i say 'barka" actually. when you shorten things down you dont have to say it the exact same way. there are examples out there, but i dont feel like trying to think of it right now

im sure its either barsa or bartha over there. but i dont think anyone on here is of spanish heritage or a clear cut barcelona fan to care enough

Ok, that bugs me, so here's my lesson of the day. You don't have to pronounce anything right, but calling Barcelona "Barka" is like calling Manchester United "Mankester Uneeted". Actually it's a little weirder. Most of us that know any Spanish, know that "barca" is a boat - they are not calling themselves the boat. Truth is, the short for the team is actually spelled "Barça" and it's not in spanish, but Catalan, as Spanish does not contain the cedilla character. In Catalan the cedilla indicates a soft c (the "s" sound) in a place where normally a c would be hard (i.e. before a vowel as in the Spanish "barca" [boat]). Many Spanish outside of the region pronounce the city as "Barthelona" due to a dialectal difference in which c and s do not create the same sound. Thus in Spanish, "Bartha" is accepted. However, truly it should be pronounced "Barsa" as this is the Catalan, and the shortened version of the city name - why go creating names for it?
