MLB the Show for PS3 comes out today/tomorrow
IGN gave it a 7.7 review.... I think the gameplay will be good but the graphics dont look as good as MLB 2K7. 5/15/2007 8:58:07 AM |

^ Worth a rental to check out at least.
Some really interesting new information has come out this week:
http://www.edge-online.co.uk/archives/2007/05/exploring_littl.php Exploring LittleBigPlanet on the PS3
Quote : | "Let’s start with the little. In this game from Media Molecule, you can make your button-eyed, hemp-skinned, zip-fronted little avatar run, jump… and act. The D-pad selects facial expressions: grin, grimace and frown. The right stick waves its arms around together, but hold down L2 and R2 and the left and right sticks can move them independently. And, in a simple stroke of genius, tilting the Sixaxis controller moves its head. You can assume attitudes, look at things in the game world, dance; if you wear a frown and tilt your head forwards, you’ll move in a dejected shuffle.
It’s an inspired use of the Sixaxis that cleverly exploits its dual nature, turning it into an effortless combination of game controller and puppeteer’s rod. It makes such instinctive sense that within a minute of picking it up, you feel that this is the game the controller has been waiting for. And then when someone explains the whole concept to you, you realise that this cute, simple little game – being made in Guildford by Media Molecule, a tiny team of less than 20 souls – could be a huge, defining release for Sony. No less than the game the PS3 has been waiting for." |
There is so much good information in this article I am tempted to quote the whole thing. This game is going to be so amazing. The ability to create and design your own character is going to be a lot of fun. Plus you can have more than four players in a group online. Think about the awesome chaos of a massive group of people all working together to design or interact with some huge world.
http://www.killzoneunit.com/kz/?p=565 Killzone2 PS3 Beta Confirmed
In the latest Game Informer they detail that Rainbow Six: Vegas for the PS3 will have both live map packs packaged with the game. Let's just hope the port itself doesn't suck ...

man, cac is fun, but the helicopters annoy me...the cpu has no problem getting to them, but i swear to go they get a speed boost on top of nitro when i'm in range of it
but i've won the tourney of both of the first two levels (rook and sgt i think), so getting used to it - a lof of fun thou the last level is kind of lame 5/16/2007 12:54:32 AM |

^^ A lot of the time the speed differences are due to the rubberbanding in the game. I am not sure if this is causing the exact thing you are seeing though.
CAC is definitely fun single player getting used to how to play it but it is so much better either with friends on a LAN or with voice chat online. I love it.

^^^ I think the last level is awesome. Actually, I think all the levels are awesome.
So yeah, it is much more fun online, so we need to go ahead and schedule a time for us to play next week. I'm down with whatever night. Should be a good time.
Little Big Planet really does look like its going to be a lot of fun. We'll just have to wait and see. 5/16/2007 9:59:36 AM |

^^ Wow there are so many awesome previews on that page. The information about Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank sound like those are definitely must buys. I am also pleased that The Darkness is coming along well as that game looks great as well. R6: Vegas sounds like for the most part it is an OK port so I will probably be buying that as it is a lot of fun on the 360 and it is the only Ubisoft game I actually want. So many good games coming.

It's a demo - if they made demos impossibly hard, nobody would buy the game. Hell, even in Ninja Gaiden Sigma, they had the demo on the first level but with upgraded weapons and such.
And you play as Federer, Nadal, Sharapova, etc. on the demo, not joe schmoe who you have to train up to compete. 5/21/2007 3:14:12 PM |

There was just a really long, nice trailer released for Folks Soul. It has been getting a positive response from people who have played the demo. It comes out next month in Japan and should get a US release later this year. Another game I will be picking up. 5/21/2007 11:53:58 PM |

The firmware update a lot of us have been waiting for:
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/23/ps3-firmware-1-8-to-upscale-your-old-games-and-dvds/
upscaling for DVDs, PS1 + PS2 games. (true) Remote Play with PSP (you need PSP firmware 3.5 which won't be out til later this month) DLNA support for streaming media from PCs
It's all starting to come together. Exciting stuff.

Nothing is coming together til the PS3 actually gets SOME FREAKING DECENT GAMES.
Until then, no way is that price worth it. Thats why those damn things aren't selling. 5/23/2007 12:37:35 PM |

^^it does upscale to 1080p, if you are fortunate enough to own a 1080p-capable display.
^With this update, the PS3 basically becomes a Blu-Ray player, HTPC capable of streaming media, and a Slingbox all rolled into one. I'd say that's a pretty damn good value, all in all.
I, for one, can't wait to stream some TV shows on the crapper at work. 5/23/2007 12:45:28 PM |

This update is freakin' awesome.
Upscaling on PS1/PS2 games is DELICIOUS, even better than expected. Turning on the 'smoothing' option pretty much eliminates jaggies altogether. You can also set sizing options (full, stretch, normal, etc). Even the PS1 games you d/l from the store get the upscaling treatment.
Upscaling on DVDs: WOW! They did a really good job here, too. Especially considering they are doing this all in software (using Cell/RSX combo). I tried a couple different DVDs, they both blew me away (this is my first experience w/upscaling DVD players). They have also added options for whiter-than-whites and blacker-than-blacks through HDMI (no more crushing, yay!)
Media Streaming: If you've got Vista, it'll pick up the PS3 as a device and you can go ahead and stream whatever you want. In XP, you have to upgrade to Media Player 11 to share any files in your library. You can enable music sharing in iTunes to stream music. This all works as advertised, the interface is actually pretty nice.
Unadvertised fixes: Blu-Rays in 720p (been waiting for this one for a while, since the scaler in my TV sucks). You can completely disable 1080i in the menu, forcing everything to 720p. This solves the issue w/the browser being unusable at 1080i. Rumor has it, 1080p/24 is now enabled, if you're fortunate enough to have a compatible display.
I can't wait for the PSP to get its update to test out some of this remote functionality. If you can stream straight from CPU->PS3->PSP, I will shit my pants.
The PS3 is really starting to impress me. Now, all I need is XMB access from anywhere, and maybe a more dynamic friends list (ability to msg/video chat w/people while they are in-game) and I'll be good to go.
BONUS: I got in on the Warhawk beta, which starts tomorrow. W()()T! 5/24/2007 10:27:46 AM |

Just got the update and messed with it some. DVD upconverting to 1080p is now there! also ps1/2 games get upconverted as well. There appears to be some kind of ps1/ps2 "smoother" option now. Not sure if that was there before.
Also there are options that say "search for media server" above music and video. 5/24/2007 12:41:41 PM |

mmm..might have to start thinking about getting one of these then. Have a 1080p tv and the thought of upconverting my DVDs to 1080p, plus blu ray, plus a few games is nice. I currently have an upconvert DVD player that goes up to 1080i. How much of a difference would I notice between i and p? Would it be similar to what people said in the past for 720i vs p? The main reason I haven't gotten one yet is because I hardly watch movies or play console games so I'm still not sure if I'd get my money's worth out of it. 5/24/2007 12:47:51 PM |

1080I v. 1080P is noticable, but not a whole lot 5/24/2007 12:51:01 PM |
FanatiK All American 4248 Posts user info edit post |
The larger your display, the more of a difference you will be able to tell between 1080i/p.
The jump from 480i (or p) to 720p is much more noticeable, in my opinion.
Still, this update might get me to invest in a nice 1080p display sometime soon.
I've been reading that Nero MediaHome (or Nero 7) has a transcoding feature built in that works great with ps3: you just point it to your video folder and it transcodes it to mpeg + beams it out to the PS3. I need to get myself a version of that later today. 5/24/2007 12:53:28 PM |
