If you are a Verizon customer can you preorder the iPhone without activating an account with ATT today?

Can I activate the new ATT account on the 24th (day I receive my iPhone)?

So I can still have my Verizon service until I receive my new iPhone.

I went to the AT&T store to order. Not too much of a wait. But their systems went down (again) during the process, and they are manually entering my order as soon as the systems are back online.

they did ask for the current phone number, last 4 of ssn, and zip just like apple's website, but i am thinking they at least temporarily bypassed any process that used them since all those processes are down

With the 3GS, at some point they "ran out" of guaranteed first day phones. I think this time around, they're gonna have lots more inventory, so that shouldn't be a problem, but better safe than sorry. It's almost certainly not necessary to pre-order today however.

My parents are both coming from Verizon and getting iPhones. The way it works is they are gonna add two lines to my account with whatever random phone number attached to them and ship the iPhones to my house on the 24th. The phone can then be activated over iTunes and will have the AT&T number. Then they will have to take the phones by an AT&T store to have their numbers ported over from Verizon. I don't know when I will have to start paying for the extra lines on my account though. Wouldn't surprise me if they started up that shit today.

So I showed up at my local AT&T store at 10:05 this morning (they open at 10). Stood in line for 2 hours as I mentioned before and a rep took my credit card info and said he would sign me up for the 3 phones as soon as the computers came back up. Then I get a call at 4:30 and he says I missed out on getting them for launch day because he didn't get the order in in time before they "sold out" or whatever.

To make matters that much worse, my Mom had gone by the AT&T store in April and got my dad 2 $100 gift cards so he could get an iPhone with them. Now we're being told that we won't be able to use the cards to pre-order an iPhone because it has to be paid for 100% in advance and you can only use one payment source. You also cannot pay the bills with the cards so at this point we have $200 worth of gift cards that can only be used to buy accessories at an AT&T store. I already warned the guy I talked to on the phone that my dad would be in there later this week to get his $200 back. And I'd probably be coming in to watch and enjoy the show. I'm actually looking forward to it.

But there really aren't words for how frustrating this is. This is how I know I've become a fucking slave to the iPhone, I'm actually willing to put up with being abused like this in order to get one.

When I did my most recent jailbreak I did the "build your own 3.1.3 with the 3.1.2 baseband" thing.

I think anyway, I was in a hurry & didn't really take it all in, but it was early on in the 3.1.3 jailbreak process.

Personally, I don't want to have to wait a month later than everyone else to be able to get my new stuff. It's the same reasoning behind going to see a movie on opening night, or standing in line for the midnight release of the latest book/video game/etc. If you don't mind waiting, more power to you, but tons of people aren't like that.

There's also the fact that the only way you'll qualify for a "free" upgrade to the iPhone5 is if you get an iPhone4 on/around launch day. Waiting a month to get the iPhone4 would most likely mean that if you wanted to get an iPhone5 you'd have to pay $200 extra or wait the full 2 years instead of 1. Honestly, that's the biggest reason I'm trying to get a "launch" iPhone4.

Why did so many people try to order their phone through AT&T instead of going straight to the horse's mouth and ordering from Apple who no doubt has a much, much, larger pile of these things sitting around ready to be delivered on launch day?

If I had any doubt about whether or not my pre-order from AT&T was going to be available on launch day I'd cancel it and re-order through Apple.

I got one through Apple last night, still said delivery on the 24th so fingers crossed on that.

The reason why a ton of people went through AT&T is because you actually had a better chance early on to just get through their system as opposed to Apple where you had to get through both AT&T and Apple's checkout process(both were bitches).
