Haven't read much on the update, but here's a question... can you build several portals? If so, how do the portals map across worlds? Like you build a portal, in the other world there's a lava pit 30 squares to the right. Go back to the regular world, build another portal 30 squares to the right. I was really thinking along the lines of bases/caves that are only accessible via a portal in the slip...
Of course you could always access them via a pickaxe, but that's the idea. Maybe more useful in accessing underwater bases.

Rumors are that you'll need a block of the new reddish stone in the Slip.
^^ Keep in mind there are some who've been playing this game a LOT longer than you...as in, two years...who prefer Creative mode. You are the newb, my friend.
At the moment, with no player damage, multiplayer is only as useful as the free Creative mode. There is no reason or incentive to try and emulate the end state of this game until some things get fixed to make it worth bothering.

hmmm.... I'm having some trouble connecting two of my bases by portals.
I started with base 1. I portal in and it automatically builds a portal in the Nether. I built another portal in the Nether that landed me pretty damn close to base 2 (but I want to be right on target).
I thought I would destroy the 2nd portal in the Nether, create one on base 2 and try that. But it takes me to portal 1 in the Nether even though they are far away. So I instead tried moving portal 2 in the nether... but it takes me to the same place.
Heh, the only advantage I see to this is obsidian farming.

loaded a new single player map to see the biomes. they are going to be fun and I like the variety. now I won't need to go searching all over for glass materials or cacti.
I've been reading some interesting things about the hell portals. if you build one, go to hell, and walk back through your original portal, it may or may not put you back in your original spot. some reports say it places you randomly in the 'real' world, some say they go back to the original portal. Ghasts can apparently be killed with a few arrows and drop gunpowder. pigmen aggro once you attack them and can take you out quickly.
regarding multiplayer, I've read redstone works as well as doors and switches. minecarts apparently now appear to function but won't transport players.

Apparently the terrain generator uses a new seed with the update. Thus, new chunks are not blending seamlessly with the existing terrain on my single player maps. I have coasts/islands without beaches, just sheer cliffs.

I just logged into my single player game for the first time in a while. I was down in one of my mines and got randomly killed by a skeleton and when I went back down there neither my shit nor the skeleton were there. I had an unbelievable amount of stuff on me. So, status update.
The new update has pretty much fucked a lot of things. The admin mod is only half working, as well as the fixes implemented. The usage requirements have spiked with the update, and the cool new features, notably portals and the slip, aren't working right (apparently some known SMP issues, working on it). To top it off the biomes aren't acting right on the new map, because we generated it before the update; also a known issue people are having.
I'm working on getting the server itself back in working order with mods in place first. I'll re-do the new map this week. Hopefully the biomes will make it easier this time around. The most time consuming part was leveling a large enough area for the spawn town.
In any case I'll have the server back online with the mods in place tonight if at all possible, with mods. I'm going to start working on the new map again ASAP. If anyone wants to help with that let me know. By help I mean working on the leveling, roads, and spawn area. Not getting a head start on personal projects. ;P

FYI for those who haven't been playing around in the nether.
Buckets of water cannot create obsidian there. So, no making nifty obsidian walkways over the lava. I later took some gravel and dumped it over the edge until I could find out how deep it was. It took 10 blocks to get above lava level.
