Is it just me or was there like 15 minutes of walking dead and 75 minutes of tv? Especially at the end. I don't recall the first season being like that.

^^^ yeah, looked liked he was hosed unless someone really knew how to fix that up. I figured he'd die with the way he was bleeding Not to mention, that was one hell of a gash to get just grazing a car door.

Why are all of these cars broke down and in need of repair? They can't even start them to move them off the road? Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty confident the gas their siphoning would go bad well before the cars would need work under the hood in order to start up.

There were quite a few, long commercial breaks. But that's to be expected with a premiere or finale, it shouldn't be as bad moving forward. Plus, the typical hr long tv show is only like 45 minutes, i'ts like 20 for a 30min show. So if we got about 65 minutes of actual show, that's par. Maybe throw in an extra break or so for the premier. --- Wikipedia has the run time for this episode at 66 minutes.

I'm just glad Rick didn't keep up the way he was talking in the opening monologue... that was horrible. "scien... Tist"

I hate when they end things on cliff hangers like that though. I find it too gimmicky.

^ yep! maybe whoever works on/saves the boy can fix up the black guy's arm properly (I'd be REALLY surprised if they killed the kid off -- although, his age presents a problem for the show).

to add to your point about the cars...why did they choose the most inefficient vehicles? there are fuel efficient sedans all over the place, and i'm sure they would have come across a newer model RV with all of the highway pileups they've come across.

it's like a bunch of hipsters survived a zombie outbreak, and decided to drive these cars because they're 'rad'

I want that boy to DIE HORRIBLY FROM HIS WOUND.

I hate his guts. Shut the fuck up already. Why does every major show have to have a brat that's striving for the attention of some parental figures yada yada. Terra Nova's kid is just as much a fatal flaw. I just want them to get shot so badly.

Episode had terrible pacing. The Church scene was too long for too little. And god I wanted to strangle Rick during his Jesus monologue, so cliched. Not as bad as the woman who lost her daughter though, she was just getting annoying.

In fact there's kind of a high density of annoying characters right now. I'm sure someone will die soon.

^^^ I think they choose the older vehicles on purpose because it's easier to work on a carbureted, non-computer controlled car. Though the argument could be made that they could find a new vehicle at pretty much any time if they needed to.

THOUGHTS:

The series as a whole has had pretty miserable pacing, but S02E01 was a pretty good episode.

Although, apparently the herd zombies lost their sense of smell. They were pretty insanely close to the survivors to not smell them under the rules previously established. They wouldn't have to be bloodhounds to smell alive flesh six feet away.

I don't really have a problem with Carl. He hasn't had enough screen-time to qualify as annoying, for me. He's not super whiny. The blade arsenal discovery scene in the truck admittedly had me pretty on edge.

Darryl is fucking great and is easily my favorite character. He is pretty relentlessly badass which might make him appear sort of flat, but he has actually developed a good amount. He has gone from being angry at everything because of Merle's abandonment to saving T-Bone. He's a legitimately good person like Rick; maybe even more-so.

S02E01 redeemed the shitty last few episodes of season 1, imo. Pending what happens next.

Patton Oswalt says S02E02 is "Awesome," but that was on AMC's Walking Dead talk show, so we'll see.

The end.

I'm reading positive feedback in a lot of places but I don't see how this episode was much different from last season - very little plot to keep me interested, especially for an hour and half premiere, and a lot of unlikable characters (except for Darryl, I agree that he's easily the best character)

I'll keep watching but mostly to try to see what you people are seeing in the show.

I can see this show is going to be like True Blood.

Vaguely (barely) following the book but throwing in a scene or character when it is convenient.

I haven't seen the show, I don't have cable, but one question:

How long have the cars been sitting there? If it's been a few months maybe most of them won't start because their batteries have died from sitting idle too long. Now if they reach in and fix something mechanical every time then it's obviously not that.

I kinda feel like the old guy is too sane/logical to survive. I feel like he's inevitably doomed. But that annoying blond girl will survive. She just wouldn't shut up the whole time. I hope she leaves and we don't hear from her again. She was throwing such a huge fit that the dude wouldn't give her the gun back but he makes a very valid point. If her gun had been assembled, she would have shot that one zombie and every other zombie within a mile radius would have heard it and descended upon them. She's too annoying to just listen to logic.

And the kids. My god. First of all in a zombie infested apocalypse, you'd think they would have just had them stay in the RV the whole time. Or at least up top with the old dude. The kids don't even listen. I know they are kids and their minds wander but for fucks sake if you are running through the woods with zombies chasing you and the only guy that can save you says "Stay here and don't move. I'll come back" why would you just get up and run away 5 seconds later?

i wonder if Daryl's brother will come back. last season they insinuated that he was eaten alive, but there was never closure. i'm a little fuzzy on it, but didn't a scene end last season with the handcuffs dangling from the pipe he was attached to?

i dont believe they ever insinuated he was eaten. he had cut off his hand with a hacksaw to get free of the handcuffs keeping him there. what they did hint at was that Merle took the construction van/truck the 4 of them used to go back into downtown to rescue him. after that, he wasn't really mentioned again.

Right? Plus I could have sworn that they smelled the black guys blood when he was bleeding. Maybe I was mistaken, but if so... they should have been all over him (they literally stepped over him).

That's actually pretty rational. Unfortunately, they literally seem to be in there fixing mechanical stuff. Plus, it seemed that a lot of the cars were abandoned... and you'd think people would turn them off (out of habit if nothing else). So I'll chalk 45% up to dead batteries (being very generous)... and the rest to "dumb writing."

fwiw, he actually told her to run back to the highway once he got the zombies away from her.

All the nitpicking aside, I actually enjoyed the first episode. And I thought the pacing and what not was good. Like the original pilot, Frank Darabont wrote this episode. He was fired before things really got going into season 2 though. So.... who knows what to expect moving forward. The reviews say episode 2 is just as good if not better than this episode though.

coworker turned me onto this show. i caught up with the marathon yesterday and saw the premiere. the makeup is kind of epic and it reminds me of all the made for syfy movies that i do admittedly love.

though i find myself not actually liking any of the characters. i like the show as a whole but i usually have a fav character in shows i watch and its just not there in this show. In fact I just want to punch most of them in the face for being obnoxious.

we'll see if i can stay committed

So, why were cars overturned, but they're perfectly overturned, and still lined up in the lanes?

I know it's nitpicking but it's easily fixable and was kind of annoying.

so much potential I had hoped for... 2nd season started just like the first. slow and lame. At least the makeup is good and zombies seem believable. I like how they mistook real bells for a PA speaker bell... Seriously...?

I was entertained. Sure I could nitpick about black-guy blood and the pile-up thing (though if anyone has ever read "The Stand" there are similar pile-ups all over the places), but for the most part I like where they're picking up.

Looks like we'll be getting a couple new characters judging by the previews. Should be interesting to see how long this split group will last.

yeah, the truck was gone, then they found it again near the campsite, maybe he drove slow and lead a group to the camp, that was my impression

i think you are mistaken regarding the van and Merle. he nor the van ever showed up again after he cut his hand off and escaped the rooftop. i remember we discussed in this thread a theory of Merle leading a group of zombies to the campsite as revenge but there was never any real proof or indication of that.

The cold open was painfully awful. The women in this show are obnoxious and weak. Hard to care about them at all when they can't stop falling all over themselves and being helpless. Rick's wife is acting tough to compensate for banging his best friend, the blonde chick is a pouty bitch and Sinead O'Conner is absolutely useless and her daughter is a retard.
