that fact that there is 16 pages of posts about people still be unemployed is sad.

i always see now hiring signs up at places, guess they just arent the jobs people want.

i have two jobs and need a third but i would feel guilty taking it from someone who doesnt even have one

I have an interview Thursday. Its my first one since Christmas so I hope I'm not too rusty. I need to start working soon so these loan payments don't hit me like a ton of bricks in 6 months!

Honestly it's all networking. I'm just lucky to have been able to meet a lot of people, and I stay on top of them to ask what they're doing, if they need people, know people that need people, etc.

just be relentless and apply for everything that you are wiling to do (after tailoring your resume to each job) you look a lot more appealing/in demand once you have a job to a prospective better one.

I was like this for a little over a month, no responses at all. Just last Friday I had a phone interview with a company in Durham, and it went really well. Going in for an in-person interview on Friday, fingers crossed.

If you're feeling down, maybe try applying for different kinds of jobs. Just look for jobs you think would be fun (even if they pay a little less). I was about to apply to work in a bakery until I heard back from this company, just because I like making food.

Just keep looking you all. I'm very fortunate to have only applied to a few positions--3 weeks before graduation. I had an interview with 2 different companies. Then 2nd interviews. And then a job offer a few days after graduation.

phone interviews are great...especially when your current job all you do is talk on the phone to clients. Of course, straight out of college it would be weird, but now I have no problem with phone interviews, I just pretend it is a client. The job I have now I only had to do a phone interview, probably because the actual job was in another state and with the Feds, if you do one of the interviews by phone, all have to occur by phone, even if the person is there (contractor). A couple of my coworkers who were contractors got called into the conference room for their interviews, while the person conducting the interview was in their office on the same floor just about 50 feet away.

I saw a lot of jobs out there for civil engineers in my field and I applied to most every position I could find east of the mississippi. I didn't hear back from any of that, lol.

There's jobs out there, it just seems that employers are collecting resumes, only hiring on people with a good amount of relevant experience, and trying to hire locally. I haven't seen much around here for civil engineers.

Not sure about the other fields.

I think it will be about two years before there is really a bunch of hiring...and even then I think the employers will try to be leaner and have one person do the job of three, although some can say that has already happened some...but I see it growing.

yup yup yup yup. all of feb, march and april sucked for me. i had 1 interview in that time period. then about 3 weeks ago i had 4 in a week and got 2 offers and got to take a job i actually liked, and still got a pay increase.

I applied for 2 more jobs today, one of which looks really awesome. I also spoke with 2 contacts about work, but both places are not hiring right now. Also, I got a call about a possible job through a recruiter who got my name from another guy I know. Hopefully something will come from all this.

My wife got a job yesterday for a summer job (she's a teacher) at the first place she walked into. She asked if they had a lot of applications in right now due to the economy and the manager said, no and in fact 2 people had left and they were having trouble filling the positions.

i had a insurance sales company contact me while I was unemployed, but after I found out the first "interview" was an information session with about 30 people, and then there were 2+ rounds of group interviews, it wasn't worth going to the first one.

The baby boomers can't afford to retire now and their coworkers will be stuck changing their depends until they die.....

Woooh, just got a job offer and I start tomorrow! It's a 6-month contract, but it pays better than my old job plus includes benefits.

Dang, 3.5 months of unemployment. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Good luck everyone else finding a job.

the wife to be just applied to a job that is literally PERFECT for her...I really hope she gets it but we'll see. She has a degree in English and a K-6 teaching license. In college she worked for 3 publishing companies doing editing/proofreading including one of them being a children's book publishing company.

This past weekend we saw a job opening for a children's book publishing company looking for an editor/proofreader and the place she would work is literally 3 miles from my apartment. It couldn't be more perfect, but the ad had already been up for 5 days so I'm hoping we weren't too late in this job climate :/

It is good to see people finding jobs. I am having the hardest time finding something engineering related in the RTP area. I seem to keep finding things far from here, I guess it's the large number of graduates in this area.

^^ That was my guess as well as to why this place has such a dearth of jobs.

The job I applied for that a recruiter was collecting resumes for was only up for one friday afternoon and part of a monday before he took the ad down. It was for a job in Cary, so I imagine there's a lot of folks out there looking at all times of the day trying to snag that newly posted job.

Now is definitely a great time to want to relocate, as that looks to be the only way you're going to get any money right now, haha.

for those who are/have relocated - are companies still offering relocation expenses? I was thinking that with people so desperate to get a job, many companies probably don't even need to pay to move someone to another state. I know I, for one, would use my own dime to move to another state if it meant a good job, whereas in the past, I would fully expect the company to pay all relocation expenses.

Many companies are not fully stocked with asshats and will still pay for your relocation. I saw that on a number of jobs I applied for.

If you manage to get a job with the govt that's classified as a "manpower shortage position" the gubmint will send out their own people to box up and move all your stuff, store it for up to ninety days, then deposit it at your new place free of charge. I am taking advantage of that not too far from now.

I should also mention, however, that I saw a lot of places that were not looking for relocation candidates. Many of them wanted to employ local people. I imagine this is because they can start sooner, they know the area, and there are probably plenty of well-qualified individuals within range of every skilled/white collar job offered in America right now.

I know what you mean. I just got hired for a job in Durham... it's a little bit of a drive from Garner, but nothing too far.

The big companies might not be hiring, so maybe you can ask around to see if any little companies are hiring in your field? That's what helped me out.

I'm an ME alumnus, and it seems like there are thousands of MEs floating around in this area. Maybe I am just imagining things, but I'm not getting any nibbles oustide of sales and HVAC related jobs.

I was able to get a 5 percent signing bonus from my new job. It's not a whole lot, but it's going to help out pretty significantly in terms of moving from Raleigh to DC. And also killing time in between when I arrive and when I get my first paycheck.

In fact, they originally offered less, and I was able to get more out of them simply by asking. So, it's worth a shot.

yeah, big help.
Raleigh is ranked high because
1) as always, the 3 major universities (which also happen to dump thousands of graduates into the area each year looking for jobs)
2) while unemployment has doubled, it's still lower than the NC average, ignoring the fact that outside of Charlotte and Raleigh, the rest of the state's economy is based on Ag, Textiles and manufacturing. So, yeah - those areas have taken a bigger hit than tech so far, but that doesn't mean things are exactly "good" in tech.
3) and it will "boom again". really? no shit. that's a big fucking help for people who are currently burning through their savings

I just applied for another job yesterday. I think I have maxed out (or about) my income potential at my present job. It is weird, some people will just stay in the same job for 10 years; however, for me, once i feel like the upward mobility is gone I start applying for positions that have the advancement potential. Some of those people have a house and kids etc that keeps them at one location forever. I have moved 3 times to 3 different states for advancement jobs. When I first starting working for them 5 years ago, they said mobility is the key to advancement and they were not kidding! It does start getting old after awhile when you are constantly relocating!

Anyone looking for jobs in the alternative energy area? I ask this because I think most of the "green tech" stuff is just media hype with no actual job creation. I know now is a recession but still with all the media hype and tax incentives you would think there would be something there..

when i search for green jobs all i get is colorful webpages filled with flowery talk and no real career pages.

i was looking for green tech stuff when i was unemployed recently. perhaps i didn't do very thorough research, as i would think charlotte would have a few players, but i couldn't find anything other than duke energy. and i'm wary of working for companies with > 500 employees so i didn't pursue it too hard
