"Safariland makes the best retention holsters."

Thanks, been browsing their selection. I think I'd rather go with a OTW concealment holster than a hefty duty model, but that made me rethink the need for a retention mechanism. Any opinion there? I'm looking at these two at the moment

Bianchi - 83

PaddleLok™ Holster

The 83 offers an Auto Retention™ feature which automatically secures the gun upon reholstering. The internal FingerLok™ retention device secures the pistol by the trigger guard. To draw, the middle finger sweeps the release lever allowing the pistol to be drawn in a straight out motion. The non-slip, contoured paddle offers maximum grip on the trousers and belt, and is adjustable for cant and height. Can be worn cross draw or strongside. Made with premium grade full grain cowhide.
Key Features

Auto Retention™ automatically retains weapon upon holstering
FingerLok™ retention device secures pistol by the trigger guard upon holstering the firearm
Non-slip, contoured paddle features molded elastomer ridges and offers easy on/off convenience
Paddle offers a variable range of cant and height adjustability
Fits up to 1.75" (45 mm) belt widths
Available in full grain leather, Plain Tan or Plain Black finish
"

I like the idea of the middle-finger release and adjustable height and cant

Safariland - 518
Thumb Break Concealment Paddle Holster

The Model 518 Paddle Holster is a suede lined, custom formed, thumb break holster. Its medium to hi-ride carry, wraparound design, and user-adjustable tensioning device provide excellent weapon retention. This paddle holster is thermal molded from SafariLaminate™ and features a wide, suede covered, self-locking polymer paddle, making the 518 lightweight, durable, and comfortable. No belt is necessary with this holster.
Key Features

Medium- to hi-ride carry, wraparound design
Adjustable tensioning device
Lightweight with custom-formed thumb break retention
Suede-lined
Thermal-molded SafariLaminate™ construction with suede lining
Available in Plain Black
"

Do the thumb latches do anything but keep it from jostling out? Are they designed for carrying cocked and locked?

And I've up till now bought spring steel clip ITW holsters or pancakes, never tried a paddle holster other than for fit in a shop. Do they stay put well or are they pretty much for "range day" carrying?

Bianchi makes junk and that Safariland is just as big as their ALS belt holsters. The Safariland 6377 or 6379 are both very concealable.

Thanks for the info. The 6377 looks ideal but they don't appear to make it for a 1911, can't seem to find an analogous model with their "holsterfinder" nvm

I'll keep poking around. Thanks again hkrock and Restricted

btw, i shot some of those M193 pulldown bullets through my AR yesterday and they shrank my groups to ~2" at 100 yds. much better than the no-name 55 gr FMJs i got from Georgia Arms at the gun show and cheaper. i got the pulldown bullets from Hi-Tech Ammo.

How would you compare the pulled bullets to more premium bullets? I don't go through enough right now to need to go budget but I would like to stockpile on the cheap.

sumfoo, they are kind of cool from a historical perspective, but they are overpriced pieces of shit in general.

ive never seen a gun with so much barrel whip in my life.

you wont be able to hit a goddamn thing with it i promise you, and you wont find one with a decent barrel or gas system either.

in canada the stupid things cost like 250 bucks. here they are almost 900. here the magazines are also like 100+.

there isnt really a good semiauto 54r for the money. even if you find a deal on a vepr or PSL youre still always going to be limited by shit mags.

the veprs were supposed to have single stack 10 rounders back in may but i still havent seen one, not even a picture.

theyre probably going to look retarded anyway.

i saw a guy at the range the other day with a 16 inch barrel 54r vepr and i assume he was trying to get rid of ammo for no apparent reason too.

i wish he would have shot himself with that thing.

the ones i got are very good for the price. i can't afford to buy gamekings, v-maxes, bergers, etc. 1k at a time just to plink them away.

http://hi-techammo.com/

that's the website. the ones i got are M193 - 55 gr. - FMJBT - Air pulled, no marks. you can't tell they were loaded.

Well, er ah, Owilly.. I have plead guilty to an SVT40 and it is no bullseye rifle. However, mine was nearly new, and after about 200 rounds of shoot two and swab, shoot two and swab, I can get everything in about six inches at 325 yards. But the hell with that! They are soooo groovey, especially with a rabbit fur hat and some Wellingtons and of course the bayonet!

PM sent on the ammo

youre one of the few lucky ones then i suppose, what did you pay for it?

i never said they werent cool as hell, i mean they called it stalins m14.

its just too pricey a surplus gun for me to gamble on and ive gambled on quite a few...

the only surplus rifles where ive never been disappointed were yugo m24/47 8mm mausers. every one ive ever had was a peach. i think theyre better than their german counterparts personally and far superior to any other nations (like spain).

I got this one from a friends father. He wanted to get his load thinned out and had these under the BED for the last 20 years and I did it to fill in the table at no charge. He is a neat old fellow. He had four sequentially numbered Enfield No 4 still in the grease and paper, the only 1947 Moisen made in China I have ever seen, a WW2 M1, Savage 22mag / 20 ga, and a mint marlin 30-30 and the SVT40. I had them on the table at Dixie G&N with a price for the Enfields of 2k, take 1.8k. there was another dealer behind a tire kicker and the minute he left, the dealer waited a heartbeat and dropped the cash!

I sold all his gear and no one wanted the SVT40 at his price of 700, so I bought it for $600. THEN he said oh there is some ammo in the garage - 2300 rounds, some from the early 50's hand wrapped in paper and tied with string by some Babuska in Kiev. Oh and on ammo crate was the bayonet and scabbard in heavy oil.

Yeah, reloading is a must for those these days. Once the surplus dries up then that is pretty much it right? I don't know a ton about those but my buddy who does would reload for his.

The 98K is pretty sweet too. Mosins on the other hand, if that floats your boat then that is fine but I don't see the point in wasting time/money on one of those.

I got an unissued sniper with a repro scope. It is cheap shooting and I like the reticule with the spike and posts. No medals at camp perry, but for trap and track, and for its low tech, it is great. Remember that Carlos Haithcock went against if NVA foe who mastered the rifle. Even he, in a Mil Channel interview said the bad was effective.

Lol @ the mosin hate

Is it a cheap shit gun: yes does it shoot ok: yes

The only thing shitty about them is they are un scopeable if you didn't get the sniper version.

I mean fuck I picked mine up for $85 unfired packed un cosmoline.

Cheap gun, cheap ammo and it will certainly help you to develope a tolerance to recoil.

K31 is awesome as are things like the krag but they don't shoot much better than the mosin. They are just rare and have unique features that also have a downfall.

Just sold my CZ 75b because I never really shot it well. That being said, I have the proceeds from it burning a hole in my pocket and Im looking for something new. Id go 9mm or 45...are 226s and 220s worth it? Bud's (I live in KY) has an all stainless 226 with factory rosewood grips (sexy) and a two tone 220...both lovely to look at. The 220 (there are two actually) is 625 and 675, the 226 is 725.

Thoughts? Worth it, not worth it? Look at other things in this price range (half decent 1911, HK USP compact) or am I better off just getting something in the 500 range (od green glock of some sort, etc)?

I love my 226. It's extremely well balanced and one of the most accurate 9mm's I have ever owned. The action is smooth in DA and it has a nice clean break SA. Get it. 220 is an awesome gun, too. It comes down to whether you want the .45 or 9, IMHO. Win-win.

^^no, not yet. maybe in the future.

^duly noted. I wanted more bang than a .223, and can still have .223/5.56 with a barrel change.

I looked at building a 7.62x39 ar, but saw issues with bolts and magazine (tapered cartridge).

What do you think about it other than it being overpriced 7.62?

i guess if you feel like jumping through the hoops and suppressing it, then it's great. that's really the only civilian purpose i see.

for hunting? doesn't do anything .30-30 won't do.

it's not a target round

too expensive to plink with

it's just the newest craze. it'll pass just like 6.8 did.

300 AAC blk kinda sucks IMHO, the sub sonic round is ballistically equivilent to a .45 220 grain 900ft/sec just with a better ballistic coefficient.

The full power 300 AAC blk is still way way way lower in power than 7.62x39 and is less than half as powerful as .308.

Basically an ar has its place and 300 AAC is a round for the recoil sensitive to say they shoot a .30 cal.

Basically since the sub-sonic is great for a silencer that is the only legit use I can see for it... And my .45 is just as capable at throwing a slow heavy bullet quietly through the air.
