In order to still believe the Newsweek story, you need to think this guy hatched a brilliant plan to protect his identity by acting like a clueless old man and calling Bitcoin "bitcom."

^This is going to end up in court. A US federal judge already declared it a currency. I can understand the IRS wanting to claim it for tax purposes, but I dont see why it cant be valued as a currency. They are more likely to get more out of it if they do.

Whos to not claim that they lost money mining the coins vs when they cashed out. Then its a tax break for them. That and try to make all these exchanges actually submit tax documents, along with all the offshore banks to follow US regulations.

tl;dr: If you keep good records, stick with FIFO; without records, the IRS assumes a $0 basis so all Bitcoin sales, or purchases with Bitcoin, would get fully taxed at the short-term capital-gains rate.

There are lots of online merchants accepting them through Coinbase: TigerDirect, Dell and Expedia. The problems attaining them still exist and it doesn't offer anything over credit card if you are buying something from a reputable online merchant and is arguably worse experience if you have to buy the bitcoin and then use them.

If you are buying drugs online or donating to something like Wikileaks then it's still strong there.

Turns out Wright gave demonstrations on his own computer. Long story short, he took an early transaction off the block chain and tried to make it seem like he was able to sign an arbitrary message (spoilers: he wasn't, but on his own machine he can make it look like anything). Andresen "verified" this signature, but he didn't have access to the original message. Most likely just a hash, which he assumed was a hash of his message, but was really just junk bytes from the old transaction.
