7.62 on the gas gun. One 50 is mine, though I rarely shoot it. The bolt gun is .300 win mag, my fav.

I am thinking about getting the LaRue Stealth upper for my AR15 to do some longer range shooting. I heard a rumor that they are basically the same as the OBR uppers but I haven't been able to find out if that is the case or not. I definitely want an OBR to replace my AR10 one day but that gun can still more than outshoot me.

Any recommendations for a different upper in the same price range? (the stealth is $1200)

I was thinking about the Ranier Ultramatch as another option. Really want to get into long range shooting now that I am reloading and have the funds for a decent rifle.

By "110" he is probably referring to M110, as in the Knight's Armament 7.62 AR variant. Or you could of course build your own. The Rainier Ultramatch 18" is supposed to be a good barrel for the price. You can pick out your other components from them and they'll put it together for you.

^^ any reason I should get one of those over the Stealth? I have always found LaRue to be top notch but I am less familiar with the precision build world than just typical ARs. I want to get an order in pre-election because who knows what the wait lists would look like if Obama gets reelected, I have heard the stealth is a 3 month wait typically so I could handle that.

Can't go wrong with LaRue. I'd splurge for the 18" OBR, though. That thing is a beast that can ring an 8" plate at 1 mile no problem - which is very impressive for a gas gun

Oh trust me, if I could get the OBR that would be it. It is going to be tough enough to get the Stealth upper with all the firearms purchases I have made lately. The lower I have is pretty nice though so just a nice upper should be plenty.

you have to reload 10mm to use it to its full potential. handloaded 10mm is powerful enough for ethical deer hunting, but the factory options aren't imo.

Well, I am already tired of changing out dies on my single stage. Ordered the lock-n-load conversion kit so now I can just set it and forget it.

Also, the lock rings on lee dies are pure garbage.

hornady lock rings are the best. the brass set screw on rcbs lock rings will slip. i use the hornady lock rings on Lee dies and it's just as good as the lock-n-load or Lee Breech Lock bushing systems.

why the hell doesn't ruger make a .454 with longer than 7.5" barrel

I think I've given up on a 22wmr plinker for fun as my next purchase and gonna go ahead and get what I've always really wanted, a .44 revolver. For the longest time I wanted a S&W 629 but lately I've fallen in lust with the Ruger Blackhawks, particularly the Standard 10.5".

But while ogling them online I looked at Ruger's Super Redhawk .454 options and they only make the 2.5" alaskan and a 7.5" standard. Why offer a hunting cartridge with a max 7.5" bbl? Weight/balance issues for a barrel stout enough for that round?

get a 629DX or stealth hunter and don't waste your time with the ruger. I'm a big fan of ruger, but I much prefer shooting my 629 to anything ruger makes.

Mind going into more detail? I suppose the 629 looks a bit heavier with slightly less bore axis offset, so I can imagine recoil being more manageable...but that's just a guess, I've never fired either

the different in trigger pull on the two guns is night and day. Not that the ruger has a bad feeling trigger, but the 629 has the smoothest DA pull of any revolver I've shot. There's also no hesitation in the trigger pull right before the hammer drops on the Smith, while there is one on the Ruger.

You definitely want the full lug on a revoler in magnum rounds to keep recoil down, and I personally find the extra weight at the end of the barrel makes the gun easier to aim.

^^^^Super Redhawks in 454 come in 9.5" barrels. Ruger's site usually only shows what's currently in production. You should be able to find a used or new old stock 9.5" SRH.

You should feel my GP-100 and SRH. A simple light stoning (or dry firing) and $15 spring change will make a Ruger as light and smooth as any S&W.
Having said that, pull weight and smoothness isn't everything in a DA trigger. Rugers and S&W have different geometry. The trigger travel in a Ruger will be long with little stacking while S&Ws are shorter but stack up more near the end. One isn't better than the other unless you can shoot as fast as Miculek.

I've posted on the differences between the two brands before. Saying you're wasting your time on a Ruger DA revolver is poor advice. They're both great quality and worth the money you pay. Which one you should get just depends on what you like and what you want to do with it.

Gotcha. I always figured the reason to have a big caliber revolver was more for protecting yourself when around dangerous game. I know people down here that will hunt hogs with them but they don't really care about a one shot kill since they are a huge nuisance and not shot for any reason other than to kill them.

The one time I did shoot a 44mag I was shooting incredibly tight groups for my ability so I can definitely see being able to take a deer within 50m, more if I was a better shot.

As long as you are shooting within your capable range there should be no trouble achieving a 1 shot kill on deer with a .44 mag or larger revolver. I intend to carry me new (to me) Redhawk .44mag into the woods in case a deer comes from behind me or close in to my right side. I had 2 within 20 yards last time before I could get a shot because it requires a good bit of movement in a treestand to shoot a rifle at a deer to your 5 O'clock when you are a right-eye dominant shooter.

Paerabol, I don't know how often you get to the Charlotte area, but I would sale you 12x12 square AR500 steel targets for half ^that place's prices.

$40 instead of $80.

I have some 24x24 inch plates too

30-30 and large handguns aren't going to do anything to these. You would just shoot them up and them paint them again, good as new.

They also have holes drilled in them for hanging (I think), I can check though. PM me if interested!

I actually bought one big sheet and then had it cut to pieces. I didn't know it would be so tough though, and ended up with much more than I need.

I have a bunch unpainted/unshot ready to go. No shipping obviously if you come pick it up (Huntersville/Yadkinville).
