^ Call ahead first - Ive been there a few times and having something in stock online doesnt necessarily mean theyll have it in stock in the store. Their store and warehouse are two different things to my knowledge (at least Ive run into that problem for guns they have listed on gunbroker that were 'in their warehouse'). 7/5/2012 3:11:15 AM |

i know we talked about this before, but i couldn't find the posts...
remember that Glenfield 60 squirrel stock that i tore all apart and was gonna refinish? the stock, barrel, and mag tubes are still in the back of the safe and the rest is in a ziploc bag and i wanna get it back in action before squirrel season because i sold my only other semi-auto .22LR. the whole thing (except the stock) was sprayed down with a rattle can of black. i've got an air compressor now, so i figured i'd get a cheap airbrush kit and try my hand at that. i guess my plan is to sandblast as much as i can. i'll paint the receiver and trigger guard and i think the magazine tube gets painted. i'll cold blue the barrel. would sandblasting and then 0000 steel wool be the best way to prep the barrel for cold blue?
my plan on the stock is to use citrus strip. i'll wipe it all down and scotch-brite/steel wool it and sand it down. i actually kinda like the banding that you get with birch, so i don't have to use a heavy stain to try to hide it. i'd also like to keep the stain fairly light so the squirrel and the grooves on the fore end stand out. i have very little experience with staining. suggestions/tips/tricks? 7/6/2012 8:28:22 AM |

Gunkote, ceracoat, and molyresin are baked on finishes that all contain moly. They're good for high temps, go on thin, and have good abrasion resistance. Ceracoat as well as certain gunkote forumlas have ceramic that helps even further with the heat and wear resistance. These finishes are best for moving parts due to the thickness and heat resistance.
Duracoat is a two part self curing epoxy finish. It's thick and has higher friction than gunkote et al. Its abrasion resistance isn't as good but isn't far behind. Duracoat is best for the outside of a gun due to the thickness and because you can add thicker coats (it's not as abrasion resistant but 80% of the abrasion resistance x 4 times the thickness = longer life). Duracoat can be more prone to chip and flake and can discolor with uv exposure or exposure to high heat (machine gun barrel). It can be applied to no metallic parts though while the other can only be applied to parts that can be baked.
Alumahyde is regular paint that sticks well to aluminum.
An airbrush will give you a more even finish and you can control the thickness better. On a small part a rattle can would be good enough. You can get a cheap airbrush and canned air for about $25-35. Expect to use two cans of air if you're doing a long gun and it's internals. With all of the finishes surface prep is key. degrease, sand blast (unless it's already parkerized), wash with warm water and plain soap, and don't touch it with bare hands. Parkerizing or using kg's pretreatment before applying the finish will give you better adhesion and durability.
I like gunkote and have done a few guns and parts with it. I hate the look of Duracoat because it looks like you put a layer of plastic over the gun but a thick coat of it would be the better choice on the outside of a real hard use gun.7/6/2012 11:59:01 AM |

what about putting a regulator and dessicant dryer on my compressor and buying the air brush kit? sound like a good idea? i would probably do more camo jobs and such if i had that setup. also, my wife wants pink AR furniture (whatever gets her shooting is fine by me) and i could do pink duracoat on plastic, right? 7/6/2012 12:07:36 PM |

A water filter on an air compressor would be great. Let me know when you find the fitting to go from the compressor to air brush because I haven't found it. I haven't looked hard though and someone's bound to make one.
I had a mistype in my last post where I said "no metallic" I meant "non metallic." Duracoat will work fine on plastic parts.

most compressors are just gonna be 1/4" or 3/8" NPT fittings. from what i see, it looks like most air brush hoses are 1/8" NPT. shouldn't be any problem to just get a reducer. might need a nipple too, but it's is very common hardware store stuff. correct me if i'm wrong. i know nothing about air brushes. 7/6/2012 1:16:17 PM |

i have a gen 4 G17 and can confirm i get hit in the face about 3 times per mag.
they usually land in the crook of my arm and burn me that way though.
still love it...
on another note, does anyone ever have any issues loading their shotguns tube mag? i always heard benellis was notoriously bad for biting your thumb, but i did have to adjust my usual style to accommodate their lifter design.
not quite the big deal certain forums make it out to be, but im no 3-gun competitor either. some folks act like its a benelli dealbreaker or they start welding the damn things. seems crazy to me on a $1k shotgun. 7/9/2012 1:57:39 PM |

Remember 4 years ago when I started this thread? It was to show off some checkered grips. Checkering grips is easy and cheaper than buying new grips. Just refinish with some tru-oil or danish oil when you're done.
If you buy grips then yeah, you need to buy ambi cut grips. Just make sure you compare yours to the pics. Some ambidextrous safeties work in different ways. Some don't require a cut in the grip but most do.
This is the tutorial that I followed: http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=182614
Quote : | "would sandblasting and then 0000 steel wool be the best way to prep the barrel for cold blue?" |
Hot or cold bluing always looks better the more polished the surface is. Sandblasting sound like overkill to remove paint and would leave a rough surface that would take a lot of time to smooth out. Just use checmical stripper and smooth it out with progressively higher grit sandpaper or 0000 wool alone will probably be good enough. Better yet, pull the trigger on the airbrush and do the spray on.7/10/2012 10:25:25 AM |

Yeah. If you're goIng to do any spray on finish just do the whole thing to match (in the case of a spray on finish sandblasting is good).

Just bought a competition Daisy Avanti 499 Champion BB gun for my son. I can't wait to get this thing. He shot one during the week at scout summer camp and had really tight groupings from several different shooting positions. I was impressed as it was his first time ever shooting a BB gun. They shot Avanti's and the one I ordered came with the 5899 adjustable rear sight, so it should be pretty easy to adjust for proper shooting. I would love to get him into competition shooting. 7/10/2012 11:33:15 AM |

i used some flat black high temp engine paint on a shotgun mag tube that had the parkerizing all scratched up from the barrel clamp/sling swivel.
baked it in the oven at 275 for 30 minutes then 300 for another 30 minutes then let it cool down in there all night.
looks great, seems durable, and is easily fixable next time it gets screwed up. only prep work was scrubbing it real good and wiping it down with 93 percent isopropyl alcohol.

^^ive realized after doing refinishing projects that if you're going to spend the time to refinish something then you might as well spend the extra money to do it right. High temp paints are reasonably durable, but for $30-40 more you can have a nicer looking gunkote finish. Those supplies are usually enough to do a couple guns so the cost per project can drop a lot more.
The krylon digital camo I did on my shotgun (see gallery) came out great but the gummy wear residue that showed up after use on the mag tube was ugly and annoying. I could had a nicer finish and doubled the value of the gun with $30 worth of gunkote or Duracoat. 7/12/2012 12:58:05 AM |

if i get to deer hunt at all this year, i doubt it'll be with a rifle, so might as well get some use out of the prostaff.

i guess i just get hung up because there are so many options. i was leaning towards just a plain old 3-9x40, so i figured putting the Nikon on there was a free way to see if that's what i really want. if i like it, maybe i'll just leave it on there and put something different on the .270.
i'm also wanting some more magnification on my .22-250. something like 6.5-20. it's got a really sweet VX-III 4.5-14x50 with side focus and 30mm tube on it now. i'd hate to part with it and i'd never get decent money for it, but idk what i'd do with it if i take it off the .22-250. too much for the AR i think.
