The one thing I don't like is that the WCSD deputies will not state that they are working on behalf of the University, or their affiliation thereof, and yet request documents which are issued by and are property of the University (student ID). Driver's license would be fair game, but they want proof of affiliation with the University. Isn't this a publicly funded University by the State of North Carolina being paid funds from the treasury which are collected from the tax paying citizens?

I think the appropriate response would have been a little more low-key than it is.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

^^So it's acceptable to profile a minority group that may or may not exercise their first ammendment right to assemble peacefully on a land grant university based on a facebook post? Tonight was just a waste of law enforcement resources.

Just saw on someone's FB status that 12 students received citations for license plate covers with the North Carolina covered up by the frame pursuant to the new statute....

a peaceful assembly would have had the proper security to ensure that all persons and properties were safe, not a ragtag group of drunken idiots gathering for no real purpose other than to "take over raleigh" as they put it

a waste of resources made necessary by the thousands of people who said they were going on facebook. there are ways provided to students to facilitate assembly. permits and such allow for planning before the event. the creators of the group chose not to go that route.

Do a thousand people have the right to walk down a major street, blocking off roads used by ambulances, firetrucks and police cars responding to emergencies? That's what happened last time. Luckily there were no serious incidents caused by that. Permits allow people to make arrangements to accommodate more people, changes in traffic patterns or whatever they may need to do and not just for safety, I'm only using that as an example.

Looks like a public street to me.

A thousand people have the right to do whatever they want, because there's a thousand of them. Democracy = mob rule of the majority. Why do you hate america?

So the real riot is tomorrow night, right?

Fun fact: The Kent state massacre and the nation wide college paralysis that took place in the weeks afterward resulted in no criminal charges against the murderers, nor an end to Vietnam. But it did result in colleges ending their semesters earlier to prevent the shenanigans that come with the summer heat.

They track telephones, no warrants required. The cell phone companies have nifty little websites for them. They type in your number and your current position pops up on a map.

"RALEIGH, N.C. — A planned flash mob didn't happen at North Carolina State University as university and Raleigh police set up a checkpoint Friday night.

The flash mob was expected to gather at the school’s Bell Tower. Officers found out about the planned event through Internet chatrooms.

Only a handful of students showed up for the event, campus police said.

Along with the checkpoint, officers also patrolled the Bell Tower and checked student identifications Friday night."

I hacked it, remember?

Also, wlfpackgrl: How many variations of "Wolfpack girl" did you have to try before you finally hit one that wasn't already registered? And how many more attempts would you have made if "wlfpackgrl" had been taken? Just how much are you willing to mangle the words to preserve that core concept?
