that is an awful argument
why not project his stats over 40 minutes? just as realistic

Yeah who would ever look at a player does when he's in the game and then try to project what he'll do next year when he's in the game.
What a stupid idea!
Clearly, the better solution is just to pick random numbers and then fervently defend them. 4/8/2011 12:16:19 AM |

face, seriously I stopped after the flat footed RH was called one the best rebounders in the country. And I will put money (with odds) on him not averaging a double double next year. No laftabullshit either.
And please don't turn this into me bashing a player, I'm just realistic.

Well if he wants to travel around turkey he will go out now. He needs to listen to those carolina boys. Looks like everyone down the road is staying which might be pretty fucking dangerous. 4/8/2011 7:31:31 AM |

^^say what you will about rich, but the boy produces when he's on the floor. you don't have to big a big leaper to be a great rebounder.

i could see him thriving in the high post. he's got a pretty solid mid-range jumper, he's an excellent passer for a guy his size and he's got a good body for setting those rub screens. don't underestimate him, he may surprise some folks this year. 4/8/2011 7:49:25 AM |

face's argument is legit. Howell is productive and a very good rebounder WHEN he plays. But he commits too many stupid, lazy fouls to stay on the court long enough to put up big numbers. His conditioning needs to improve as well, but projecting a player's stats over 30 minutes (a reasonable number for a starter) is not some crazy idea like some in this thread are saying. 4/8/2011 7:59:02 AM |

I frankly don't think its reasonable to predict a career backup on one of the worst teams in the league will accomplish what few players in ACC history have done. 4/8/2011 8:53:05 AM |
Ernie All American 45943 Posts user info edit post |
I'm not saying he'll do it either (though I'd say he definitely has the potential for it), I'm just defending his rebounding cred.
And more than just a few players in ACC history have averaged a double-double. There were three this year. 4/8/2011 8:56:15 AM |

Howell had he 6th highest offensive rebound percentage and 107th highest defensive rebound percentage in the entire country last year while playing in the ACC. If you are going to argue that he isn't a premeire rebounder then you probably didn't watch us play the last two years.
He's not Dejuan Blair or Dennis Rodman, but he is the best rebounder we've had in the past decade. Only JJ Hickson is even close. 4/8/2011 8:57:48 AM |

i think Howell is going to do some great things before he leaves State
however, you can't just multiply his stats and assume that's how he'll produce given more minutes
there's so much more to it...his conditioning has to be above board, he needs to be able to fight through inevitable double teams in the low post, and he has to have better shot selection
he was able to get away with a lot when Tracy Smith was on the court with him, because he demanded most of the attention 4/8/2011 9:01:19 AM |

face's numbers were definitely a stretch, but that's nothing new, consider the source.
i do feel that richard is very capable of producing on that level if he continues to work on his conditioning. now let's get back to talking about how cj leslie is the next tom chambers. 4/8/2011 9:02:35 AM |

Getting 30 mins-gm will be the toughest part since we have so many bodies down low.
I think he'll be more like 25 since we have an emerging vandy and painter along with the addition of uchebo and the possible return of leslie.
At 25 mins, the double double is pretty unlikely.
With tracy gone though I expect his points per minute will higher as we'll be forced to use him more.
A lot of variables with the new coaching staff though obviously 4/8/2011 11:03:21 AM |

From the article:

According to Coach Gotti, everyone should be staying:
Quote : | "Gottfried said since his arrival he has met one-on-one with all of the current basketball players and spoken to their families.
“We’re just trying to make sure we connect with these guys, we didn’t recruit them,” said Gottfried, “and so we have a job to do to make sure there’s some trust built.”
He said that all of the players have told him they plan on being back at NC State next year, but he understands that there is always a level of uncertainty with a coaching change and the players may still change their minds.
For now Gottfried said it’s a matter of getting the players to understand what he is about as a coach and see how they will fit in." |

Quote : | "N.C. State's Leslie mum as NBA deadline arrives
BY KEN TYSIAC - Staff Writer
N.C. State sports information director Annabelle Myers said early Sunday evening that to her knowledge, Wolfpack forward C.J. Leslie had not declared for the NBA Draft.
Myers said the N.C. State staff did not expect Leslie, a rising sophomore, to enter the draft.
The deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft was 11:59 p.m. Sunday. (For any updates that occurred after press time for this edition, go to newsobserver.com/sports.)
Leslie's last public comment about his plans came April 5 after the news conference announcing the hiring of coach Mark Gottfried. At that time, Leslie said he still hadn't decided whether to enter the draft.
"I'd like to sit down, meet with Coach, get to know his ins and outs and what he's about," Leslie said. "So that's what I'm going to do."
Leslie was a McDonald's All-American in 2010 and is considered to be quick and strong enough as a 6-foot-8 forward to be a productive NBA player, although he may need more seasoning and maturity to make an immediate impact as a pro.
"You've got to be impressed with Leslie's athleticism," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said after the Blue Devils' first meeting with N.C. State this season. "He's got pro athletic ability and is a monster on the boards."
A Holly Springs native who played for Word of God Academy in high school, Leslie ranked second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg) and led N.C. State in rebounding (7.2 rpg) as a freshman.
He was chosen to the ACC all-freshman team, but he also had his struggles as N.C. State finished 15-16 in coach Sidney Lowe's final season. Leslie shot just 43.3 percent and was suspended for a game against Duke in early February for an unspecified violation of team rules.
Leslie would give N.C. State three returning starters. The only senior starters in 2010-11 were Tracy Smith and Javier Gonzalez. " |
