, if Google came out with a "google ad-words" for mobile apps framework that you could use to put google contextual ads in your app, if those adds collect any aggregate usage data, you can't use it on an iPhone.

You sure about that? How do you get around that whole server authentication thing? Apple hasn't flipped the switch for non-devs yet, have they?

Yes you have to have 9.2 beta, which the Mac version was included in that torrent.

I can vouch for the authentication as mine finished and worked fine. I am now syncing it up with my last backup

I found these instructions for anyone with a jailbroken phone that wants to keep their jailbreak. Also important because it doesn't upgrade the baseband so unlocking is still possible. Will help keep the value up if you're planning on selling it.

I just got finished upgrading using that site. Still jailbroken and on 4.0. Now begins the trial and error part of seeing what all's been updated to work with 4.0. Should be fun. :-/

ok, so either multitasking isn't working or I am doing it wrong.

If I am in an app (say pandora) and then double tap the home button to bring up the other "running" apps and select one, it is closing pandora. (music stops). Same with games as well, switching off of Bejeweled and coming back just caused the app to reload as if I had just started it fresh.

What am I doing wrong?

None of the apps will work with multitasking until they've been updated to do so. And none of the apps that are updated will be released until Apple allows it. Probably right about the same time they officially release 4.0 final.

So basically multitasking is pretty much a no-go until June 21st.

I have a question for you all. I tried going on the Apple website to get help but apparently I have to pay $29 to get a fucking question answered.

My sister gave me her iPod Touch to use over the summer. I make myself a new AppleID, download iTunes, find an app I need (offline maps) and purchase it on my computer. I go to iTunes and I try to sync. It says there's crap on there that isn't authorized to me, I tell it to delete the music and videos. It then says the iPod Touch isn't authorized to this computer or to me and won't put anything on it.

So now my Touch has no music or apps on it and I can not find a way to transfer the app I paid for to it. Any help?

You should be able to select Authorize Computer from the menu.

yep ^

max of 5 computers can be 'authorized'

if you reach the max though and don't have access to some of the old ones that are still authorized there's somehow you can reset that number but you can only do it once a year

I do that, and it says that this computer was already authorized.

Then I go and hit Sync and it gives an error:

Some of the videos in your iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "[sisters ipod]" because they cannot be played on this iPod.

My sister had her own AppleID account that she used with the iPod.

you may want to try wiping the ipod to factory settings and trying from scratch. Ive run into the loop of authorize? -> its authorized already -> authorize? without any new media coming in.

The key here is that iTunes is a piece of shit.

^^When you're going through issues like that with the iDevices, it's best just to restore as a new device. If you want to back up calendars and contacts and skip the iTunes shit, I'd use Google Sync (google it and it'll give you instructions on setting up an Exchange connection).

"Palm loses webOS notifications architect to Apple

Rich Dellinger might not be a name you instantly recognize, but he is the dude credited with bringing about the unintrusive banner notification system that forms part of webOS' widespread appeal. And, as of today, he's also in the employ of one Steve Jobs. The new Senior UI Designer at Apple, Inc looks to have made his way through Palm's exit doors in the immediate aftermath of the HP takeover announcement, and joins Matias Duarte on the list of significant talent departures from the webOS design team. We expect Rich will be getting his teeth stuck into the iPhone's admittedly tired and obtrusive notifications, and hopefully sprinkling some of that webOS fairy dust into the next iteration of Apple's iOS. Let's be honest, who here hasn't dreamt of an iPre?

Yep, although I'm wondering exactly how much they can change the UI of the iPhone before they alienate what people are used to. I mean, I guess they're changing functionality of the dock thing to accommodate "multitasking", so who knows.

That's my point though. It's not revolutionary at all. If anything, it's sad that we're just now getting technology that has been available in places like Thailand for years.

I gotta say, the multitasking UI on 4.0 is pretty crappy and a HUGE step backwards for anybody coming from 3.x JB who's used to Backgrounder + Proswitcher. I was wondering how they would handle the selection of what gets "backgrounded" and what gets closed down, and it looks like they just decided to remove that choice altogether and background everything. Sadly, it's exactly like the OSX experience where closing a window does not actually kill the program, but leaves it running in the background. The difference is that on OSX you can use Command-Q to actually quit a program, but on the iPhone, you don't have that option so everything is left "running". The only way to truly quit an app is to close it's window, then double tap the home button, press and hold the icon until it starts wiggling, then press the delete button that appears over the icon. I guess the bottom line is once you accept that the task switcher is nothing more than a list of your most recently used apps it makes a bit more sense. However, as anal retentive as I tend to be combined with the fact that some of the apps listed there will actually be allowed to be running services in the background, I REALLY wish they would have handled it differently. I guess they're trying to make sure that it's easily accessible to everyone.

i wish they'd fix some of the bugs in proswitcher though.. i'm not sure what causes the problem i've had but it seems to be when i get a phone call or text while switching apps. i end up having to restart the phone to fix it

basically whatever screen i go back to after hitting close on the text or after ending the phone call is the only screen i can get to. home button does nothing and double tapping it does nothing as well

it seems like there's another way to make it happen that is a lot more common but i can't remember what it is right now

Oh, yeah, Proswitcher's not perfect. At the end of the day, it's still a hack and for that reason alone, it's gonna have issues. I'm just saying I wish Apple had taken more cues from it when designing their multitasking UI. Namely the the fact that you only see apps that are actually doing something. Plus the screen shots and x in the top left corner looks infinitely better/cooler/whatever.
