No votes in coaches poll so we are officially flying under the radar this year.

That means we'll do well this year, leaving us with expectations heading into next season where we will unflinchingly disappoint

Non ACC games: I say we win 11 out of 13.
I can see 2 losses between the WVU, Tenn, at Purdue, and Cinci games

Going 9-9 in ACC would be my basement expectation this season. That Pitt, @UVA, Duke, UNC, stretch is going to be brutal, but it will let us know a lot about our program. There are really no 'easy' stretches of ACC games this year, but after Duke, UNC, Pitt, Louisville, and Syracuse, it's a big muddle of decent teams. I feel that we are on the upper half of that muddle though, along with UVA. Really no bad teams in the ACC this year, just a few that might get unlucky. BC, Clem, WF, GT, FSU, Miami, and ND are just a notch below, but I doubt any of them go sub .500 OOC. I am guessing 8 ACC teams make the NCAA tourney this year.

Looking at the pictures Gott posted from when Vinny Del Negro visited and BJ Anya looks night and day different from last year. It's kind of crazy.

Agreed, definitely, but Gott has said defense was the focus of much of the offseason. Could be coach-speak, but it's nice he's at least acknowledging there's a problem instead of his typical "they gotta stop us too, PAL" approach.

Anya might be able to cover up some of our flawed defensive schemes but I'm skeptical til I see it.

I expect the ACC to be very tough for us.

^ I like it a lot. Still wish it was some version of the old wolf and that we kept the red lanes, but I like not having 5 block S on the court anymore.

I know, right? I hope Gott is recruiting guys who don't care about that type of stuff. Who are willing to wear the uniform, even if it's tired pair of cut-off jean-shorts, a pair of socks whose elastic quit years ago, a pair of white Pony high-tops, and a red Champion t-shirt with a number written on the back with a sharpie. That's the kinda guys I want on my team!

well then you need a reality check, b/c our players are 17-22 years old. maybe we can start recruiting guys that have been playing professional baseball for the last five years, but short of that we're running kids out there.

If "look the part be the part motherfucker" is our game, then we should probably stay traditional.

I believe it's closed to fans too... like the Richmond game a few years ago. They treated it like a scrimmage, I think they actually played a few games, did end of the clock/game situations, etc.

This is from an article about Michigan's secret scrimmage

Quote :
"Each year, teams meet in preseason games outside the public eye. Statistics aren't made available. Fans cannot attend. The media is not invited. Programs have the choice every preseason of playing two open-to-the-public scrimmages against non-Division I opponents or one "secret scrimmage" against a DI team and one open scrimmage."

I assume the advantage is that since it's not an actual game, coaches have more of a chance to treat it like a practice and be more hands on rather than just coaching from the sidelines

I just wanted to say that even though I think basing potential team performance on uniforms is retarded (for every Oregon, there's 3 Miami of Ohios), our uniforms this year are our best since Sidney Lowe's first years. Only ones better were the recent 1983 throwbacks (w/o the net thing).

Worst were either the no-effort late-Sendek era ones, the never-used Lowe NC...STATE ones, or the Robinson ones with the zigzag shorts. I'll go on record saying the unitards would have been a good design for a non-spandex uniform.

#60 seems a little low to me

I think within the ACC, you could easily flip numbers 7 through 9. I think we should be in the 45-50 range nationally

^I agree, with potential to be higher considering every OOC game is a home game minus the Purdue & WV games (We need to at least go 1-1 in these 2).

can anybody tell me why Pittsburgh is expected to be good this year? I can't figure it out

they had a nice record last year, but they were still near dead last in PPG, terrible at rebounding, terrible in FG%. did they bring in a bunch of studs that I was unaware of? They lost Lamar Patterson and Talib Zanna, hands down their best two players from last year's team

^they have a good coach and are almost always good.

We were around 60 most of last year. Why does anyone think we would get better after losing our best 2 players? It would be a huge surprise if we make the tournament this year.

If we go winless in the ACC in FB and the basketball team makes the tournament, will you quit TWW?

regarding KenPom rankings:

Quote :
"yeah we won't score well for this model for a few reasons. We lost TJ obviously. Also due to his 5 year results model, we still have the final 2 years of Lowe's tenure tacked on to our results. We were 70th and 97th in Kenpom's rankings in Lowe's last 2 years, whereas we have been 44th, 34th and 55th in Gottfrieds 3 years. Lowe's years are going to weigh us down a little bit for the next 2 predictions by Kenpom.

His model also can't project a transfer's success with a new team, so they don't take transfers into account period. Trevor Lacey is supposed to be our team leader and one of our best players, if not our best period. So I fully expect us to finish higher in the rankings than we project.
"

I'd put us between 30-40.

Like when Kentucky were national champions in 2012, then lost in the first round of the NIT in 2013? (i know, not a very representative example)

Gott is being interviewed on 99.9. Getting pretty excited to see this team. I think we really need to get to at least an NCCAT win for this year to be successful, and to build into possibly winning a conference championship and final four appearance within the next couple years.

However, we are a young team in a VERY tough conference, so we need to get some good early OOC wins, and then finish the season strong (much like last year).

Gott KILLING it about academics right now.

LOL, claims he promises kids to help them succeed in the classroom. Points out he knows exactly what his players are doing. Talks about making sure it gets done the right way and owing that to the players. Perfect.

^ That's been one of my favorite things about Gott. He's very good with the media and always seems to be playing to the fans with quotes similar to those.

I'm excited for this team. Very young, but a lot of pieces who all should be good at different things on the court. Obviously no major star like TJ, but a lot of guys who all are young, talented and pretty well rounded as players.
