Oh, well, if companies don't want to fairly compensate their workers, perhaps we should round up the CEOs and put them in cages so that we send a message to other companies that you can't avoid paying for training or basic conditions for their workers.6/20/2018 5:40:11 PM |

what do you think would happen if the US, Canada and Mexico allowed for the free flow of people. Not citizenship, but no limits on length of stay.
Also we should legalize all drugs and diminish the role of the cartel to what the mob is today. Sanitation and construction. 6/20/2018 5:47:22 PM |

It’s not hard to imagine a system that is light years more humane than our current (even excluding family separation, there is plenty of other legacy stuff that is fucked up), while still providing decent vetting and some control on numbers.
For instance, instead of ICE thugs kicking in doors and dragging people away, why can’t we enforce E-verify laws (probably after improving the system some) on businesses that are also cheating immigration laws? 6/20/2018 7:44:02 PM |

JFC, Pelosi and Schumer fucking suck.
Maxine Waters isn’t great or anything given her history but nothing she said was even close to a physically threat and these two “leaders” are out there condemning her and complaining about civility.
Steve King is out there openly retweeting nazi memes and the GOP leadership doesn’t say shit. There is a reason Democrats suck at politics.

The implication here is that representatives of the state should be above reproach from the demos. It illustrates a pretty deep contempt for the citizenry and the basic concept of democracy.

Quote : | "It is telling that many of those who make their living in the political industrial complex, whether Democrat or Republican or Washington Post editorial page, find the idea of socially shunning people because of their politics to be abhorrent. Their shudders are a symptom of the fact that DC is indeed a swamp—a friendly swamp, where all the gators and slugs and mudfish meet up at the end of the day for cocktails, because to them, politics is a job. To the rest of us, politics is the use of power in a way that has very real effects on our lives. Poverty is an affliction of history and the failure to remedy history’s crimes, of greed and self-dealing and the tax code. Sickness is often an affliction of the political decision not to build a fair and equitable health care system, so that a small number of people can get rich instead. Tens of millions of people around the world suffer under dictatorships that are supported by America to serve our own economic ends. People die because of political decisions every day. Politics is real. This is what is on one side of our current disagreement: death, and human rights, and freedom, and equality. And this is what is on the other side: wanting to eat at a nice restaurant without having anyone remind you that you are ruining people’s lives. The sides of this scale are not even close to balancing yet.
This is all going to get more extreme. And it should. We are living in extreme times. The harm that is being done to all of us by the people in the American government is extreme. To imagine that Mexican immigrants should happily cook for and serve meals to people who enable a man who is determined to demonize and persecute them as subhuman criminals is far more outrageous than the idea that those enablers should not be served in restaurants. I do not believe that Trump administration officials should be able to live their lives in peace and affluence while they inflict serious harms on large portions of the American population. Not being able to go to restaurants and attend parties and be celebrated is just the minimum baseline here. These people, who are pushing America merrily down the road to fascism and white nationalism, are delusional if they do not think that the backlash is going to get much worse. Wait until the recession comes. Wait until Trump starts a war. Wait until the racism this administration is stoking begins to explode into violence more frequently. Read a fucking history book. Read a recent history book. The U.S. had thousands of domestic bombings per year in the early 1970s. This is what happens when citizens decide en masse that their political system is corrupt, racist, and unresponsive. The people out of power have only just begun to flex their dissatisfaction. The day will come, sooner that you all think, when Trump administration officials will look back fondly on the time when all they had to worry about was getting hollered at at a Mexican restaurant. When you aggressively fuck with people’s lives, you should not be surprised when they decide to fuck with yours. " |

Her platform is fine other than the job's guarantee, which is basically the (euro) conservative response to a UBI and not really possible in a future world where automation means everyone having a full time job just won't be a thing anymore. Otherwise, I can't imagine why any Democrat would be upset about a progressive young latina winning a primary over an old white dude. We aren't in that future world quite yet and UBI is increasingly being seen as a way for conservatives to strip other benefits.
The jobs guarantee is a pretty great idea for now. Plenty of work out there that needs to be done that doesn't manifest itself organically in our capitalist hellworld.
Quote : | "A Federal Jobs Guarantee would create a baseline quality for employments that guarantees a minimum $15 wage (pegged to inflation), full healthcare, and paid child and sick leave for all. This proposal would dramatically upgrade the quality of employment in the United States, by providing training and experience to workers while bringing much-needed public services to our communities in areas such as parks service, childcare and environmental conservation.
Furthermore, a federal jobs guarantee program would establish a floor for wages and benefits for the nation’s workforce. This program would provide a baseline minimum wage of $15 an hour and guarantee for public workers a basic benefits package, including healthcare and childcare. By investing in our own workforce, we can lift thousands of American families out of poverty." |

I have mixed feelings about it, tbh.
I'm glad to see someone young fighting for progressive, sensible values, but I also worry this is going to cause the Left to completely rip itself apart, and ultimately leaving the GOP in an even stronger position than it is now.
Yeah, we need change, and a lot of it. I am sick of Nancy Pelosi and the limo driving liberal stereotypes that have made the Dems into a bunch of elite, rich dbags that are full of BS. The Left can't keep kicking the can down the road and expect to regain control. A return to the Obama Days, or even the Clinton 90s isn't good enough.
But for all the people crowing about how this victory is 'proof' that Bernie should have won, blah blah blah, I want everyone to remember that 1: Clinton beat Bernie in the primary, 2: Clinton won the popular vote.
If this is a unifying catalyst for the Left to get on the same page and get shit done, fantastic. If this is going to be the beginning of an ugly schism between the hard left and the moderate left, I am deeply worried about how easily the GOP can fuck things up even more during the infighting. See: SCOTUS 6/27/2018 11:56:49 AM |

^^^ Worst part is Trump isn't even paying attention to them. They keep trying to treat him as a good faith actor, thinking he'll let them gain some ground, but he just keeps making a mockery of everything. He has his supporters throwing actual poop at a restaurant.
It's embarrassing too they keep trying to dismiss Ocasio, when this is the first news in a LOONGGG time that could give democrats some actual media attention to talk about policy, and they're completely blowing it.
If the Democrats manage to flip Congress in November, it will be in spite of Pelosi and Schuler's leadership, but they don't seem to be aggressively pursuing this goal, just like they let the supreme court nomination slip away, just like Hillary let Trump gain on her. 6/27/2018 12:21:11 PM |

American gun-culture has always been a counter-revolutionary force. It targets and panders to right-wing reactionaries. If gun ownership was really about preventing tyranny and allowing the citizenry to resist fascism, they wouldn't let us have them. The only time the state restricts fire arms is when black-marxist radicals march in arms on state capitals. The state is perfectly fine with gun ownership as long as it is not a threat to the existing power structures that threaten private property or corporate capital.
That's why the NRA is openly targeting a latina socialist. 6/27/2018 1:30:30 PM |
