Red Bull and vodka is the way to go if you want to have that energy drink/alcohol mix, I'm telling you. Four Lokos are cheap, and they'll get you fucked up, but the morning after drinking them I feel like I was out of control the night before, even if I wasn't. They just make me feel really weird in a not so great way.
Unless it's a Sunday, go to the liquor store, buy a $10 5th of vodka, go to the grocery store and buy a 4 pack of energy drink, and get to drinking. 10/17/2010 2:51:03 AM |

Investigators concluded that none of the students were drugged or given alcohol without their knowledge and no sexual assaults occurred, according to a school statement.
The findings convinced university President James Gaudino to ban "alcohol energy drinks" from his campus. (read more)" |

aww, you're cute...you think you have a clue! feel free to look up any of the complex words and concepts below...i'm betting you'll need to
metabolization of alcohol (a "downer") reduces the liver's ability to distribute glucose to the brain and so it makes you tired...caffeine (an "upper") as a stimulant inhibits the brain's adenosine (a nucleoside that acts as a sedative) receptors
until a certain point, you can quite easily tell that you're drunk by the level of fatigue that you feel as the alcohol takes effect...the caffeine counteracts this and significantly reduces your ability to gauge drunkenness...which in turn can lead to drinking too much ("dude, i don't FEEL drunk!")
i've never looked at a can of four loko, but i'm betting that they don't list how much caffeine is in a can (because they're not required by law to do so)...i'll bet that they've got at least 200mg (and likely closer to 300mg)...200mg (a large cup of coffee) is PLENTY to significantly block neuroreceptors
this is all independent of the fact that mixing them causes an increase in blood pressure and heart rate...oh, and both alcohol and caffeine have significant dehydrating effects
i'm not saying that alcohol or caffeine are bad, nor am i saying that this stuff is "bad," per se...i'm pointing out that mixing uppers and downers is stupid, as a general rule, because it eliminates your ability to judge...obviously enough alcohol will the same thing, but 2 cans of four loko can knock you the fuck out before you even have a chance to realize that you're toast in the first place...it's just a bad idea
of course the kids are responsible for their own actions

the Central Washington University event is a freaking media zoo here.
first off it was reported that these students that got hospitalized were young women and were victims of being spiked with date rape drugs.
then it comes out that it was just alcohol. seems Four Loko mixed with vodka and rum.
and these students (about 11 total out of 40-some at a party) got so hammered they had to be hospitalized for acute alcohol poisoning.
most of those hospitalized were young college girls who weren't old enough to legally drink. some had BAC as high as 0.35.
now the witchhunt has turned from would-be date rapers to Four Loko. the Governor and state Attorney General is determined to ban caffeinated alcohol drinks from the state. 10/26/2010 1:53:16 PM |

that's stupid. can they not make redbull and vodkas? it was probably not a good idea to mix a drink that already has 12% alcohol with more alcohol. if anything, it's whoever threw the party's fault, not any drink-maker.

^^^^It should be evident from my post that I get all that.
But your language, "combining uppers and downers," connotes something way more serious than drinking Four Lokos. Like I said, caffeine is barely an upper (it's a very mild stimulant). According to your logic, it's "just a dumb idea in general" to drink Irish coffee and have a piece of chocolate (OMG, it's an upper!) cake after dinner.
And, in some cases, alcohol can also act as a stimulant. So if you were to drink Irish coffee, eat a piece of chocolate cake, and smoke a cigarette afterwards, you could be consuming four sources of stimulants: whiskey, coffee, chocolate, and tobacco. And then if you have a rum and coke after your cigarette, the alcohol may act as a depressant and the caffeine as a stimulant again. So...in two drinks, a piece of cake, and a cigarette, we'd have:
depressants: rum stimulants: whiskey, chocolate, tobacco, coca-cola, coffee
Can you imagine what would happen if you had a second rum and coke or another Irish coffee after all of those drugs!?!?!? CALL 911--SOMEBODY'S BEEN COMBINING THEIR UPPERS AND DOWNERS!!!! WE SHOULDA LISTENED TO quagmire02!!!

Quote : | "It should be evident from my post that I get all that." |
exactly the opposite...it's obvious that you don't really understand how alcohol or caffeine works (or, rather, that you have a limited google-search understanding)...see below
Quote : | "But your language, "combining uppers and downers," connotes something way more serious than drinking Four Lokos." |
not at all...it connotes exactly what it says: "combining uppers and downers is just a dumb idea in general"...maybe if i put it a different way, you'll understand?
IN GENERAL, combining uppers and downers is a dumb idea because it inhibits one's ability to judge their intake more quickly than using one of the same independently of the other
Quote : | "Like I said, caffeine is barely an upper (it's a very mild stimulant)." |
of course it depends on what you're comparing it to (yeah, it's barely a stimulant compared to crack or meth or coke or ecstasy), but it's not "barely" an upper...a relatively low dose (200mg or what you would find in a large cup of coffee) has a measurable effect (jeebus, how many people "must" have their coffee in the morning?)...which is exactly the reason that they include in these drinks...are you really not getting that?
Quote : | "According to your logic, it's "just a dumb idea in general" to drink Irish coffee and have a piece of chocolate (OMG, it's an upper!) cake after dinner." |
hence the "in general" qualifier...i figured most people were smart enough to realize that my criticism of the combination of uppers and downers was to be kept in the context of this thread and in regards to significant levels of the relevant compounds (200-300mg of caffeine and 12% ABV), but i forgot that you sometimes post and i sometimes need to dumb it down
Quote : | "And, in some cases, alcohol can also act as a stimulant." |
this is how i know that your opinion is based on a half-assed understanding of alcohol interaction and not actual education...alcohol is NOT a stimulant in the technical sense of the word and its stimulating effects are extremely limited...the stimulating effects are temporary as they are quickly counteracted
alcohol interacts with the adrenal gland BEFORE being metabolized by the liver...alcohol stimulates the production of adrenaline which in turn actually increases the rate at which alcohol is absorbed (which is why mood can affect the rate of alcohol absorption)...sure, this release of adrenaline causes the liver to release sugar into the bloodstream giving you that initial high, but it is inevitable that once the alcohol is metabolized by the liver that the release of glucose will drop below normal
the increase of glucose in the brain provides the high, but once the glucose is used up and the brain starts to use the sugar in alcohol, the levels of compounds like choline and creatine (among others) are reduced (which in turn leads to loss of motor control and cognitive abilities in general)
this not an opinion, this is fact...alcohol is metabolized fairly evenly across the board and the level of glucose reduction as a result of metabolization by the liver is substantially higher than the level of glucose release as a result of adrenal gland stimulation...in short, it doesn't matter whether you have half a beer or four, the amount of "down" will far outweigh the "high"
let me go ahead and say that yes, alcohol and caffeine affect people differently, but it doesn't change the fact that outside of unique cases, they affect everyone the same (chemically)...feel free to read about it from people smarter than either of us, if you want: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1608542610/27/2010 8:02:10 AM |

the whole "these aren't safe!" argument is stupid...it's not UNSAFE unless you're stupid about it...which these kids were...it's another case of blaming the company for misuse of the product
that said, i stand by my assertion that mixing the two compounds is asking for trouble...i generally use my internal "how drunk am i" meter to judge how much i can handle safely and for the most part it works really well...intentionally taking away my ability to interpret my level of impairment is just stupid 10/27/2010 9:32:32 AM |
