So apparently it's a known issue and the issue is more with the signal strength indicator just inaccurately displaying the signal strength than actual poor signal, Apple is supposedly fixing it with an update.

Seems that a lot of the phone released lately are having issues with the signal bars displaying incorrectly.

haha my friend trying to activate his new iPhone:

Quote :
"Tried to activate my phone using my current phone, deactivated my phone the moment I entered my phone number don't have a way to call any more, gonna go to the best buy AT&T"

Fail.

-He figured out how to activate it online. Just got a call from him. He sounded very echo-y. Wonder what's up with that.

There are TONS of people reporting the yellow spots. There's a poll on Engadget and over half the people that have reported it that have iPhones say they see the yellow spots. I wonder what the reply from Apple will be. Could cost them millions to replace them all. Could cost them millions of potential future customers if they don't.

This is why I don't pre-order. I can wait a month while they work out bugs than have to deal with this kind of crap.

"A number of readers in our forum have discovered that their iPhone 4s arriving today are exhibiting areas of brown or yellow discoloration on the highly-touted Retina display. Users in Apple's own discussion forums are also beginning to notice the problem.

At least one user paid a visit to the Genius Bar at his local Apple retail store but was told that there are no replacement units available at the moment. Given the iPhone 4 shortages, it may be some time until affected users can obtain replacements.

The prevalence of the issue is unknown at this time, but there are a significant number of users reporting experiencing it on their phones."

the signal issues with the new antenna band are the biggest fail to me - i agree that they probably knew this was an issue hence are selling those "bumper" cases first hand (until now they only sold 3rd party accessories for their iphones right?)

I was worried that the 3gs was going to be seriously slow with the multitasking and other features.

Instead I haven't noticed any real loss of speed in starting and stopping apps. It's been kinda surprising. Plus it's been nice going from 6-7 app pages down to 2.

Yeah, I'm about 2 days late on this, but I hadn't been able to upgrade to iOS4 until last night.

^ sorry I am confused. What do you mean "going from 6-7 app pages down to 2"?

Guess I'm missing out on something with iOS4.

meh. either way, as soon as I get some time this weekend, I"m jumping back into finding a solution for the error 1015 problem. Everything I found/tried online last night didn't do shiznit for me.

Folders, so instead of having pages for games, travel, entertainment, utilities, etc. I've got them in folders on the first and second pages with a few apps not in folders.

It's easy, just drag one app on top of another and the phone will make the folder for you.

It even names it, but you can rename it right then or just by making the apps in the folder go squiggly later.

Quote :
"Update: As a number of readers have pointed out, there seems to be an issue with how many bars are displayed on screen -- perhaps even a correlation to how it's being held in the hand. According to Walt Mossberg's review, Apple has acknowledged the issue as something that has to do with "the way the bars are presented, not the actual ability to make a call," and that a fix is forthcoming. Indeed, as noted in our review, we've had "far, far fewer dropped calls than we experienced on our 3GS." We're not seeing very many videos showing more dropped call, but the bar change is interesting. Still, to be sure, we're adding another poll."

"Update 12: TotheFloor's video shows what happens when he's in a call. When the phone hits 1 bar, he can still make a call, but not when it's "searching for signal." He says when he's in a call and the phone drops to 1 bar, the person on the other end can't hear him."

This isn't really as great as I'd hoped. Took just 4 drops to shatter the screen. I mean, I guess it's still glass and all, but I was hoping it would hold up a little better than this.

I can repeat the antenna problem over and over as many times as I want to, I think it might've been the main cause of some the signal problems I was having early I just didn't connect the dots. It occurs if you connect the antenna with the bottom of the phone on the lower left. It doesn't always totally kill the signal but it definitely hurts it. I go from 3 or 4 bars to two bars, one bar, or no service, every single time. I hope this is fixable with software but I don't see how it could be outside of just artificially increasing the signal strength being displayed.

I made a video of what happens to my signal strength when I hold the phone. You can see it gradually drops over a 10-15 sec period and in this case drops to 1 bar although sometimes it drops all the way to no service, and sometimes it drops much more rapidly than it does in the video but, without fail, it drops to one bar or no service when I hold it left handed. There are a lot of videos like this already out there showing the same thing but my point is that this isn't a case of a few isolated incidents.

waaaaay ^^^^^ up there..

thanks... after posting, I did a Google search and found out about folders. d'oh!

I am glad to have that feature, because it got annoying swiping past pages for different topics to get where I wanted to go. I'd say that's about the only feature I like. Well, photos seem to take faster.

But I'm still jonesin' for my restore to 3.1.2 will work on it soon

I left the apple store around 8:20, after receiving my "ticket" from the non-reserved line...

The reserved line was over 100 people long (yes, I counted) and was not moving at all.

The non-reserved line will not move until the reserved line is empty ... which at that rate would have been another 2 hours probably.

Just glad I wont be out there til 2pm in the hot sun waiting ... I think I will head over around 330 to jump in the reserved line, and then try to use my ticket to get a second phone via that line.

ha, apparently the bottom left corner is where the 2 antennas come together.

What I want to know is how the review phones they gave out didn't have the signal problem. Presumably some manufacturing issue? Maybe there's supposed to be some light coating on the antenna?

It's absolutely a manufacturing issue. Anyone who thinks this is an actual design flaw is crazy. Apple isn't exactly new to this phone thing, they aren't going to release one with an antenna that doesn't work when you HOLD IT IN YOUR HAND. At worst it's a bad batch of phones, and it may even fixable with a software update.

Yellowish display will go away.

As for the antenna, not so sure it's an easy fix, in the article above they suggest the 'bumper' case as to keep your hand from interfering with the antenna.

UPDATE: Gizmodo is reporting that the problem is more likely to be a hardware issue than a software issue. Citing user reports of severely reduced data and voice throughput when the user holds the phone by the bezel, they come to the same conclusion we did: that it’s not something Apple’s going to easily be able to fix. Put bluntly, things are starting to look really bad for Apple.

UPDATE 2: It now appears that the problem occurs only when touching both the left side antenna and the bottom antenna at the same time (as the video below shows). One antenna handles the WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth (the left) and the other handles GSM and UMTS (the right and bottom).

As such, holding the phone like this probably induces interference because of the electro-conducive nature of skin. What this means, in short, is that since skin can conduct electricity, the two antennae have their signals scrambled a little because they’re physically bridged by the skin.
"

I've noticed the issue...but it's really not that bad right now. I know the bumper will take care of it, but I'm sure someone will come out with something thin to put over the antenna to fix it as well. As it is right now, I've had no real issues...just don't bury it in your palm.

I've had a couple people tell me the call quality is a lot better when I talk to them on it and haven't had a dropped call even when holding in my left hand.

it doesnt have to be burried. Forget making a call. Hold the phone like you are using it to read an email, then it sits in the palm and you lose the ability to use the AT&T data.

BTW. The sync time is dramatically faster than the 3g. I also think it is a lot faster than 3GS. I was able to sync probably 7 or 8 gigs of stuff in under 10 minutes.

Yeah reception goes to "searching" when i hold the phone in my hand. This really sucks.

Anyway:

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/06/24/1521948/long-lines-for-new-iphones-062410.html

Photo number 2. Me in the white shirt facing the other direction with my hand behind my head. haha.

-Ok this is a major fucking design flaw. Almost any way i hold the phone to talk i cover up the bottom left side and the reception goes to either 1 bar or searching. WTF. How'd they fuck this up.
