If all you're interested in is the multitasking, get/keep a 3GS. All the features of 4.0 will work on it too (except for stuff like Facetime, obviously)

Staying at 3.1.2 is only important if you're worried about unlocking, pretty much everything has been jailbroken at this point and there's actually an unlock being released for 3.1.3 in about a week

I mean, I guess different people are comfortable with different things. I didn't think it was that hard to upgrade. I posted a link 2 pages ago that laid it out pretty clearly. FWIW, It's not worth it yet, IMO, cause very few of the jailbreak apps have been ported over and Apple hasn't started releasing official apps that have been updated either so none of the multitasking stuff works yet. They just got sbsettings fully working today if that lets you know how slow it's coming. The only reason I can think of to upgrade now is just to say you've done it.

Or you could just upgrade the firmware, without upgrading the baseband. I'm on iOS 4.0 with the same baseband that came with 3.0.

.. I am worried about unlocking. When I visit the U.S. I need this thing to work as a cell phone.

I had been waiting at 3.1.2 because I hadn't heard of any good reasons to move to 3.1.3 yet and was thus waiting for OS4 to come out. So, I had been under the impression from what I read on redsn0w's website that the OS4 jailbreak was "for developers."

Or perhaps I was just confused. either way, I'm just waiting a bit to see what comes along.

Assuming AT&T doesn't have an activation server meltdown this time it should go decently quick. Figure on between 10-15 minutes per customer per employee. Not all employees will be ringing up the phones, but enough will that it should go fairly quick.

yes they try. when we bought 7 3gs iphones for our employees i had to take all their old cell phones to the store to transfer contacts. only 2 of them sync with exchange's contacts. they didn't have any problem except with my brother's old beat to hell only works half the time motorola q. my q transferred fine.

Well, I went back and went to upgrade options and that was down for about half an hour. But it's working now and the 4's available now. I just don't want to order it again if it did go through the first time... but they wouldn't let me "upgrade" if I had already upgraded, right?

Calling customer service would be a clusterfuck, I'm sure.

There's a difference between just pre-ordering and pre-ordering the first day it's available for pre-order.
