I am pulling for Herb...i've found myself rooting for them this year and hope they put together a good tournament. whatever you thought about his performance at here you have to admit it's nothing short of amazing what he's done with ASU in such a short time. that program was in shambles 3/14/2009 4:00:19 PM |

Why? Our fanbase ran off a great coach because he thought getting to the NCAA tournament and being a top 50 team year in and year out was more important than beating UNC and Duke. Honestly, we deserve to rule the shittier, Herb was a great coach and a good guy and we did him wrong. (Hmmm, reminds me of another coach we had... ) 3/14/2009 4:19:00 PM |

give it a rest...if he isnt fucking man enough to deal with fans talking shit, he damn sure isnt man enough to ever be able to get us to a point to compete with unc or duke, or go much farther than the 1st weekend in the ncaa tourney...get over sendek, he's gone, he left because he couldnt take the heat of coaching at a program with history and expectations...tough shit for him 3/14/2009 4:28:13 PM |

Herb is a better than average coach who, if he were still in the ACC, would probably be the 5th best coach in the league, behind K, the Williams boys and Purnell (big drop off from G. Williams to Purnell).
If they lose today I'll simply think the man is cursed. There is no reason for them not to win today. Still, I don't see them going very far in the NCAAs, but that's par for the course. 3/14/2009 4:35:42 PM |

Gary Williams also has a national title and ACC championship on his resume. How can you rank a coach higher than him when Herb's greatest accomplishment was reaching the Sweet 16? 3/14/2009 4:41:05 PM |

i supported herb 100% when he was here, but he has a big boy job and gets big boy money for it, oh so some fans are being rude, oh no lets pack up and move across country...he had plateaued with what he could do for our program
^and in those 5 years, our record was 6-5 in the tourney
whoopty do
or was it 5-5?

Purnell? He's never even won ONE tournament game in 20 seasons of being a head coach at the D-1 level... Are you kidding me?
And yes Herb would be, at best, the 4th best coach in the ACC... when you think that Hall of Famers like Jim Boeheim would probably be 3rd that is probably not exactly an insult.
Rick Barnes would be 3rd. John Calipari would be 3rd. Tom Izzo would be 3rd. See my point?
^ gonna need to wait until 2 years from now to really judge. Next year is going to be rebuilding. We could be as good as we were this year but expecting anything more than that is pretty unrealistic...

Winning at Clemson is no small feat. Even Barnes didn't have that much success there, but you have to admire the effort Clemson gives on the court, even if I hate them. I would take Purnell and his style any day over Herb. 3/14/2009 5:01:53 PM |

I think the 'Herb hit his max' argument is pretty stupid. He may have had a bad last year, but overall his last 5 years, the program showed remarkable improvement. If he had another five years we'd probably be a very respected program and a perennial S16 / E8 contender. We get lucky in any of those, and we win it all.
No, he's not a Roy Williams or Coach K and he knew he wasn't either. Maybe that was his problem in that he didn't focus on those games or programs, which he probably knew he couldn't consistently win, and instead focused on the big picture. State fans are simple folk, and Herb was too complicated on and off the court. A red coat and prior history get us pumped, but talking about 'daylight compartments' or whatever the hell makes is wonder about a person's sanity.
Regardless, we've been absolute shit every year Sid has coached and we've hit rock bottom in the last two. Would I take a Top 4 ACC finish and NCAA Tournament over the shit we have right now? Absolutely. 3/14/2009 6:00:28 PM |
