you won't be able to find an acoustic that plays like an electric and doesn't sound thin and tinny 12/14/2008 6:42:18 AM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
there's that ^ to begin with
then there's the fact that a good acoustic forces you to approach the guitar from a different stance that maximizes its sonic potential
it builds finger strength, which makes you a better player in general
and you're in the air force, stop being a pussy
there's a sonoran at harry's, i'll pick it up for a minute the next time i'm in there...dunno if i can be seen with an acoustic with an in-line peghead though 12/14/2008 8:15:56 AM |

do any of you guys do any recording? i've been trying to get a couple tracks of a jazzy christmas arrangement down and i can play it smoothly as long as the red light isn't on. but as soon as i click on "record" i'm all fumble fingers, every single time. i tried adding a metronome track, that didn't help. holy shit this is annoying. now i'm just pissed off and had to walk away. any suggestions? 12/20/2008 7:46:53 PM |

none, i run into that same problem. when i was still in a band, i could play songs perfectly in practice, at shows and when i was just messing around but when it came time to record everyone couldn't go 2 bars without fucking something up

All this talk of alternate tunings made me realize that instead of getting rid of the Tele that I'm indifferent about, I should string it for Nashville tuning.

Didnt see this thread...I started a thread in the lounge but will paste it in this one.
I went to the guitar center today to try to get a new one. I found a martin I really liked. It was the DCX-1E. Sale price was 699. the sales guy and i went back and forth on the deal. He offered me the guitar, a stand, a used hard case (had a tag of $50), and a 3 year guarantee on the pickup system (supposedly an $84 deal). I guess my question is should i take this deal or give up the 3 year guarantee for the pickup system and the old case to get a new case? Also if you have any experience with this guitar, feel free to let me know... thanks 12/23/2008 10:58:55 PM |

i saw this guitar at the store first before looking online. im looking around now but yeah that site does have some good reviews on it 12/23/2008 11:24:12 PM |
ScHpEnXeL Suspended 32613 Posts user info edit post |
well now you've gotten me interested in that guitar
all the reviews are the same pretty much..love it or hate it. they talk about the sides being HPL..some people make it out to be a big deal, others not so much. the one thing i read that scares me is that production is now in Mexico instead of the US and since then there are more problems with the neck coming off or top splitting. everything i've read says Martin has honored warranties 100% but it still scares me 12/25/2008 12:55:38 PM |
Queef Sweat All American 1438 Posts user info edit post |
how long has it been in mexico? my general rule is that i won't buy something for the first 5 years it's been outsourced. after you get that far into the learning curve you're not taking quite as big of a gamble 12/25/2008 1:29:25 PM |
ScHpEnXeL Suspended 32613 Posts user info edit post |
I highly doubt it's been 5 years.. it has a lifetime warranty so I think I'm gonna get it. I'm gonna go by guitar center tomorrow and play several and see how I feel about it then.. reading reviews from people who just spent $1000 (original price) on a guitar might be a little biased lol 12/25/2008 1:47:15 PM |

yeah, when i bought my taylor i played every acoustic in the store, including another taylor exactly like it. i narrowed it down to those two, but i picked the one that had a small swirl in the wood grain because it sounded a little warmer. best guitar i've got besides my gibson cs. 12/25/2008 2:08:34 PM |

yeah..another thing i've been reading is to play all of that model that the store has.. most people are finding one or two that they like better than the rest. guess we'll seeee tomorrow 12/25/2008 2:22:04 PM |

all guitars are going to be different from example to example of any particular model, but import models are more susceptible to glaring differences in quality from one guitar to another
harry's got two of the duo-sonic reissues that are made in china...one was resonant and played wonderfully and the other was pretty standard chinese not-junk-but-not-great guitar 12/25/2008 8:55:07 PM |

yea.. i'm going to the guitar store in Greenville here in a few.. I haven't had a chance to get by Harry's or Guitar Center yet. I can't decide whether I would rather get a relatively nice acoustic or finally get rid of this damned GNX4 and get some nice analog pedals/decent tube amp. The GNX4 is nice at doing what it does but sound wise it's just too fake sounding (obviously).
Ah well.. guess I'll go play with some things at the store and see what I end up with 12/27/2008 12:17:13 PM |

i went to guru guitars to check out a '60s silvertone they have, and ended up buying an amp that's made from an old motorola hi-fi amplifier
it looks like just a stereo head with three huge gold knobs and a cloth front, but there's a 6" speaker inside that sounds like a fender champ, and then it has an output for an 8 ohm cab that makes it sound fucking huge, despite only being 4 watts from one el84
this is the third time i've gone to a shop to check out a weird guitar and come home with a sub-15 watt tube amp instead
the thing is basically what the valve junior combo should sound like (a touch less gain than the VJ)...it's not buzzy at all in combo configuration and when piggybacked it's heaven ] 12/27/2008 2:09:26 PM |

ended up picking up a Martin DCX1E yesterday after dude a few posts up got me interested..
Definitely play all of them they have.. there were a few other Martin's in the same price range (within $100) ...play those too. I tried to just look at the price tags (so I didn't get sucked into a $2000+ guitar ) and not the model and just went down the line and played them all. The one I liked best playing wise was one of the DCX1E's. I played two or three of that model and they are NOT all the same, at all..the other ones were not good playing guitars at all. It is not the prettiest by any means in my opinion but damn it plays/sounds good.
It's almost like an unfinished higher end Martin (except for the cheaper wood on the back). It has a very low gloss finish.. nothing like the really thick shiny clear you see on most acoustics. There were a couple of other little things I noticed that weren't as "perfect" i guess you would say compared to the more expensive ones but none of them matter as far as playability and sound. I'll try to post some pics later of what I mean for anyone who is interested.
Also, got a nice case with built in hydrometer and a humidifier since my place is dry as hell in the winter.. like under 20% humidity usually.

Vinyl, what position were the P-rails that you used? bridge, neck, middle, all? Since I spent my allotted money for a "rock" guitar for a pedal setup I decided I am going to hook up an old Ibanez that I used to use for CTA but has since been gutted and sitting around. Besides looking like an 80s metal guitar, I think it would have a good thick rock sound with something like a P90...but the humbucker option sounds nice and I need the pickups to be humbucker sized anyways since I have 2 humbucker sized holes in the guitar heh. 1/5/2009 10:40:50 AM |

^^ It was a custom guitar that had neck & bridge and also a three-way toggle that gave you P-90s, single coils, or humbuckers. Singles were a little fat, but humbuckers were nice (for humbuckers) and the P-90s were spot on. 1/5/2009 1:44:18 PM |

^^ Ah yea, I guess I would need an extra 3-way switch installed to make them work right. I just have one 3 way toggle for my neck, n+b, bridge on the guitar I had in mind. 1/6/2009 10:01:58 AM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
You can wire them with just a three-way, but you have to choose which configuration you want each pickup in, which defeats the purpose. The model I saw had a regular toggle and then a mini-toggle for the P-90/single/HB selection, and that switch only took up about 1 square centimeter footprint-wise...wouldn't be hard to drill and install when you got the pickup(s) put in. 1/6/2009 12:09:06 PM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
right. shouldnt be hard...I suppose I could also always install the bridge pickup and use my current 3way selector to switch between the 3 pup sounds 1/6/2009 12:18:23 PM |

I've been playing about 4 months now and know a few songs
I'm thinking about getting a Peavy Vypyr 30 watt - I've heard its way better than the Line 6 Spider and has tons of built in effects
or maybe I should steadily buy up nice effect pedals and save up for a marshall
i can't decide, i guess i could just go ahead and get the Vypyr its only about $200 1/6/2009 3:20:54 PM |

what kind of music are you looking to play with the marshall? 1/6/2009 3:23:09 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
I'd suggest buying a decent small tube amp and then a cheap multi-effect if you're just getting effects to diddle around with them. Most amps built-in effects aren't much better than a cheap multi-pedal and you'll be much happier with the naked amp sound if you put more money there. 1/6/2009 3:24:54 PM |

ok ok ok yea i guess i'll just wait and get cream of the crop stuff steadily - i do have a job
its not like i know what i'm doing but I do know I need a delay pedal, been looking at the Boss one
everything i play will be in the realm of pop rock and hard rock - I just keep reading about how great Marshall tube amps are everywhere i go

and they are good...but my bet is that if you talk to a lot of us on here you will hear us say that a lot of them are generic and boring but they get the job done. My bet however is that you would probably be pretty happy with them since you won't be as picky.
As far as delay goes, if you arent on the road and banging stuff around a lot, I have found the Behringer delay pedal to sound just as good as the boss DD-3 when I got one as a temporary replacement last year. I still use it for stuff. The only difference is that the casing is plastic instead of the metal. My guess is that you could save yourself a lot of money picking up one of them over the Boss unless anyone in here had any bad experiences to chime in with. 1/6/2009 3:44:33 PM |
