I wonder why no one makes lever action long range rifles in like .338 lapua or .300 win mag.

Seems like it would be faster then operating the bolt with similar characteristics to a bolt gun.

browning makes a BLR lever in 300 mag and 338 (not lapua).

depends on how high the bipod is

[Edited on June 11, 2012 at 4:03 PM. Reason : i doubt you'd be able to cycle a lever gun laying prone off a bipod or bags]

Levers are almost specifically designed for rimmed cartridges and rarely ever for high-pressure rounds with a few exceptions like the BLR.

Also, a bolt-action is able to be machined with tighter tolerances. Additionally like mentioned above, long-range setups are best fired from a front and rear rest, which makes operating a lever action virtually impossible.

[Edited on June 11, 2012 at 5:14 PM. Reason : BLR]

a 300 mag in a lever gun is just silly. its primarily a long range cartridge and i think in this application its mainly intended to be a "30-06 magnum," which it essentially is.

meaning blasting bears etc at short range but taking advantage of the wide selection of 30 cal bullets.

plenty of better choices for this job in a lever gun, like a 45-70.

PDHSC? Are there any others in Raleigh anymore?

Maybe Eagle 1 has reopened their range?

the range at eagle 1 is open. I prefer shooting there vs PDHSC (less ricochets, nicer staff IMO)

Lever actions usually aren't chambered for high performance cartridges because of the way the actions lock up. The bolts/locking blocks just aren't strong enough and making one beefy enough would make it weigh so much that you might as well get a bolt gun. Early 500 s&w chamberings in lever guns had problems with bolts shearing. Aside from safety and accuracy issues you'd have tough extraction. Bolt guns are inherently more accurate too.
A lot of people don't think a lever gun with a box mag is right either and putting spitzer shaped bullets in a tube mag makes a lot of people nervous.

If your wife wants to get the basics in a classroom I highly recommend the wake county concealed carry class. They have a women's only one that was really small and the instructors were friendly and welcomed questions.

Yeah, but the CC class isn't that much more time/expense than the regular intro one and then you can apply for one if you want to. I wanted to get mine for hiking/camping.

Picked this up for $160 OTD today.
Needs some cleaning up, and I may refinish it, but it passes all the function checks.

Feels pretty good from just playing with it. A very light and crisp break. I'm guessing around 2 lbs.
I won't be able to shoot it for a couple weeks most likely.

Does silencing a super-sonic round firing gun do anything without altering the load to be sub-sonic?

I mean, i know it's still loud but does it make the shot more difficult to locate the origen ?

(i saw a silenced model 700 sniper variant and wondered)

Anyone familiar with Virginia's CCW laws compared to NC? I'm heading up there next weekend for a camping trip with some buddies and just realized that I don't know what's different.

You can open carry in places that serve alcohol, but not CC.

I'm under the impression that licensed CC is legal in VA restaurants/bars as long as you do not consume alcohol:

Quote :
"§18.2-308 (J.3.): No person who carries a concealed handgun onto the premises of any restaurant or club as defined in § 4.1-100 for which a license to sell and serve alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption has been granted by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board under Title 4.1 of the Code of Virginia; may consume an alcoholic beverage while on the premises. A person who carries a concealed handgun onto the premises of such a restaurant or club and consumes alcoholic beverages is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor."

2 years is recent.

Last time I visited VA was for an OC meetup, and we were discussing how nice it would be if VA would change their laws. I guess it happened.

it seems my blackhawk rear sight is drifted all the way to the right just to hit my 12 inch plates at 50 yards.

its a 44mag, the first ive ever owned, and i was under the impression this is quite an accurate cartridge at 100 yards and less (nice speed for the weight).

so whats the deal? ruger quality for me has always been up there. i know if something was drastically wrong they would fix it at no charge.

but id still like opinions here? front sight cannot be adjusted as far as i know. could be filed down if needed, but elevation isnt the problem.

i wish i knew what ammo they zeroed it with from the factory; it wasnt even close the first time i shot it. should i fire a couple hundred rounds before worrying? it should be broken in by then no? i dont buy too many brand new guns, so sorry for 20 questions.

thanks!

100 yards is no problem for my Redhawk in .44. I typically shoot 240g WWB JHP. Were you on a bench or free hand? I bought mine used so I dont know how bad the sights were when it left the factory. The Ruger message board has been usefull to me in the past, might want to start there. I do know that Ruger will stand behind their products 100%, no questions asked.

The cartridge itself can be very accurate. Sounds like you have a problem with the gun

Is the barrel clocked off center?
Hold the gun out in front of you like you would shoot it. Does the front sight appear to be in line with the rest of the gun or does it look like the sight is perpendicular to the barrel but the barrel is turned? Is the front sight crooked on the barrel?

Has anyone else shot it and gotten the same result?

If you have to max out the windage on a revolver then the usual cause is the barrel isn't screwed into the frame such that the top of the barrel lines up with the top of the frame. Another common cause is the front sight post isn't perpendicular to the barrel. I've also seen rear sights mounted crooked on all sorts of guns. I have a Ruger MKIII 22/45 with its rear sight dovetail milled at about 1-2 minutes past 12 oclock. The gun works fine but it drives me insane sometimes if I think about it too much.

The best thing to do is have someone else shoot it. If it still shoots the same then contact Ruger and have them figure it out and fix it. If you don't want to send it back you can buy an oversized front sight and mount it yourself then file it down til the windage is where you want it.

^^^^^well goddamn, i dont think im seeing things just because you told me to look at it, but i swear it looks like the barrel is rotated slightly off center.

looking down the barrel like im going to shoot it, it indeed looks to be leaning left slightly.

that would explain rear sight drifted far right no?

shit.
