I use some Nike over-the-head headphones

[Edited on February 2, 2011 at 11:48 PM. Reason : only issue is a little irratation/chafing on the ears if I run for a really long time]

Ive always had great luck with the:
http://www.amazon.com/Zune-JDA-00001-Premium-Headphones-v2/dp/B000VWOL3O
which are the premium headphones that used to come with older Zunes. They dont tangle really (cloth cord) and sit in your ear so amazingly well. I've bought 3-4 pairs over the years and still love them. Sounds beats anything under 50 bucks IMO.

The reviews mention you can hear the cables, that's only if they move over something rough, it's never noticed in workout clothes or regular attire.

I use earbuds but I hate running so I elliptical it. Big difference I'd say.

What kind of supplements do you guys take?

I feel like an old person, I know I don't need to take some of this stuff but I feel it helps.

I take a multivitamin twice a day
Fish oil
Acai chew
Protein powder once a day
And this weight loss supplement I'm trying that I got for free lol

Here is a question for you guys -- I get absolutely destroyed when I do legs for a few days after. A lot of you have met me and I'm not a big guy, but I push myself, especially with squats. I do approaching 2x my body weight and my lower/core is pretty strong for someone my size so I'm not worried about continuing to build strength there.

I'm thinking about nixing the actual squats in the power rack and just doing a long set of jump squats that will fit in nicely with my regular weight leg training and transition in to my new cardio routine.

Bad idea? Good idea? I'm completely ignorant to most body weight exercises but I figure this will at least allow me to walk and maybe even play tennis/basketball the days after my leg workouts.

^ what are the actual benefits of fish oil? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but shit seems way too expensive for the benefits I can see...

^I'm that way when I start working out my legs again after a long absence. After about a month my legs have gotten stronger and use to it and I'm only sore for about a day (well maybe for a little longer, but I can actually do stuff the day after).

Fish oil is something I would NOT skip out on. It has sooooooooo many benefits for you. It lowers the risk of cancer, has great cardiovascular health benefits, and it's a great antioxidant. Good for the brain!

I just eat fish like a normal person. You only need the oils if you're not getting enough of them naturally. I'm 40 years old and I'm in the best shape of my life.

been gym training at least 5 days a week for the last 2.5 years and i make sure i have at least 4 large prepared meals per day. the number of supplements seems like a lot, but its not too bad.

I would love to be able to do this but I just don't understand how anyone has the time to. I know people always say if it's that important to you, you can make the time... but that simply isn't true. How on earth would I be able to take time off from a busy work day to have at least 2 large prepared meals during business hours (since they have to be spaced apart).

just whey protein. I'm still putting on muscle and I feel like supplements are only needed when you start to get to a maxima in strength building. At my level it's not necessary, but I do find the protein shakes are quite tasty, so i figure why not

Eat at your desk. Go out for Lunch #1 at 11 and then have leftovers or another prepared meal at 3. Unless you're in meetings all day every day, you can always spare 15 minutes do wolf that shit down.

i commute about a mile to work every day and the gym is only about 5 minutes from my house. that makes it easy to make time.

and its all about what you are passionate about too. im want to see a 300lb bench press and get my deadlift numbers higher.

i prepare my meals the night before. when i make dinner, i'll take some of what i made and put it in a tupperware container for lunch the next day. the same with my breakfast - i make my eggs the night before and then keep in the fridge overnight - heat them up the next morning before eating.

i know some people will plan their meals for the whole week - cook everything on sunday and store, which works but i rather just plan the night before. you have to find what works.

most (but not all) of the people using hardcore workout and eating routines can't sustain it for more than a year max. And then the people doing them backslide because they just get sick of it. I'd rather have a routine that is admittedly not as effective but also much less demanding and much more sustainable.

^^

im not a big fan of complex diets, cold immersion, intermittant fasting, or quick results.
i dont really eat at specific times either, just when im hungry. (and when im hungry, i prepare a meal.)

i eat big, time nutrients, lift simple, lift heavy, and get enough sleep.

i shoot for 1lb avg bodyweight changes per month, no bulking or cutting. just long term persistent gains. over the last 2.5 years, i have increased my weight from an average of 165lbs to 187lbs presently. i make good food choices, and generally eat whatever i want.

^yeah. Reading up on it makes it seem easy.

I'm pretty used to eating when I'm hungry. And I'm not trying to lose weight so eating frequently for metabolism does not apply.

I just like eating whenever and going to the gym a lot.

^^100% agreed.

i freaking love it. i study better and i feel more on top of my game than eating every couple of hours!
and once you get used to it, its second nature, i rarely get hungry before 1 pm anymore (im still having an issue sticking to it on the weekends though...which i think is the main reason for my stalling. but im getting there!)

but yeah. thank you packman for introducing me to intermittent fasting!

It's just how you're conditioned for the most part

I don't usually even get hungry until around the time my feeding window starts

I'm also not trying to lose weight, just maintain/slowly gain (focused more on increasing strength and conditioning)

I usually get really tired after lunch. Like, to the point where I might as well not even be there. I'm thinking I should try the lean gains approach.

Btw, I was only hating on the eating every 2-3 hours thing.

Not as much as I want (my wife doesn't like the concept of going to sleep even when we have to get up at 5; my dogs don't like the concept of me staying bed).

It's usually really bad when I eat out and eat way too much. But even when I eat clean, I feel like I'm slowed down somewhat.

I notice a lot of people feel sluggish after heavy grain consumption (breads, pasta, sometimes rice). Everyone responds differently, but grains are usually the culprit. If you're not eating that stuff, then it's probably sleep.

I just did some research on intermittent fasting. Interesting stuff. My concern is that I'm so used to eating something (like a homemade fruit smoothie) when I get up, I don't know if I could actually pull this off. I get very "omg I am going to die if I don't eat" hunger. And the. I have to remind myself I'm not going to die.

Women get a 10 hour feeding window on IF (due to hormonal issues)

The longer feeding/shorter fast generally makes it easier...again, it's all about how you're conditioned. IF just works better with my schedule and let's me get away with a little cheat here and there. Normal eating will work as well.

^ Do you still work at LFF? Can you make sure they get this damn message?

Quote :
"Dear Former Lifestyle Family Fitness Client,

I am writing you today wanting to ask you one question! Are you still in great shape? If you have, like most, fallen off track then my staff and I are here to help. We would like to offer you 1 free week of membership (so if you are not still a member this offer is perfect for you) as well as 2 free personal training sessions so that we might have the chance to earn your business back. So, will you give me the chance to do that? Well, I hope so. Call me today or as soon as you can so that we can set up an appointment to get the free membership pass set up, if needed, and your first workout. The offer is only good for the first 30 people, so act now because my staff of 6 can only handle so many.

I hope you take advantage of this offer knowing that you have ZERO to lose.

Sincerely,

*****************
Personal Training Manager of Cary, NC

"I don't know how to say this in a nice way, but please pay special attention to this message:

I moved to Birmingham, Alabama. I do not want my membership back. I have been gone since August and no matter how many times I ask to please be taken off whatever contact list LFF has, this company STILL CONTACTS ME. I was very happy with the gym and had to move for grad school. However, due to the amount of times I have been contacted (literally more than 5 times) I am becoming extremely frustrated with this company. I received a call last minute (from the Cary gym) and asked to PLEASE BE TAKEN OFF THE CONTACT LIST. Obviously this didn't happen.

Please take me off whatever contact list LFF has for former clients. I will not be joining again as I AM ALMOST NINE HOURS AWAY.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Samwise"

I'm in the first week of P90 and have basically just adjusted my eating to where I eat at a more regular schedule. Before, I would wake up and not necessarily eat anything until 9 or 10 at night some days, and then i would just eat a shitload because I was so hungry. Aside from that, i am just avoiding simple carbs. I am rarely hungry for long before I find SOMETHING to eat, and don't keep a specific schedule for meals seeing as how I don't really have the luxury of just eating at my desk whenever I feel like it, as I am a chef. Yes, I still laugh at the concept of working in a kitchen and not being able to eat, but the shit happens way more often than most people realize.

Monday I get to see my week 1 results. Hopefully this is working. I at least feel better which will be enough to keep me going for week 2.

Haha, I must be confusing my body with this new workout regimen. Not only am I sore (the good kind) but last night I sat in my bed watching basketball at like 8:30 and somehow fell asleep at 8:45 with the lights and TV on sitting upright. And only woke up for like 5 minutes the rest of the night until my alarm in the morning.

Anyway, one more day and then (a well deserved) two days off.

That special's actually every day of the week, not just M-T.

I saw my orthopedic doctor again on Tuesday and voiced my concerns to him about continual pain in my shoulder (in some ways it is worse now than it was before surgery). He assured me my shoulder is healing fine (my physical therapist agrees) and said that the pain I'm still feeling is from the micro-fractures he did during surgery. Apparently they can take an entire year to heal ( ). He gave me free reign to do any lifting exercises I want to, but said to not do anything if it hurt and limit most of the lifting to 50lbs max.

It's good to start getting back into it a bit but its incredibly frustrating that all the progress I made upper bodywise over 1 1/2 years is completely gone

It's really hard to buckle down to get rid of the last little bit. I'm down about a pound and a half since I decided it was finally time to get rid of my last few pounds at the start of last week. Not sure exactly how much I want to lose but will figure it out when I get there. I am very happy to have gotten rid of the carb-induced squishiness I was complaining about a couple weeks ago though.

I am easing back into running after not doing it much at all for a few months. My hips still get ridiculously sore, but I guess that is just my weak point.

My damn right knee hurts. It hurts if t stays bent or I walk down stairs or stand up for a seated position. I think I hurt doing lunges a couple days ago. Guess I'm gonna walk on the treadmill (walking doesn't hurt) and do upper body today then allow two days rest. Sucks, it hurts cause I'm fat but to lose the fat I need to use it!!

Think a knee brace would help? It feels like it's under the knee cap. Do they make em fOr fatties?

For the whole month of February I've decided to forgo all strength exercises and just concentrate on running. Just ready to lose these 5 lbs and be done with it. Also trying to eat right. I think I've gotten pretty good about drinking less, just doesn't appeal as much as it used to.
