Thanks, I was just wondering if maybe there was something I was overlooking on the Pro/Ultimate versions.

Most, if not all, of the programs I use already work with Vista. I'm assuming compatibility will only get better with 7.

I'm sure the majority of you guys already know this, but I was getting so frustrated with my windows "randomly" moving to my extended desktop (wall mounted Vizio that I only use for MediaPortal) and it looks like Shift + Window Key + Left or Right will throw the active window on either monitor you want.

Looks like the RC may have some issues with ClearQAM mappings. Upgraded from build 7000 and now everything is fubar.

Yea, after a few days I still haven't been able to get the Windows 7 MCE working with QAM again properly. The Windows 7 box I have in the living room is working fine but I have not rescanned for channels (and don't plan to). I've had this issue previously where TWC would remap channels but the MCE Guide would force the channel to exist on the incorrect version. I'm about to just give up and hook up a Xbox 360 in there and extend the living room connection.

MediaPortal?

Anyone running an RC build between 7201 and 7260?

RC build was 7100, that's the build.

7201-7260 are interim builds and not intended to be used as a stable version.

i use windows 7 media center

^semantics.

Anyway, is anyone running 7201 - 7260? Apparently I need a couple of files to hax 7600 and don't feel like trolling rapidshare for what may or may not suit me.

Anyone know of a way to copy the configuration from one Windows 7 Media Center install to another? I just hooked my cable directly to my TV and all of my HD works fine where I can't get the shit to work through MCE on a build higher than 7000 worth a damn.

I know Vista had an ATSCSettings.xml but everything appears to be stored differently in Windows 7.

^^ No, because:

Quote :
"7201-7260 are interim builds and not intended to be used as a stable version"

Seriously, these builds aren't released at all, not just to the public. No one runs them outside of the test labs, because they aren't release builds. Especially from RC to RTM, it's just a waste of time. Unsupported, driver signing mismatches, unknown stability, no forward upgrades, and unless you have an extremely specific problem being fixed by a daily build like these, there is absolutely no reason to use them. Which I know you don't because you aren't a partner. Use a public build.

^

Best advice I can give is to remove WMC via control panel, reboot and reinstall it. I've had some strange stuff like that happen in the Beta and RC too.

anyone managed to get it on to a samba domain properly?

i'm running the latest stable build of samba and I've tried all the advice posted on the samba.org lists

i can get it to add the machine to the domain and open network shares, but i can't get it to add a domain user or login as a domain user; any time i try it says 'the trust relationship' has broken down

if i can get that sorted by august 6th, i'll definitely upgrade my main PC to it

^^^ There was never any during the whistler/millennium betaboy phases when I installed every other leaked interim build either.

Besides, we're talking about 7600.16385 which I'm sure is more than stable, but I guess I'll wait for MSDN and whether or not an emulated bootstrap vlk img pops up.

Just a heads up to everyone that ultramon now supports Windows 7 and does a pretty good job with it. Some of the menus are still the old school style but the taskbar at least looks right and you can read the text on it now. for a while on mine it was impossible to read the text so i couldnt tell which file was which when i had a bunch of shit open.

so, yeah, it works pretty well at this point. that other program i tried worked better when it worked--except it did crazy shit like maxing out the processor for 30 seconds at a time completely randomly which drove me nuts.

As soon as the RTM is released to Technet I'll be signing back up. Windows 7 is the best OS Microsoft has released yet. I've never been a huge fan of Windows but damn if I don't have a semi for this release.

It's only 9 days away now, I think I'm going to build a new budget gaming box for it, based loosely on this guide: http://arstechnica.com/hardware/news/2009/07/gaming-guide.ars

I'm going w/ mostly budget components, except a core i7 mobo+cpu, a 1900x1200 monitor and 6 GB of DDR3 running on 7 64-bit.

From a marketing blurb on the TechNet site:

Quote :
"A TechNet Plus subscription includes premium resources to help you evaluate Microsoft technologies, plan deployments and support your current IT environment."

I assume once the later OS's are activated, they don't magically become unactivated a year later if you decide not to renew, correct?

I see two technet binders around the office from like 2006, but we haven't renewed the subscription. I don't want to pay out of pocket for it, but I mean 261 bucks isn't bad at all for those perks. My coworker paid 100 for Win7 Pro, I should have just went in on a sub with him.

Correct, the activations are good forever. Really the caveat is that you are not supposed to use the software in a "production" environment, ie, supposed to be for testing purposes only.

I think the way to get around that for yourself is to just claim that you are always testing the bleeding edge software on your personal work machine.

And I can't find where, but I think it technically might be limited to one user/license, but I again, I can't find where I saw that before, so I dunno ...

One thing of course, I wouldn't go around using the TechNet license for Exchange Server/etc to run business critical stuff, that might induce heavy fines if found out

Anybody know how long those discount codes stay good? Any chance of them invalidating them before the Windows7 technet release? This would be a really good deal for me because I wanted to buy at least two copies of OneNote to test at home and at work. I also pre-ordered Windows7 Pro from amazon for testing when it comes out, so I could cancel that and not order OneNote and save money with the coupon code.

One obvious question though: When your subscription lapses are you still able to activate software you downloaded? Say if somebody's subscription lapsed and they tried to re-install Windows... That would be a pretty big hang-up, because I'm not sure this is something somebody would want to renew every year.

[Edited on July 30, 2009 at 1:38 PM. Reason : more specifically, what does "the activations are good forever" mean?]

With Technet you can activate the software after your subscription ends if you haven't reached the 10 activations. When the subscription ends you will no longer be able to access downloads or keys but if you have them saved off you are good to go. The software is never "unactivated" and remains working just fine.

is anyone else tired of the following explorer bugs ("rtm" 7600.16385 and all previous 6 builds i've used)

1) randomly a folder will stop allowing you to drag/drop and copy/paste. you have to close the folder and re-open it to get that functionality back.

2) when you have 2 columns of files, and the 2nd column goes a little bit past the right edge of the window (i.e. a bottom scroll bar is present), if you double-click or right click on a file in the right-most column, it will scroll over automatically... however, your right click menu will be way right of the file now, or your double click won't get recognized b/c the 2nd click is actually where there are no files (since it scrolled).

3) there is 1 pixel in between each file vertically. when selecting a ton of files and trying to drag them, it's very easy to accidentally click on that pixel and lose your selection.

4) the fucking ETA on file copy/move is still like vista - wayyyy off. it will show 19 hours sometimes when it's clearly going 50MB/sec and there's only a couple gigs left.

^I've never experienced #1 or heard of that from anyone else. You sure you don't have any apps installed that wonk with the clipboard?

#2 that's probably the only explorer view I don't use, it hasn't been particularly good on any system (one of my biggest pet peeves about Finder on the Mac, it has the EXACT same set of usability issues).

#3 yeah this sucks, I use the details view for doing that kind of thing, because it has the big white safety area to the right. Although I have to say, it's not easy at all to click that one pixel space... and that has been exactly the same for a long time (pretty sure that goes back to at least XP)

#4 agreed, im just glad they actually show you the disk speed now. at least i know how fast things are moving, even without the damn time remaining being anywhere near correct.

1) only thing i could think of is VNC... again, didn't happen in Vista/Xp though.

2) yeah, it's list view, and it's annoying. guess i'll keep it on details (even though i LOVE how each column in list view can be its own width now, not a set width for all columns. helps if you have ONE long filename and tons of short ones in a directory.

3) i do it about 1/10 times. sometimes it's when ctrl+selecting a ton of files. makes me want to throw things. doesn't do it in vista/xp for me.

4) yeah, the remaining GB's are accurate and if i see a high inaccurate time, i can at least look at the remaining size go lower and know it's going faster than what it says.

^if you are continually managing tons of files like that in Explorer, there are probably better ways to manage them than using the basic selection options. Libraries are a godsend for me, and between that and search I don't do nearly the data movement I used to.

at least search works in 7. in vista, i'd search for something in the same folder i was in and it wouldn't come up. indexing off or not. it was pretty blatantly broken for me on almost all occasions.

oh another thing that BLOWS... you can't right click an open program on the task bar anymore and hit 'c' to close. you have to actually hit the close menu item.

and i think i like the basic theme when you have multiple folders open... it lists them top to bottom as a list without previews. i can't seem to find a way to enable that when using aero...

The one thing that annoys the crap out of me is that the start menu search doesn't look through internet history. Im used to going start -> run type url and use auto complete. Its kinda dumb cause it definitely indexes internet history and the search works fine from the address bar in IE.
