^i'm using that in class! We discuss how Europe benefits from heating from the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic Current and how their climate would be vastly different if it was just based on latitude. (I usually give the example of the UK being the same latitude as Canada.)

^that's one opinion, and yes, there are most definitely other factors, but to say the gulf stream plays no role at all is premature. and all science i teach is based around the idea of "theory" that is constantly updated with more data as it becomes available.

Western Europe is warm because the prevailing flow comes from over the ocean and maritime air masses have high heat capacity. If you remove the heat transport from the gulf steam, western Europe would still be warm because there is still a lot of energy in the water from summer solar heating that has nothing to do with currents. The actual heat transport from the Gulf Steam is a 2nd or 3rd order effect. This isn't an opinion. This is a calculation you can make.

Stop teaching people things that aren't true.
