Cam couldn't pass his wayout of a wet paper bag with scissors in his hands.

Better Panthers teams without a wifebeating scandal hanging overhead at home. 23-10
Passing: C. Newton (CAR) - 267 YDS, 1 TD, 2 INT

Hardy to the commissioner's exempt list. Not gonna pretend this doesn't hurt the team, Gettleman didn't commit $13.1M of our cap to a nobody. We could of had the the best FA LT on the market for that money. The advanced stats say Hardy is a bit overrated, good but not elite, but losing him does make our defense worse. Gonna miss him against Matt Ryan and Drew Brees, when you absolutely need to get pressure. Make no mistake, Josh McCown and Mathew Stafford are truly shit quarterbacks.

eh it makes getting rid of him in the offseason and getting out of cap hell a bit easier, especially if we manage to get by without him on contributions from addison or alexander (when he returns) or ealy (if he plays)

[Edited on September 17, 2014 at 3:01 PM. Reason : forces us into a situation where we can evaluate life after hardy]

anyone ever been to a game at the Raven's stadium? I'll be up north that week for vacation (NYC/Philly) thinking about re-routing to catch the Panthers game that Sunday and fly back to Raleigh out of DC.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11551717/assessing-cam-newton-whether-tier-1-qb-potential-nfl

Quote :
"NFL players are usually harsh graders when asked to rate their peers. Defensive ends and linebackers won't rate as highly unless they're three-down players. Defensive tackles must factor against run and pass alike. For quarterbacks, producing consistently from within the pocket trumps athletic ability.

The QB scouting report a veteran cornerback provided for the Pittsburgh-Carolina game on Sunday night leads naturally into an early-season checkup on the Panthers' Cam Newton. I had asked the veteran corner to rate each NFL starting quarterback on a 1-to-5 scale, with "1" reserved for the players he considered to be "Tier 1" players. When we got to Newton, the corner painted two quarterbacks with a single analytical brush.

I've combined those thoughts with input from NFL insiders and one of Newton's strongest supporters for a more complete look at where the QB stands and where he is headed in the future.
Peer review: Where Newton stands

Most of the feedback was positive, but the veteran corner saw limitations: "Cam has a lot of potential, but he will never be higher than a 3 [on the 1-to-5 scale]," our source said. "He cannot read defenses, he cannot time the ball, he is not good at reading routes. It's the same way with Ben Roethlisberger. He is more of a backyard quarterback. It's never one, two, three, step and throw. It's like, he's running around and, oh, the guy got open."

While the veteran corner did not face Newton in 2013, the veteran linebacker I spoke with stared into the Panthers' offensive backfield and liked what he saw: "He [Newton] was spot-on last year," the linebacker said. "That is how they won so many games. He controlled it. He had a lot more poise. Before, he was quick to take off and run. This past year, he was standing in the pocket making the correct throws and the right reads."

A quarterback with ties to the NFC South backed up what the linebacker saw: "I agree that he played significantly better," the signal-caller said. "He handled the position better. My one caveat -- and this goes with a lot of quarterbacks -- is that when your defense gives up 11 points per game or whatever, it is really easy to play. That is not a fault to Cam. Physically, he is good. I think he is intelligent. But he just doesn't scare me the way some of these other young guys do."

An AFC defensive coordinator said Newton's obvious physical skills command respect, and that he'd move Newton from the third tier into the second tier with another season of validation. But in looking at the Panthers, the defense is what has changed the most from a statistical standpoint since Newton's arrival in 2011. Newton's passer rating (upper 80s) and Total QBR scores (mid-50s) have hovered in the same range each season, right around average for starting quarterbacks. Carolina's record has improved as its defense has risen in efficiency from 31st (in 2011) to 19th (2012) to third (2013 to present).

Newton working in combination with a strong defense can make Carolina dangerous. As one general manager put it, games can hinge on 3-5 plays, and Newton possesses plenty of ability to make the difference on those plays if he picks his spots wisely. A head coach agreed with the veteran cornerback that Newton and Roethlisberger share similarities. The head coach wanted Newton to become more consistent. Last season, Newton had some issues against 3-4 defenses. He'll get another crack at one when the Steelers visit in Week 3.
Where Newton is headed

Newton was so raw coming out of Auburn in 2011 that Mel Kiper Jr. and other analysts thought he needed time on the bench to open his career. Instead, Newton became the starter and face of the franchise right away. The team has changed around him. Franchise icon Steve Smith is gone from the offense. Newton is in a different position as a result. That was the first thing Eugene Robinson mentioned when I called the former NFL safety and current Panthers radio analyst Thursday for an update on what he sees for Newton's future. He said the Panthers are Newton's team now, and the next step requires winning in the postseason.

Cam Newton
Jeremy Brevard/USA TODAY SportsNewton's next step would be to lead the Panthers on a playoff run, said former NFL safety Eugene Robinson.

"This is typical for any quarterback who is really good," Robinson said. "You start making sparks in the playoffs and the narrative changes dramatically. Do not forget, before John Elway became the beast that he was, all you knew was that he lost Super Bowls. He wins a couple at the end of his career and it validates him. Cam is going to have to validate the promise by winning in the playoffs. He got to the playoffs last year and did not win, but that is the door you knock on. Do it constantly and it opens."

I've spoken with coaches in the league who wonder whether the Panthers are ambitious enough offensively for Newton to advance significantly beyond his current level. Who cares as long as they keep winning, right? Carolina has won 13 of its past 14 regular-season games for the NFL's best record since Week 6 of last season. The Panthers were an easy team to downgrade this season after losing familiar faces at receiver and on their offensive line, but they've won with both Derek Anderson and Newton at QB in reaching their current 2-0 record.

"I have arguments with my friends about Cam," Robinson said. "It's like when your child is 4, you do not see him as a senior in high school. You get on them and want them to be better. Let the education process of football educate you. He was injured coming into the season. It was the same thing with Jeff Garcia when he played. Slide, dude. Let the game teach you. It is all part of the process."

Notes

• Head-coaches-in-waiting: Three coordinators from the Denver-Seattle game in Week 3 have a shot at becoming first-time head coaches next offseason. Seattle's Dan Quinn and Darrell Bevell interviewed for head-coaching jobs in the past; Denver's Adam Gase turned down a chance to interview with Cleveland. The key variable is always how many jobs come open. None of the 14 head coaches hired in 2013 or 2014 appear vulnerable unless the ownership change in Buffalo imperils Doug Marrone. Miami, Oakland and Dallas were in the spotlight entering the season, and that will not change. But how many potential head-coaching jobs provide favorable situations for long-term success? Not many.

• Mystifying Buccaneers: We gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers an "A" grade through one week of free agency. Seriously, you could look it up. Then, to follow that up, I listed the Buccaneers among potential surprise teams for 2014. You could look that up, too. The feeling then was that Tampa Bay, now 0-3 after a 56-14 humiliation in Atlanta on Thursday night, had acquired good fits for new coach Lovie Smith, and at good prices. So what has gone wrong?

The "three reasons for pessimism" in our Buccaneers Camp Confidential touched upon the offensive line, QB Josh McCown and Smith's philosophy. Losing offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford to a medical issue hurt because the rest of the offensive staff lacked NFL play-calling experience. Playing Thursday night without Gerald McCoy and Doug Martin also hurt, but nothing can explain how the Buccaneers could fall behind 56-0 to Atlanta after three quarters.

• Falcons' statement: With home victories over New Orleans and Tampa Bay, Atlanta has already doubled its 2013 victory total in NFC South play. The Falcons' next six games are against teams ranked outside the top 10 in our most recent Power Rankings. Atlanta then faces Carolina in Week 11. By then, the Panthers will be battle-tested after playing four teams ranked in the top eight, plus New Orleans.

• Matchup of Week 3: There's a great one-on-one matchup coming to St. Louis, one that could directly influence the outcome of the Rams' Week 3 game against Dallas. If Rams defensive end Robert Quinn can win against Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith, St. Louis will have a better shot at neutralizing the QB advantage Dallas has in this matchup. A pro personnel director I polled gave Quinn the edge over Smith at home, but he expected a great battle. Both players earned new contracts in the offseason. Both play for lines that have loaded up on first-round picks. The Rams have three first-round picks playing prominent roles in their D-line rotation. The Cowboys have three first-rounders starting on their offensive line."

Can't keep letting tackles just run free into Cam's face. Her just isn't healthy enough to evade that kind of pressure.
