Has anyone ever been to the ACC Tournament? I've already booked my flight to NYC but I'm wondering how much tickets go up or down as seeding becomes clear. Is it better to just buy a whole bunch of cheap seats today at $10 a seat or should I wait until it's closer? How much of the arena actually fills for the non-championship games that aren't Duke vs. Carolina?
I don't think there's much chance of us playing on Tuesday. I'm thinking we end up either a 5-6 seed Wednesday or squeak in as a 4 seed on Thursday (we'd have to win out and Clemson would have to drop one - could be tonight @VT; we could also lose one if Clemson drops two if I'm doing this right).
Right now I fly in Tuesday night and back Saturday morning. I'll pay whatever it takes to come back Sunday if we do somehow make the finals. 2/21/2018 1:45:49 PM |

I've only ever gone when it was in Greensboro and there weren't so many byes. It was a lot easier to buy series tickets off of people whose team lost the first game. 2/21/2018 1:49:31 PM |

If VT were tied with this group too they would get the 2 seed by default by being the only one to beat UVA. But since they aren't, the rest of the process takes more time to research." |
If there were a 4 way tie at 12-6 with NCSU, Duke, UNC and Clemson, the 2 seed would be either us or UNC. Since none of us beat UVA, the tiebreaker would be the highest winning percentage against the the group tied at #2. Ours is 60%. UNC's would be higher if they win the final game against Duke. Clemson and Duke would have no chance at the #2 seed in this case (.4 and .5/.25 respectively.)2/21/2018 2:10:13 PM |

I went twice when it was in greensboro before conference expansion. Tickets for the first full day were tough since everyone wanted to see their team play, however once a team lost you could scoop up tickets from the losing fans fairly easily. I always had tickets for the entire tournament so I didn't have to try and get a ticket there.
My guess is that with all the byes it may be easier to pick up tickets at the event (since someone's team will have already lost), but I have no clue.2/21/2018 7:53:16 PM |

So unless I'm missing something, if we win out and VT loses any one of its three remaining games (Louisville, Duke, @Miami), we basically lock up a top 4 seed in the ACC tournament assuming at least one of Duke or Carolina stays above us. We would hold the tiebreaker over Clemson since we split the head-to-head but we beat both Duke and Carolina while Clemson did neither (and we both lost to UVA)2/21/2018 9:41:02 PM |

VT finishes out with LVille, Duke, and Miami Clem has GT, FSU, and Syracuse
So I would say since VT has the harder schedule, them winning tonight was optimal because it set Clemson back and VT is more likely to lose at least 2 of their last games.
Would have been nice to have Syracuse to beat UNC though to keep that in play. 2/21/2018 9:55:01 PM |

^Yeah saw that earlier and ran some scenarios. I would say ideal situation would be to win out and somehow find a way into the 3 spot. I want nothing to do with the number 5 team in a 4 v 5 matchup which is almost guaranteed to be a really good team and then having to play UVA as the 1 v 4 matchup would be brutal.
That said being State I am totally expecting to lose out and drop the first tourney game. 2/21/2018 11:34:01 PM |

I think that's close, but Clemson did beat Carolina so we would be even there. Regardless, the Duke win will be the tiebreaker between us and Clemson.
We have the 5 seed if we win out, we will get the 4 if either VT loses or Carolina loses to Duke, and the 3 if both happen. It gets a little more complicated if Carolina only loses to Duke and/or if Duke loses 2/32/22/2018 9:11:43 AM |

^ very hopeful outlook, but I have a bad feeling about FSU. We didnt play very well against BC beyond shooting lights out in that first half, but they played like sh!t, so we coasted. A little worried about that game myself, but if we continue this trend of avoiding the ol' NCSS, I don't see as it's going to be too much to ask to beat FSU at home. 2/22/2018 11:26:54 AM |

I'm pretty sure if we win out we're almost guaranteed to be either #2 or #3.
If we win out and Duke wins out (or only loses to Syracuse), the order will be: UVA, Duke, NC St, UNC, Clemson
But let's say Duke loses to Syracuse, beats VT, loses to UNC, finishes 12-6. UNC wins out, 13-5, and becomes the 2 seed. Duke, Clemson, NC State go 12-6. We beat Duke, Duke beat Clemson, Clemson 1-1 against us.
To break the tie between us and Clemson... we both lost to Virginia. Both went 1-1 against UNC. So the next team in line is Duke, which means we would win the tie breaker over Clemson since we beat Duke and Clemson did not. The order would be UVA, UNC, NC St, Duke, Clemson.
We can still finish #2 if: - We win out, AND - Duke loses at least 2 of 3, AND - VT loses at least 1, AND - UNC loses at least 1
But this is probably the strangest possiblity: - We win out, AND - VT wins out, AND - Clemson wins out, AND - Duke loses to UNC, AND - UNC loses to Miami
Here's what happens...
- VT would hold the tie breaker over NC St, UNC, and Duke, set as #2 seed. - Clemson, UNC, and NC St were all 1-1 against each other, and all lost to UVA and VT. - Clemson loses tie-breaker based on record vs Duke. Duke #5, Clemson #6. - NC St and UNC both beat Duke, so to break the tie we have to compare their two records against the next team in the rankings which could be FSU, Miami, Louisville, or Syracuse, OR a tied combination of the group (the tie breaker would be the combined record against all those tied teams). - FSU, Syracuse, and Louisville likely drop from this group since this scenario needs them to each lose 2 more games, so Miami has the highest probability of being the top remaining team in that group... - ...but both UNC and NC St will have lost to them meaning they can't be used as a tie breaker. - So if FSU, Syracuse, and Louisville are all tied... UNC would have a combined record of 2-1 against this group and NC St would be 3-0. - UVA, VT, NC St, UNC, Duke, Clemson
If it has to go farther down the line, UNC is 2-0 against ND while NC St is 1-1, so UNC would be #3 and we'd be #4.

You don't break ties individually like that in the ACC. Since we all would have the same record against #1 UVA and #2 UNC the tiebreaker would be winning percentage against the teams tied for #3. #3 NCSU (2-1 = .667) #4 Duke (1-1 = .500) #5 Clemson (1-2 = .333).
Tiebreakers in ACC basketball are pretty straightforward and simple. And as long as we're in a group with Duke, we'll have a good shot at winning any 3 or 4 way tie because we only played them once and won. That helps our winning percentage out in any tiebreakers with them and teams they had to play twice.2/22/2018 1:04:39 PM |

^It doesn't sound like the overall record vs tied group is used when the team in question is a part of that group.
Either way it's the same result (#3 NC State, #4 Duke, #5 Clemson), but I thought it would be because Clemson loses tie breakers to both. 2/22/2018 2:56:11 PM |

I'm pretty skeptical about our chances of beating FSU or Louisville, let alone both. It's all what-if until each game is played, then the what-ifs change.
VT, Clemson, and Duke all have games Saturday, we play FSU Sunday, Duke vs VT Monday, Miami vs UNC Tuesday. By then we will have a completely different picture to work with.2/22/2018 3:00:20 PM |

ok, i just sat down and did some research. when there is a tied group, head to head winning percentage vs the group is the first tiebreaker (just like in a 2 way tie head to head record is the first tie breaker.) so, we would win the tiebreaker with .667, duke would be 4th at .500 and clemson would be 5th at .333.
there is no comparing individual head to head results until there are only 2 teams tied.

Beating FSU is going to be tough, just a bad matchup for us and they've had a week off to rest/prepare.
We HAVE to win @GT, it would be really RPI deflating and would be a "Bad Loss".
Louisville looks like a team that has packed it in. They'll also be coming off 2 tough games(@VT, UVA) and could potentially be looking at a 4 game losing streak coming into our place on 2 days rest from playing UVA. That's a game we really need to find a way to win, a lot of things working in our favor for that game.
Finish the last 3 games going 2-1, end up 21-9(11-7), don't really care about our ACCT seeding, but that should basically make us a lock for the tournament even with a short ACCT. 2/23/2018 6:29:10 AM |
