I mean if you really want to be a fanatik about it...and say its a bunch of PS3/blu ray owners voting. Reason is because they are unsatisfied with blu ray

obviously.

you see that's funny. Because I clearly stated that's NOT what I was doing. You made that leap on your own, bud.

I find you'll eventually pwn yourself if left to your own devices, so that's what I've been doing lately.

so once again, you're the only one acting like a fanatic.

^that makes no sense. You just said:

Quote :
"Data Point: I voted for the HD-DVD player because I already own a Blu-Ray player."

and when I responded with that being a tiny percentage you acted like the prick you are. So you see, I can make dumbass assumptions just like you and use your words against you.

I never claimed to have one or tried to bring up some bogus "percentage". I simply stated that even though I own + prefer Blu-Ray, I voted for HD-DVD.

It's a shame I didn't get picked for the HD-DVD deal on Amazon on any of my accounts. I'm convinced no one is actually getting "randomly selected to get the deal".

the 40gig ps3 does kind of suck.

but other reasons why I like the ps3 include:

1) no need to buy games - just play demos
2) fun mini-games available to buy
3) plays blu-ray
4) ps2 games (sorry you can't have this reason)

it's cute when you two argue.

PIRATES 3 NEXT TUESDAY!

i've been thinking... best thing to do right now is to get one player, and convince a friend that the other player is better, and have him get that. that way you can get him any exclusive titles for that side for christmas and watch them at his place, while seeing all of the exclusive titles for your player on your own system.

^^umm what?

if you are going to buy a console just to play 'demos' then don't waste your money
if you want to play PS2 games, buy a PS2 and save yourself money.
if you want to play 'arcade' type games then buy a Xbox360.

I like playing demos. I rarely ever finish playing a full game anyway, because I get bored with it.

I didn't even buy a game for my ps3 until two weeks after I'd bought the system. I just played demos only. I did eventually buy Assassin's Creed, but that's still the only game I've bought and will probably remain the only one until MGS4 comes out. Yet, I have been playing my PS3 non-stop! I've played the Stranglehold demo like 6 times now - getting pretty damn good at it

Its not a waste of money to me.

I know what you mean Solinari. I bought an HD DVD attachment for my xbox 360 because I LOVE watching trailors. Never really watched a movie on it, don't have the attention span for it. But i've watched the HD trailor for Transformers like 6 times now! It gets better each time. Although the only HD DVD I have bought is Planet Earth but it will remain my only HD DVD until Planet Mars comes out.

i guess it would be boot time. it takes about 15 seconds for the unit to power up and open the disc tray. from there it's perfect. that's really the only negative i have about that particular player.

HD DVD Surpasses 750,000 Dedicated Players

http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/11-27-2007/0004711631&EDATE=

When compared to PS3 sales stateside 2.1 million as of November 8th, it looks like the player divide is wider than the media sales would show. However, using philihp's numbers from a page ago (or rather three months ago), this makes the attachment rate for HD DVD 2:1, whereas Blu-ray compatible is sitting around 1:1, getting worse when you consider that they've also sold standalone players as well.

What will be really interesting is when someone tabulates total sales of HD disc media now that both players have had some time where they've sold well.

I never really liked the idea of an "attachment rate". First, because it's so difficult to determine what a player is, and what isn't... and second, because it doesn't tell very much. It says how large your average persons' movie library is, and how angry they will be if their format doesn't become the de facto standard.

According to the NPD group (Warning: unbiased figures ahead... take this however you like), only 40% of PS3 owners are aware the machine plays Blu-ray movies, and half of those don't use it to play movies.

Their percentages are meaningless. They took a more than likely small percentage of a small sample size. What would be more interesting is actual numbers rather than meaningless percentages displayed just to get headlines.

attachment rate is one of the most important if not THE most important thing to look at. Attachment rates is where the money is made. You can sell 100 blu ray players and 1:1 movies attachment rate.

or 50 hd dvd players and 2(movies):1(player) attachment rate.

who made more money?

keep in mind that the hardware is almost always sold at a loss. (especially if you want to include PS3's)

I love all this waffling about the PS3s significance. Look, you can't have your cake and eat it to. You can't include the PS3 in your attachment rate figures, and then disregard the fact that it's put more Blu-ray players in homes than Toshiba will manage for the next 2 years. PS3 sales are picking up in a big way and more and more people will have them attached to HDTVs after this holiday season. As awareness for HD media picks up, Blu-ray will benefit since it already has an install base in the millions.

IMO, HD DVD is running out of time. It's only advantage is price. All Transformers did was show how stupid a studio would have to be to go HD DVD exclusive at this point. Players sales, movie giveaways, Wal-Mart shenanigans have done nothing except keep HD DVD from being crushed. It hasn't made up any ground. Blu-ray players will eventually reach a mass market price point, and if HD DVD hasn't closed the gap by then, you can say bye bye to the format.

The real interesting thing to watch will be who makes the next move. If things stay as they are, Blu-ray will win hands down. The onus is on HD DVD to do something to help achieve parity. Otherwise, Blu-ray will be in a position to deliver the killing blow.

you are right, considering Toshiba doesn't make blu ray players.

whats funny is here you are jumping to conclusions as you probably would have done back in the day with betamax. And when things don't go your way, you'll be left with a Sony hanky to dry those tears.

The fact remains. PS3 is a console before its a movie player. The mass market will always view consoles as such. This is step 1 of trying to make consoles your one stop for all your media needs. The mass market will not be converted over night. Microsoft and Sony were trying to achieve this with their latest consoles. Both want to take over your living room. But like I said...this is still 'new' and the mass market will not adopt something like this for some time.

Actually I now think that both formats will exist in the US till they are eclipsed by the next gen.

All the PS3's sold isn't putting a dent in DVD sales.

There are no parallels to Betamax here though. I suggest you take a history lesson. Betamax did not have the studio support Blu-ray does. Betamax did not have the CE support Blu-ray does. Betamax did not have the technical advantages Blu-ray does. Betamax lost because it was easier to release a 3 hour movie on VHS. That isn't the case with Blu-ray. You people are so fixated on "LOL, it's another doomed Sony format", you are completely ignoring the actual realities of the situation.

you want actual realties? PS3 is NOT a movie player. It is a console. People don't buy 'PCs' to hook up to their big screen TV's to watch a movie.

Sony can try and catch up to Microsoft in console sales all they want, fact remains the people buying it (excluding us tech geeks) are buying it to play games.

you certainly have your head in the sand.

^If the PS3 is not a movie player, than stop counting in your attachment rate figures. In that case, Blu-ray is somewhere around 5:1 while HD DVD is 2:1. Like I said:

Quote :
"you can't have your cake and eat it to."

You're in idiot if you're ignoring the PS3's effect. It's the reason Warner went from being HD DVD exclusive to neutral, and they certainly know more than you. Granted, that's not saying much because you don't know anything about this subject. as you've proven time, and time, and time again.

That's true, but it's also a movie player, and if the ps3 owners even buy just 1 movie, it helps blu ray a lot.

And I would bet the majority of PS3 owners have bought or will buy 1 movie, esp. once they see how the 5 free movies they can get with it look.
