Yeah, now that you mention it, I think I did manage to get the light to come on when I was using Red Laser one time, so I guess the only way to activate the LED is to use the Camera APIs. It's just retarded that "turn on the light" isn't an option you can assign to the triple click. I'd think that would be the most obvious feature ever. 7/1/2010 3:47:39 PM |

Just in case anyone was wondering (and I'm all but certain that nobody was) you can use the microsim cards from the 4s in an iPhone 3GS. (or I guess any other phone that takes SIM cards) All it takes is a little tape to hold it in the right position and it works just like a normal SIM.
These are the things I do at 5am when I'm bored and can't sleep. Plus I wanted to try out the new version of MyWi on iOS4. 7/2/2010 4:49:15 AM |

lol. Shifting the blame back to AT&T. "We'll change the numbers of bars to display your crappy signal so you can blame AT&T for your call dropping when you hold it wrong"
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/02/apple-iphone-4-reception-problems-a-software-issue-fix-coming/
Quote : | "Apple: iPhone 4 reception problem is a software issue, fix coming in 'a few weeks' By Thomas Ricker posted Jul 2nd 2010 at 8:32AM Breaking News
Whoa, Apple just admitted that there's an issue with the iPhone 4's reception, but it might not be what you think: Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.
To fix this, we are adopting AT&T's recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone's bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.
We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
What's troubling is that this is the second time Apple has blamed signal strengh / reception issues on software and it doesn't fully explain calls dropping and data degradation when the iPhone 4 is held in a very particular (but common) way. It's also worth noting that Apple, in no way admits to an antenna design flaw. Read the full press release after the break." |

Haha they're covering it up. On a side note I have yet to have a dropped call and can finally make calls in houses/areas I wasn't able to make calls from on my 3GS. I'm pretty happy. The battery life is killer too. Used it all day yesterday and the battery was only down to 35% by midnight after charging it the prior night.
^ok i get your point. But what's the point at which phones are too big? I think there's a reason Apple stuck with 3.5. You keep getting "slightly larger" you're going to end up with a tablet phone in your pocket. I've got great eyesight and the iPhone displays more pixels than the EVO. After playing with it for a while it was pretty obvious it was lower res than the iPhone.

based on what i've read, I think more than likely there are two issues, a cosmetic software issue with how signal strength is calculated and displayed, and then the actual issue of the way most people hold the bare metal causing enough signal attenuation to disrupt calls in specific, but common use cases. All this could have been avoided with a simple clear coating on the metal.

It seems like such a simple problem to fix a) hand out free bumpers, b) make sure all new phones have some sort of coating so that the problem doesn't happen again, c) tell early adopters who don't want a bumper they can bring their phone in and get it replaced/fixed -- even if they have to wait a month or two for demand to subside.
Will it cost them a couple million dollars? Sure. Will it be a much better act of good faith than trying to pretend it's not an issue? Definitely. 7/2/2010 10:29:04 AM |

I bet the antennas can be individually shut off in software and what they do is shut off one of them and increase the number of bars shown in software to compensate. Then claim it was never a hardware problem. 7/2/2010 10:31:00 AM |

My wife has an iPhone 3GS and she's not breaking that contract for an iPhone4, but she agrees that my EVO is pretty awesome.
I have no battery issues, and the phone is definitely not too big for me or my pockets... but I'm a big guy. The iPhone screen resolution is pretty awesome, but they need to increase that screen size a bit, even just taking it up to like 3.8 or 4 inches. And IMO the iPhone OS sucks, but I haven't tried iOS4, so maybe that thing is a huge improvement...? 7/2/2010 11:24:51 AM |

Oddly enough, the people comparing these phones always ignore some of the biggest advantages of the iphone in their review.
Many people, like me, have large itunes libraries, much of which cannot be converted to an open format without quality loss. Having a device that takes those songs that previously resided on the ipod's is a must. I am on my second head unit in my car that interfaces well with an ipod/iphone. Being able to seemlessly connect my iphone for charging through this interface, as well as control the music library from the head unit is pretty much a requirement for me. I do not want to be fumbling with my phone controls to select what music I want to play.
I am very happy with my iPhone 4 purchase, but I will be looking harder at the competition next go around. 7/2/2010 11:37:53 AM |

That's what she said.
I spent a whopping $6 total on ebay for a couple of hard cases and 3 sets of back+front screen protectors. I'm not expecting too much from the cases, but can't wait for the screen/back protectors. As much as I despise buying an Apple OEM accessory, I do like the bumpers they came out with. If this crappy plastic one works for a little while, I can wait for aftermarket "bumpers."
Anyone found an inexpensive cover/bumper that they'd recommend (other than otter box or a silicone sleeve)?7/2/2010 11:39:21 AM |

So if all iPhone's have this "wrong formula to determine how many bars of signal strength they are getting" then how does that explain why my 3G gets 3 bars at my house when I hold it left handed while my iPhone 4 gets no service in the same place when I hold it left handed? 7/2/2010 12:15:37 PM |
Prospero All American 11662 Posts user info edit post |
This may fix the display issue so no one can say, "look I have no signal on the display", but with the update, it could mean it shows 1 bar and you drop signal everytime you hold the phone wrong still.

You're still going to lose signal every time you hold the phone "wrong" you're just going to drop from the 1 or 2 bars you had in the first place to no signal instead of dropping from 4 or 5 bars to no signal. It's a complete BS explanation and ignores a lot of the issues out there such as, why do previous iphones get much better signal in the same places if it's a common software issue, why do speed tests show a massive drop in data speeds when the iPhone 4 is held left handed that doesn't occur on previous iphones, etc.
^It's not even shining shit, it's saying the shit was shined to begin with and now we're just going to remove the shine so you can see that it was shit all along

^^ There's likely still a hardware issue, the point of the software update is to filter out the noise. Instead of listening to all the people going on about OMG THE BARS!!! THEY GO AWAY!!!, they can hear from people who are actually having real problems (where they can't actually make / receive a call). After all, when you cut through all the noise, everyone who has tested and reviewed these things for real (ars, anandtech et al) have said the same thing: bar issues aside, this phone gets signal in more places than previous iPhones did, and ultimately that's what matters. The annoying thing about issues like this (from a troubleshooting standpoint) is that they could release a software update that instead shows 5 bars all the way down to -110dbm and hardly any one would be screaming and carrying on the way they are now, even though they would still have the exact same "problem".
That isn't to say this isn't still a hardware issue, or that even if you can make and receive calls it isn't still an issue to be solved, just that it's a whole lot easier to get real data when everyone isn't crying about their bars.

You're way overstating the problem. Do you have one of these phones yourself?
The new iPhones generally get BETTER reception than the old phones, unless you are holding the phone a certain way.
My Droid can lose 2 bars depending how i hold it, and ALL bars if i'm in my apt (because my signal is poor their anyway). This doesn't change the stupid (supposed) issue with the iPhone that shorting the 2 antennas seems to be the single point of failure, but it's easy to not hold the phone there, especially if you know youre going to lose signal.
I've gotten to the point with my phone where i hold it from the belt clip all the time anyway, because the microphone is so terrible on the Droid I need all the clarity i can get.7/2/2010 1:13:13 PM |

^^Yes I have one myself, I have since the 23rd and noticed the signal problems about an hour after I started using it. I also have an original iPhone and an iPhone 3G.
The phone does get better signal than the 3G if it's sitting on a table untouched but the minute you pick it up it gets way worse signal than the 3G unless you're constantly aware of how you're holding it and hold it in a really unnatural way.
I'm not overstating the problem at all. For people like me, who spend a lot of time in areas with moderate to good, but not great, signal the problem is huge. 7/2/2010 1:54:17 PM |
