ah, i was waiting for that...you just needed to come in here to brag (surprise!)
suggesting that people are poor because they don't feel the need or desire to spend $75 on "pretty" ice (because it obviously doesn't do anything better than significantly cheaper options) doesn't lend much to the discussion, but rather implies that you feel the need to show off
so, i guess, good for you? i, for one, am proud to drink shitty buffalo trace poured over inferior ice spheres inside the cardboard box i live in 2/4/2015 10:45:13 AM |

speaking of shitty bourbon, this mckenna single barrel is pretty good. it tasted like cardboard initially, but it's much more palatable after about 5 minutes of air time 2/4/2015 5:01:46 PM |

sheeeit, i definitely put a little ice in some barrel proof shit. that damn 130 proof bourbon is hard without a lil sumthing to take the edge off! i try to get it down to 110 or so, then i'm straight.
that is some nice lookin ice though. 2/5/2015 2:10:59 PM |

Shout out to quagmire02, richthofen, and StingrayRush for the McKenna recommendation. I picked up a bottle for ~$23 and tried it with a few other friends last weekend. All of us thought it was excellent for this price point. I didn't think anything could top Buffalo Trace for the money, but it definitely does. 2/18/2015 11:21:35 PM |

went to my local store here in atlanta last monday after work and they had just put out a bunch of Elijah Craig 12 barrel proof bottles. bought 2 at $49 each, left about 8 on the shelf. told a buddy of mine about it the next day, but they were all sold out when he went by at lunch. i think i just lucked into that one, wasn't even looking for it was actually just stopping by to grab some rye since i had run out. i opened one of the bottles this weekend and it's pretty good, but not quite as tasty as the previous batches i've tried at a couple of bars. 2/26/2015 3:42:37 PM |

Yeah but that doesn't mean anything really. Blanton's didn't show up either but there were 6 bottles in watauga county a few weeks ago
I every county would offer that feature to search though. That's pretty sweet

Same as the Elmer T lee "shortage" - I presume just driven by buffalo trace holding back barrels to age longer and sell at a premium. Bastards. Weller 12 and old Weller antique too. 2/27/2015 5:35:44 PM |

Stranahan's is great, smooth and complex with a lot of character, and no it's not a bourbon, it's whiskey. Considering it's not labeled as bourbon, I'm not sure why anyone would confuse it with bourbon.

i've taken to perusing the wake ABC's specials list at the beginning of the month to see if there's anything (relatively mainstream, but different) that would also be a good deal and worth trying
JP Wiser's Rye (Canadian) is $18...anyone tried it? i read mixed reviews, but the majority seem to think it's good for the price and different enough from american rye to be worth trying (they negative reviews seem to think it's not spicy enough)
Bernheim Original Wheat is $22...i've never had a 100% wheat whiskey...thoughts? 3/2/2015 9:56:52 AM |

Shot in the dark, but anyone by chance making a trip from roseboro to greensboro any time soon? Apparently the abc store there got EVERY case of Elijah Craig barrel proof that the state received. I asked if they shipped store to store but the guy had no idea how to do that 3/3/2015 9:08:38 PM |

I had a chance to try some Japanese Whiskey this weekend, Suntori Yamakazi and Hibiki. They reminded me a lot of good scotch, but with an extremely fruity and pleasant nose, less peat, and a cleaner finish. I'm going to see if I can find a liquor store in Baltimore that carries them, because I'd love to keep a bottle for special occasions. 3/15/2015 11:20:08 PM |

It was like Christmas in Winston-Salem area ABC stores over the last week. Most got shipments of the recently hard to find stuff...Ocean, Blanton's, etc etc. Needless to say they didn't last long.
Ocean is not worth the $80 price tag IMO 3/19/2015 11:45:03 PM |

I picked up a bottle of Jefferson Ocean this weekend. It's good, but it's not worth the $70 I paid for it. It's got an excellent fruity nose and sweet caramel flavor, but there just isn't enough complexity and finish to justify the pricetag. 3/22/2015 10:47:30 PM |

I've only had three of those, the Pappy 20yr (small pour but enough to appreciate), Blantons, and Four Roses Single Barrel.
I do wonder why they list Pappy 20yr as "their finest product" when the 23yr exists. Difference of opinion? Also kind of shocked that they list $900 as the price. I know there's markup, but I've heard tell of the 23 for far less than 900 bones. 3/28/2015 8:58:09 PM |
SuperDude All American 6922 Posts user info edit post |
List doesn't seem all that impressive to me. I think Pappy 20 is considered the better stuff..just because it's older doesn't mean it's better.
Haven't heard good things from Hudson. High priced, not aged for very long. They use smaller barrels which allows the hooch to "age" faster, but speeding up the process doesn't make it a better product.
Black Maple Hill - I've heard it's good, but I hear that "purists" hate on it because BMH doesn't exist. 3/28/2015 9:05:09 PM |
eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
Hudson is overrated, but Widow Jane is an excellent bourbon from New York.
That list jumped all over the place. I've had everything on that list except the Hirsch, which might as well be a unicorn because they've sold everything that was remaining in the line already. 3/29/2015 9:19:05 AM |

Is that one of the many that are distilled by LDI but bottled as an independent brand?3/29/2015 3:34:51 PM |

Something along the lines of KBD being responsible for the juice, but no one knowing where it's being sourced from. KBD gets a lot of their juice from Heaven Hill, but who knows what the makeup is, could be LDI. 3/29/2015 11:31:12 PM |
