he wasn't TJ Warren level efficient, but he wasn't just jacking up shots either. he shot 36% on 3PTers in ACC play and 46% on 2 PTers in ACC play. those are solid numbers. and i'm sure you were being hyperbolic, but he averaged 17 shot attempts per game, not 25.3/8/2016 12:06:04 PM |

To be fair, a drawn up play from gottfried wouldn't have worked any better. Best bet is to let your playmaker make a play. Our playmaker messed it up. Those missed freethrows made a difference.3/9/2016 4:54:08 PM |

^^once a player wins a championship, theres no reason to come back. our players lose, and ride off into the sunset.
On the flip side, if duke was having bad season after bad season, i'd criticize k's recruiting techniques, but even after they lose everyone and have a down year, it still turns out to be a lot better than our best year under got. That really shows you that even at our best, there will always be at least 4 teams in the acc that are better than us even at their worst. There is no upside, and no hope of doing much better. 3/22/2016 10:24:00 AM |

theres thousands of coaches out there. just because we had a terrible ad who struck out swinging doesn't mean thats an indication that there are no coaches who would coach at state. asking a coach to go from texas or villanova to state is just stupid. greg marshall and tony bennett were basically begging to coach here when we were too busy trying to hire barnes, wright, and callipari. The lowe hire at least was a complete unknown. I have no idea why we hired gottfried. A coach who had already proven mediocrity in the SEC

Maybe we need to start recruiting players who are unknown by Scout, Rivals, etc since that's what Mr. Unsuspendable thinks is the best thing for coaches. 3/22/2016 11:01:58 AM |

Who hasn't been mediocre in the SEC? Calipari is about the only coach to have real success there in recent history. Having said that, Gott did win a regular season conference championship there, had his team #1 for a couple weeks, and reached the elite 8.
He's been more up than down while coaching at Murray State and Alabama...not exactly basketball meccas. He's been above average here so far and had a poor season when we lost our starting shooting guard and people were already predicting us to miss the tournament preseason.
I still have faith in the Gottfather. 3/22/2016 11:02:46 AM |

no i don't base everything the whole judgement of an entire season on the random draw of winning or losing one game in the tournament. I'd take Michigan State's season every time. Sample size.
For me: 13 and 16 were extremely disappointing 14 was somewhat disappointing.
The amount of talent we've had come through has a lot to do with it. Taking a team with top 5 talent and squeaking into the tournament excited a lot of state fans but it disappointed me.
If you are happy finishing 7th in the ACC as long as we make the tournament, then simply state that as your position and I'll respect it. Things just need to be put down on the record so you can't move the goal posts to satisfy whatever mediocre result we end up with. 3/22/2016 12:53:44 PM |

In five years, I think we've had two disappointing seasons.
Year 2 with juniors Brown and Leslie and seniors Wood and Howell. With that being said, we beat Duke and pasted UNC at home that year and finished 4th in the ACC (lost in the ACC semis against a stacked Miami team that was on fire). Disappointing loss to Temple in the first round of the NCAA tourney. With that being said, that team was EXTREMELY thin up front. The Big Dandy Vandy was our only back-up post player unless you count Jevoni "Block that Shit!" Robinson. We also lost Lorenzo Brown for a key stretch in the middle of league play, and lost a couple close games during that stretch (UVa and Miami) that would have helped our psyche and our eventual seeding. So while most would say we underachieved (we were overrated coming in), we had some tough obstacles to overcome and still had a decent year.
Year 5. No one expected us to make the tournament this year (aside from some very optimistic fans). I thought we had a chance if we didn't suffer any injuries and our big men developed from last year. Well we lost our starting shooting guard and most likely second leading scorer seven minutes into the first game. Not only was he suppose to be our best shooter, but he had size, could rebound, defend, and was suppose to run the point for a few minutes a game to spell Cat. So not only did it rob us of those things, it also made us overplay Rowan and the Martins. Maverick and Caleb are cold, sub in...oh wait, we don't have anyone to sub in. Trying to guess how many games we would have won with Henderson is difficult...but here were our close losses: ASU (3 points), Vtech (Overtime), Louisville (5 points), Wake Forest (3 points), FSU (4 points). And I'm not including other games (like both Duke games), where we held large leads, a lot of them in the second half.
Anya was a disappointment and Freeman was never 100% (he was probably at about 60% the last 1/4 of the year). Cat was amazing, the twins improved, Abu was a beast by the end of the year, and Maverick is going to be a good one. But the team had too much to overcome and the results showed. Although it was disappointing, I don't the majority of the blame on the coach. Maybe he could have played Kyle Washington a little more last year and kept him from transferring, but our team was better last year when Freeman took his minutes. Maybe he should have seen that Lacey was going to leave before the season even started (impossible)...so he could have started recruiting earlier. He got Maverick late, but that was never going to be a 100% replacement.
I'm not saying that I think Gott will take us to the promised land, but I think he's done pretty well so far. We don't reload like the blue bloods, so we can't expect to make the tourney and finish in the top half of the league on down years. But hopefully we're getting there. 3/22/2016 2:03:07 PM |

Maybe calling Abu a beast is a slight case of red glasses, esp on defensive end, but he was much improved from last year, had many great games and very few bad ones.
Some off-season work on finishing and free throws and those 15-20 pt games will turn into 25-30 pt games 3/22/2016 5:00:35 PM |

I mean we landed multiple 5* players under Lowe despite not winning much.
We landed some 5* players under Gottfried despite being a bubble team 2-3 years in a row.
We're in the ACC, we've started finally having some guys drafted again with some consistency, I think we'll be able to bring in some solid talent. I mean had we just landed Bam for next year I think people would have massive Gott-boners going, but they're still bitter about this season and missing on Bam.
If we land this 5* C from Turkey, people will get back on board with Gott. 3/23/2016 2:44:08 PM |
