check your system logs when it happens. Windows Backup doesn't lock your system, though you might see a little disc access latency. In any case it sounds like a pretty serious bug.

I think it's related to the ultramon replacement program I'm using. Driving right now so I can't look it up but symptoms started around when I installed it and it maxxes out the CPU sometimes when it happens or right before

^^uh, unless it's in a non-indexed location, I have no idea why it wouldn't show up.

Windows search is freaking amazing for me, one of the best improvements I've seen.

So what are the options for Blu-ray & HD DVD support? No native support, so we'll have to get a Windows 7 compatible version of PowerDVD or WinDVD?

guess that's it. i had to turn the shit off after it maxed out one core for 24 hours straight. the original beta i tried didn't do that shit which i was very happy about but RC1 did for me.

dunno what's going on.. i don't search enough usually to care, though

Wait, so you turned off indexing, and then expected Windows Search to work? C'mon dude.

You should never turn indexing off in Win7. My guess is that some other shit you installed spiked the core. Turn indexing back on and live the happy life.

the indexer service is pretty lightweight this time around. Altho one thing that was bugging me:

Im current still running beta1 cause im lazy. When hit start and then start typing a url, it doesn't show me URLs from my IE history. If I open IE and start typing the same url in the address bar results show up like they should. Are web browser results supposed to show up in the start menu search? If not they should cause its annoying to have to type out full urls every time.

Man, that new search thing that came as some suggestion on automatic updates (for XP) was so terrible I ended up reformatting the system.

The process was always maxing out the CPU and keeping the disks rolling. Don't know what it was attempting to do (create the initial index I guess) but it never finished, even after leaving it for a weekend.

Hope they fixed that, or made it optional. I do a search maybe twice a year. Nothing worth eating up resources to keep some unused process running.

You can turn it off in eithe OS. In the 7000 build it worked beautifully for me but in 7100 it acted like what you're describing. Ah well..it's cool when it works right. Hopefully it does for me in the final release

Windows search was completely overhauled from the ground up for Win7. NO more cpu spiking, no more system slowdowns, no more disk churning.

Whatever happened to you ScHpEnXeL, I would bet damn near anything that you did something wacky as shit to cause that to happen. I use it religiously and have a SHIT TON of files that are regularly changing. And I've not heard a whisper of any problems of that sort internally or externally.

Having a hell of a time trying to get my eSata working w/ hot plugging. MB is supposed to support it, but it might just be supporting it terribly. I got a $30 pci-e card to try out, we'll see if that works.

It's not beta, it's the RC. Downside is you will have to upgrade within a year to the full version.

Here's the rundown of prices for a full version:

* Windows 7 Home Premium: $199.99
* Windows 7 Professional: $299.99
* Windows 7 Ultimate: $319.99

The prices are lower for users who are upgrading from Windows XP or Vista:

* Windows 7 Home Premium: $119.99
* Windows 7 Professional: $199.99
* Windows 7 Ultimate: $219.99

Starting tomorrow, US customers will be able to pre-order the operating system at much lower prices:

* Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade pre-order: $49.99
* Windows 7 Professional Upgrade pre-order: $99.99

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx

And we have the answer for people who need a new PC now but still want to get Windows 7 and that’s the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program, which kicks off tomorrow, June 26th! Anyone who buys a PC from a participating OEM or retailer with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate on it will all receive an upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows 7 at little or no cost to customers. The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program will be available until January 31st, 2010 – and is global! - see: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/upgrade.aspx

not sure if this has been posted in here yet, but if you're like me and still running the beta, you're gonna be boned come Wednesday

i found something called TimerNuke (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/30/timernuke-crack-free-download-to-disable-activation-of-windows-7-and-server-2008/) that says it'll stop it

hopefully it'll hold me over in the interim before 7 is officially released

question about ^

ran it on a coworkers computer earlier today. says it finished fine but it's still saying it expires tomorrow.

is it screwed tomorrow or is it just going to keep working or what??

Quote :
"actually does not stop the activation grace period countdown clock. Instead, it disables and removes several several services and files related to software licensing in order to bypass and skip the activation requirement.
"

is what it says on the page.. i assume that means it'll keep counting down but won't do anything bad when it gets to 0??

I did the same. I bought a refurb dell for ~215 a few months ago and it came with Vista. I haven't had too many issues with Vista (but, for the last few months, I haven't done a whole lot except surf the web) but $50 seemed cheap enough for an upgrade to Windows7.

I debated for a while, but the differences in Home Premium and Professional don't seem to add up to $50 extra.

So how do the upgrade versions work? I have legit versions of XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. Do the upgrade versions require that I insert one of my old CDs to validate that I had a legit license of XP or Vista?

i haven't really kept up with this thread so sorry if it's already been discussed

i've got win7 RC on my media server and it doesn't want to let me save files anywhere other than my home folder. in the last 2 days i've tried to save files to c:\ and c:\inetpub\wwwroot and it complained at me to contact an administrator. my account is an admin account so i don't know what the problem is. anybody know what's going on?

edit: google says it's a Notepad must be run as Administrator problem. Guess I forgot to disable UAC. hopefully this will fix it

^^any particular reason you guys are spending the extra $50 for pro? I don't see much of an advantage this time around (compared to the differences in Vista and XP).
