Nice. I am trying to pull the trigger on my reloading purchase but that initial investment is a bitch when you try to get nicer components

The light weight doesn't absorb recoil, the short sight radii make it difficult to shoot, they often have small sights, and the short slide length and grip length dont cut down on muzzle flip."

The latest generation of the 232 is by non means a mouse gun as its almost the same size as Glock 23 (take the all Stainless model + .380 = almost no recoil).

And I will argue that an fixed barrel, blow-back is inherently more accurate than a floating barrel.

^^yeah, but it's the kind of equipment that'll last the rest of your life and then you can pass it on. even if you don't keep it forever, you won't lose much money at all on any good reloading equipment.

i got the 550 at ed's, but they didn't have any strongmounts, so now i've gotta wait anyway.

^ Do you have an electronic scale? Was looking at the RCBS RangeMaster 750, seemed to get pretty good reviews but I haven't used an electronic one before. Since I am going to be only reloading for rifle (for now) I would rather get an electronic one to be more accurate. Not going to be plinking like when I reloaded handgun ammo, this will be more to really dial in the accuracy.

Also, what have you used for priming? I was looking at the Lee hand priming tool, didn't really see any reason to go with anything else.

no, i don't have an electronic scale, but i want one. i use an RCBS 5-0-5 beam scale that works great. you really have to spend a good chunk of money to get a good digital scale. i think that rangemaster 750 usually gets pretty good reviews. i'd go ahead and spend the money for the chargemaster 1500. then you have the option of adding the electronic powder dispenser. i weigh all my rifle charges except my 223 plinking stuff and i really really want the chargemaster combo. trickling is slow and my eyes get tired after about 20 rds of looking at the lines on the beam scale match up.

i prime with an RCBS hand priming tool. the one with the round primer tray. it works great. i don't like the Lee hand primer because it requires special shellholders and most everyone breaks the flimsy handle eventually. the RCBS has a lifetime warranty. Lee is only 2 yrs and after that they will replace it for half of the new price. i think Lee recently came out with an updated version of their hand primer, but i'm not familiar with it. it may be better.

why not just buy a Rockchucker kit? you can get the basic one with the beam scale or you can move up to one with a case trimmer and on up to one with the chargemaster included. they still have a $50 off $300 worth of RCBS equipment, i think. you could piece together your own "kit", but i really don't think you'll save any money. of course, idk what equipment you already have.

also: there's a video of a guy with a sartorius (sp?) scale like folks use in labs with an electric trickler with a corded remote. that shit is about the best you'll do for precision, but it's very expensive. not necessary either. the whole point of load development is to find a node so that slight charge weight and/or velocity differences won't be as obvious on the target.

I am definitely tempted by the chargemaster, it was the one thing I had been going back and forth on...I didn't know there was a kit with the charge master, of course I was only looking on midway, where do you get your stuff from?

not to give a smart-ass answer, but whichever store has it cheapest and in stock. i have been very happy with midway and sinclair. sometimes cabela's will run a sale on something i want, but they rarely beat the midway sale prices.

i've snagged a few deals on ebay. i always keep an eye on various reloading classifieds forums and have got some deals on there too. if i can get something local for about the same money (with tax vs. shipping factored in), i'll support my local gunshops.

the kit i was thinking about is the "supreme deluxe": http://tinyurl.com/cuxflxr

i wouldn't suggest it. i think case prep stations are a little ridiculous. a small bench-top drill press off craigslist is cheaper and more useful. their trimmer is nice with the 3-way cutter, but i like the simplicity, precision, and bulletproof-ness of my wilson trimmer.

anyone have any experience with a ruger mini thirty? the new ones seem to have a pretty chunky barrel and im looking at the 16 inch tactical model (with the normal stock, not all the crazy rails and shit).

im pretty familiar with the garand style action and have had a positive experience with a family members mini-14.

i could buy it and about a thousand rounds of quality non0surplus 7.62 x 39 for the price of a colt m4 im looking at.

ive just never been an AR fan, no good reason why, and cant see myself spending 1100 bucks on one.

with the mini-30 i would likely mount a rail where the ruger proprietary rings go and attach a good red dot.

would probably stick with ruger mags, theyre kinda pricey, but the internet agrees the aftermarket ones are shit and my uncles mini-14 confirms this.

prob stick with 20 rounders; the 30s look stupid on that short of a gun. might buy one just to have it.

also, rem oil now has teflon in it? i was under the impression it didnt respond to well to flame? hmm...

made my first attempt at annealing cases today. used 650 deg F Tempilaq inside the necks and spun them in a deep well socket with a cordless drill. held them in the torch flame until the tempilaq went clear and then dropped them in a bowl of water. i guess it worked.

Well, pulled the trigger and placed an order for around $700 worth of reloading supplies. Went ahead and got the charge master, got it for $289 (link below). Ended up going with the Lee Classic Cast press. Didn't really see a reason to pay more for the RCBS one, especially when I got the press brand new for $94. Most everything else was RCBS.

Of course now I am going to want to start reloading pistol again (I have components for ~750 rounds of .45 left and plenty more powder and primers) so that means I will want to get a progressive soon

yeah, i think $290 is the usual sale price now. back when retail was $300, you could catch it for $250.

let me know how you like it. i weighed out 32 charges of Varget tonight and it got me really wanting one again.

I've heard to stay away from the dpms LR308 lowers for 3 reasons

1 mags drop out for no good reason
2 they frequently double feed
3 and still have some FTE problems

i built my AR-15 on a Doublestar stripped lower. everything fit perfectly. i've got another waiting in the safe, just need to get a rifle kit. i'd also look at del-ton and PSA.

can't help you on the AR-10.

and i'm telling you, get an M1A. they are fun.

Not that you will buy one but an AR-10 lower is quite different from an AR-15 lower. If you bought a DPMS lower you can't use an Armalite upper (and vice versa). Ther are a couple different ones that work with Armalite, I would stick with those. One accepts more than just Armalite mags so that is nice.

If you could get that at the right price it would be awesome. More brass than you would ever need and it would be more than easy to sell by the lb.

Would you be interested in renting portable steel targets like the ones shown here?

If so, what would you expect to pay per target per day/week? How many would you be likely to rent at a time? How long would you expect to rent targets for? How often would you be likely to rent them?

I've been interested in purchasing some steel targets for a while. I figured that renting them would help offset the cost.

^^ Right now just .308 and .223 for my AR's. I want to get a bolt gun in .308 but I have been spending too much on gun stuff lately to justify a custom bolt gun (if I am going to get one I don't want to just buy one off the shelf).

I will probably do some .45 ACP reloading as well since I have brass, primers, powder, and bullets...Just need some dies and a gun that shoots .45 ACP

Headed to the gun show that is down here this weekend to pick up some powder and primers, if I can find a good deal I might pick up a .45 of sorts (non 1911, probably Glock or XDM, HK if I find a steal)

mainly it's just different methods of measuring pressure. 5.56 has a slightly longer case length, but it's fairly insignificant as anything except a 223 match/custom chamber is gonna handle a case that's a little over spec length.

rule of thumb is you can shoot 223 and 5.56 in a 5.56 chamber, but only 223 in a 223 chamber. i'm not sure i really buy it.

for a handloader who's just buying brass, it doesn't really matter. military brass is generally thicker, which makes it tougher and better for multiple firings (good for the reloader). it also usually has a primer crimp that must be removed for reloading (not good for the reloader, but easily removed with the correct equipment).
