another n00b question: what does it mean to have SHSH blobs on file? As I understand, it means that if I try to restore my iPhone to, say, a 3.x version which Apple's servers are no longer verifying, Saurik's servers (or...somebody's) will verify the installation for me and let me restore to that particular version of iPhone OS.

Does that mean that this works if I'm restoring through iTunes? I recall once reading about having to change some settings file somewhere that made my computer or iTunes also check a non-Apple server somewhere, but at the moment, I can't for the life of me find the page/tutorial where I read that.

I have to ask because I have to restore in order to jb with Spirit

Sorry, I was mistaken, there's no current way to unlock the lasted baseband, but there will be. A couple of misleading headlines had me confused.

You could always use a solution like PwnageTool to upgrade the firmware but leave the baseband untouched.

it actually is multitasking, but apple only gives developers access to certain predefined tasks which can run in the background (e.g. playing music, navigation, etc.)
your entire app can't run in the background, however.

the iOS 4 multitasking APIs are pretty decent, imo. i couldn't think of anything i'd want my apps to do that i wouldn't be able to accomplish with just them alone.

with respect to using Pwnage Tool...

sounds like I would need to restore to 3.1.2 (assuming it doesn't have the baseband which 3.1.3 does, and as far as I know, that's correct), and then use Spirit to jb, and then Pwnage Tool to upgrade to 3.1.3 and thus have 3.1.3 and still be able to unlock?

friend got his Fedex tracking number this morning. Talked to a guy at the Apple store yesterday. He basically said the mall is opening at 6am for the line, and store opening at 7am. One line for reserves and one line for walk-ins. I'm assuming they have enough phones for the reserves. Hopefully it won't take too long.

I got the shipping notice for 1 of the 3 phones I ordered. All three were ordered at the same time. Weird that they wouldn't all ship at the same time. Hopefully the other two get sent soon. At least I'll have something to play with on the 24th.

With the iPad they shipped some of them up to a week before the actual launch date with strict instructions to not actually deliver until the correct day. I guess when you're Apple you can get FedEx to do things that they wouldn't normally do (on purpose anyway) like sit on a package for a couple of extra days.

They finally released the iOS4 enabled Pandora app this morning. Bout damn time. Finally I can listen to Pandora in the background again.

The Dev Team is recommending that you hold off updating for now, but it's all but assured that they will be able to jailbreak 4.0 very soon with traditional methods. If you want to be sure you could always use pwnagetool to create a custom ipsw to update to 4.0 and keep your current jailbreak (assuming you have one) They just released an update to UltraSn0w so the 05.13 baseband can now be unlocked.

Also iBooks for iPhone just went live in the App Store.

oh man. the iPhone people on twitter are going crazy today. Apparently there is a security hole that's been in all versions of the iDevices that they've known about for some time. And I guess it was just recently confirmed to be in the iPhone4 too. But everyone played nice and didn't publicly release it until the iPhone4 was released. So that means it shouldn't take long at all for there to be a universal jailbreak for all iDevices including the iPhone4. I love it when the mice outsmart the cats.

My phone hard locked during the install of 4.0. Going through the backup/restore phase currently.

Here we go -- my phone is finished "restoring", but is now "syncing". It's plugged in to my computer, but the battery is draining quicker than the computer is charging it.

Here's hoping that it makes it through the sync without killing my battery.

Made it through the sync/restore, everything seems to be working so far. Only odd thing I've noticed is that a bunch of books in Stanza lost the title/author data I had edited.

this doesn't look good...after it backup'd I got an error saying "iphone can't restore error blah blah" then I hit okay and it brought back up the update screen so I clicked update and now it's backing up my phone again! I wonder if I should just stop and wait a few days
