I generally have remorse when people die, no matter the consequences. Smoking and drinking do not have you an inherently evil person. People need to lose the high and mighty tenor in which they are posting with in threads like this.

is this girl really that stupid? Just because she was your friend doesnt make her less responsible for what she did.

RIP Emily

Danielle, vehicular manslaughter sucks, and remember... always carry a shank with you and never let anyone of a different race sneak up behind you on the courtyard.

Says who... if the girl died as a result of her drunk driving, I'm pretty sure she's going to be hit with that charge.

Hmm, apparently, the pole did not penetrate the car. I wonder if she died from the crash or from the pole falling.

The crash was the pole from what everyone is saying, the pole is the only thing that hit the car and its also what killed her. It fell right over where she was sitting.

I agree also. If her best friends want it locked, I say go ahead and do it. The lack being shown for someone that was universally thought of as a nice and caring person that wanted to be friends with everyone is sickining. RIP Emily, my prayers will be with your family and your friends.

Eh, I'd argue that it's become a pretty decent discussion on drunk driving and the inability of college students to take responsibility for their actions. Quite an eye-opener.

This statement or something to that effect has been issued several times by several people in this discussion. It is is important to realize that clouded judgment does not absolve one of responsibility. That's why the cliché is "Think BEFORE you drink."

Danielle deserves to have something permanent on her record for this, she should just get a slap on the wrist....it is very sad, but she is responsible for the death of Emily. At the min she should be required to go around to HS's telling her story. I have read where people in similiar situations had to do that.

agree.

If her death prevents just one person from getting behind a wheel drunk, then at least her death has meaning. The more people it prevents from driving drunk, the more meaningful her death was.

Fuck it. I'm jumping in.

I think this a key here for all the people who have never, ever driven drunk. I bet you have driven drunk and not known it. Unless you carried a breathalyzer with you and blew each time before driving, I'm betting you've driven drunk--if you had any sort of a social life.

So many people think they've never drove drunk before, but that's because they have no idea just how low .08 is, and they made it home at .10 with no incident over and over again. And if you have any sort of a tolerance, we can get on up there to .12 without you knowing you're legally drunk.

So I think a lot of the people in here admitting that they've driven drunk before are just more familiar with the rules and with themselves. The people who genuinely believe they've never crossed the line might actually be the most dangerous people in this thread.

I simply don't drink if I'm driving. If I'm going to be out for 4+ hrs then I'll have one beer at the beginning, but if I'm within 3 hours of having to drive, I don't drink.

I don't really understand why this is so hard for some people to grasp, but hey, have fun ruining other people's lives with your drunk driving (its ok to make "just one little mistake" every now and then, right?)

That's a sure policy. I wasn't really talking to people like you who we absolutely know have never driven drunk.

Every time i drink...I know I have a friend who isn't going to be drinking with me. I've been DD before and not had any drinks.

Finding a DD is not that hard.
Calling a Cab is not that hard.

People who drive drunk deserve the guilt of their actions as well as any legal action the state may take.

No one forced the girl to get in a car with a drunk driver. She was taking her life in her own hands by getting in that car and she is equally responsible for her death as the driver. Now, if she had been killed by a drunk driver whilst she was in another car that would warrant charges against the drunk driver. But in this case, she had a choice to not be a passenger in that car so it wouldn't be right to charge the driver with manslaughter, death by motor vehicle, or whatever.

This is right on:

Quote :
"I just think it's ridiculous how you guys are defending the driver just because you know her. Let's change the situation a little bit and pretend that this girl was killed by a RANDOM drunk driver who hit her car. You'd be calling for his head, "death penalty on the spot", etc. And just imagine if the state decided to drop the vehicular manslaughter charges because "he has to live with it for the rest of his life".

But as soon as you know the driver, whoa, whoa, whoa, it was just a tiny mistake. Don't attack her! Who hasn't done this themselves? Etc."

And I don't know who said this... but really, this just shows the sad world we are living in, where [trite] curse words substitute for smart comebacks:

either one of those people, the dead passenger, or the driver...

...could have been me.

god knows why im not in jail or dead.

maybe its just luck or coincidence.

its tragic all around. and i feel sympathy for the driver, danielle. her life is going to be a living hell. i'd rather be dead than be in her place.

maybe one person who is going out tonight will remember this and call a cab instead of driving drunk.

Look, this girl's dead, and it's awful, and I'm not going to turn her rip thread into a debate on drunk driving or my habits. However, let me be clear when I say I'm not an idiot, and I know how many drinks it takes me to get drunk. Maybe that's not the case with you, but if I've had more than 2 in 2 hours, I don't drive unless it's been several hours.

I basically didn't drink at all until I got to college, and my cousin died the beginning of my sophomore year, and my feshman year I was lame and didn't really party.

After pete died, I made sure that I never drove after more than 2 drinks without giving myself tons of time to make sure I was sober. I either have a DD with me when I'm out drinking or I don't go past a 2 drink in 2 hour limit. You can accuse me of lying or not knowing or whatever you were trying to get across with your statement, but you're simply incorrect. If you don't know how many drinks you shouldn't drive after, you either shouldn't drink at all or shouldn't drive at all after drinking. Period.

Are you serious when you insinuate that anyone with a social life has driven drunk? What the hell kind of people are some of you? You frighten the shit out of me.

RIP again, Emily. I didn't know you but I feel for your friends and family. I also feel for Danielle. This is so sad.

^^Hey, I'm not talking about you necessarily. Just using you as a diving board.

And I shouldn't have implied that people with social lives must have driven drunk. I'm saying that people who go out a lot with friends are more likely to drive over the legal limit. That's a pragmatic implication that I'd bet on.

I guess everyone is going to come forward with exactly how they know they've never driven drunk. But there are still people out there who my statement applies to. The people who insist they've never driven drunk before when really they have and they just don't know it...those are the people I'm talking to and about. Those are the people I think are dangerous. People who have driven drunk before and feel bad about it and have learned their lesson or grown out of it--I'm not too worried about them. Also, the people who are like, "I can get shitfaced and black-out drunk, and I still know not to drive! I'd never drive drunk!" are, uh, fucking stupid...

^You feel bad for her? Cause, you know, she's the one who actually killed somebody. But anybody who steps to defend her is an "abandoned latch-key kid who turned into an irresponsible asshole who likes to excuse drunk driving as though it were no big deal really" and deserves all your ire. Hilarious!

Furthermore, were you drunk when you did all those stupid things that risked your life? Or sober?

If you were drunk, you're admitting it clouded your judgment.

If you were sober, you're admitting you didn't even need alcohol to be fucking stupid.

Of course your ability to make a decision is impaired when you drink...thats why you have a plan before you go out drinking. Designate a DD before you go out, go ahead and write down a number of a cab company, etc

Yes, I do feel sorry for Danielle..she lost a good friend, but thats the only reason i feel sorry for her.

Should I feel sorry for her cause she's in jail? or that she has to live with the guilt of her actions? Because I don't.

Anyone who says they feel bad for her, thats fine.

Anyone who defends her for getting into a car and driving drunk....we'll they're idiots.

^^I'm not defending her because I don't care for that fight.

My main point is this:

Quote :
"I guess everyone is going to come forward with exactly how they know they've never driven drunk. But there are still people out there who my statement applies to. And I think it's legitimate and poignant.

^The second part is good. But I'm not big on internet RIPs. I was gonna be respectful in this thread by not saying anything at all, but it went to hell on the first page anyway.

anybody who downplays the seriousness of drunk driving deserves all the ire in the world. that doesn't mean i can't feel bad for her. I do feel bad for her. I think she fell prey to the "oh its not really that big of a deal" mentality that we're seeing spammed across this entire thread. now, as a result, she's a murderer.

that's some heavy shit that I would never wish on anyone.

"If you have driven after drinking once, you've done it many times. It just happened that this time was the one that cost someone their lives."

Maybe that is true for SOME people, but you all speak way too much in absolutes. It is absolutely possible to make a wrong decision once about your capability to drive and recognize that that decision was incorrect and LEARN from it to make better choices in the future. All I ask.. please stop making ignorant comments..assumptions about people YOU DON'T KNOW. If you knew Emily, if you knew that her father was killed in a drunk driving accident 20 years ago, which if course, you don't because you are too busy judging both her and Danielle for obviously being way more socially active than the lot of you.. but if you ever had actually gone out with her instead of just making the assumption that 'oh, well, she parties a lot, so SURELY, she drives drunk / rides with people who have been drinking ALL THE TIME'..then you would know just how damn careful she usually was about this kind of thing because of her father. From someone that has been out with her and Danielle countless times, I guess all I can say in my continued defense of them is that EVERY TIME I have gone out with BOTH of them, we always got a cab home OR had a DD. This was not the repeat offense you are assuming (hoping for the sake of your entire argument) that it was, so I wish you would just get off your soapbox.

"Danielle, vehicular manslaughter sucks, and remember... always carry a shank with you and never let anyone of a different race sneak up behind you on the courtyard."

What I wish upon you right now is not appropriate for this thread. I wish you the best of luck in your future attempts to "not sound like an asshole".

...Can any one tell me if there really is a way that I can get this thread locked? As you can tell by my sum total of 11 posts in the past 5 years, I really don't get on here, but was compelled to respond last night after I heard about how out of hand it had gotten. Let me know if you do, thank you.
