I agree that in general UNC is capable of getting a very good coach so it isn't necessarily a good thing that Butch was fired. But let's be real, no one's gonna want to touch their football program with a ten foot pole for the next five years. Sanctions are coming for sure, no one wants to coach through that. 7/27/2011 8:23:21 PM |

Yeah I posted something to this effect earlier but to make this good for us we have to capitalize on it. They're still the big national name and the name will carry a lot at least with non 5 star in-state recruits. We have to make sure we stay strong and keep pounding them into the dirty on rivalry games and then maybe we can prove we have the staying power. If we let off the gas it will make their recovery easier quicker.7/27/2011 8:24:06 PM |

I just don't agree with this when it comes to football. They're obviously the big national name, along with Duke, when it comes to basketball
But we're the school getting the top in-state prospects like McLendon, Baker and Mario...they're getting guys like Marvin Austin from Washington, DC through their shady shenanigans
UNC football wasn't relevant since Mack Brown, until Butch...but now they're obviously fucked because of Butch, so I don't feel any "sports fears" about them having some monster football program EVER7/27/2011 8:29:04 PM |

They seem to get "big" about once a decade. I fear that at some point it's going to stick.
^ I remember some people on PP predicting sanctions when he was hired, moreso after Blake was announced as an assistant.

Quote : | "CHAPEL HILL -- Statement from Butch Davis:
My family and I were surprised and saddened to learn that I have been relieved of my duties as head football coach at Carolina. I am not naïve enough to have ever considered this situation anything less than a serious matter and a significant priority. I have worked as hard as possible to address all aspects of the program that have been questioned. I fully believe we were on our way to getting past these issues and moving ahead in a positive direction.
My family and I have been able to endure this difficult period in our lives for several reasons: First and foremost, as a family we have known all along that I personally did nothing wrong. That is the truth. Second, we have also had remarkable support from friends, family, the players, our coaching staff and so many others within the Tar Heel community. That these players and coaches were able to achieve the success they did last season, under such circumstances, makes me enormously proud.
Moving forward, I wish only the best for the current team and coaches. For the players in particular, I wish them nothing but success on the field and in the classroom. The coaches already know how I feel about them. I couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and dedication. In fact, during the past year or so, my respect and love for our players, the coaching staff and the football administrative staff has grown enormously. It’s a wonderful group of people and I will miss them all.
For now, I will not be doing any interviews. Perhaps in time I will feel more comfortable about discussing my future. But for now, it’s important to move on as smoothly as possible, because I absolutely do not want to add any further distraction for the players and coaching staff as they approach the 2011 season." |

LOL at UNC fans talking about how far this will set their program back. Yes, the firing and impending sanctions will set the program back...but let's be honest, UNC is not nationally relevant in football, other than some nice recruiting classes. When you're winning 7-8 games a year you can't get setback but so far. It's not that long ago that they were winning 3 games a year. Their program is not where they think it is on a national level. In terms of football success, they are pretty similar to us over the last 5 years (and to hear them talk, we're one of the worst programs ever)...and even not as successful as us over the last decade. 7/27/2011 11:00:36 PM |

From Wiley's Attorney
Quote : | " Joseph B. Cheshire V, the Raleigh lawyer representing the tutor in the middle of the academic misconduct allegations, was unhappy with the decision.
“It’s a sad day for the university that they would cave in to obviously orchestrated efforts to destroy their football program,” said Cheshire, a UNC-CH alumnus, a Tar Heel fan and an attorney with inside knowledge about the NCAA investigation. “It makes absolutely no sense that this happened now. There’s no additional information that justifies this firing of Butch Davis now, and if there is something, they ought to say what it is. This makes no legal sense, this makes no common sense, this makes no institutional sense and no sense for the athletic program or the players in that program.”" |

You are not a football program on the rise when news of the sudden firing of your head coach less than two weeks before the start of practice doesn't make SC before the first commercial break.

Butch Davis is "shocked" he was let go
as much as i want to make fun of that, i have to think he was given every assurance he would be the coach. then he was fired. who would want to coach for a backdoor dealing AD? their program is a goddamn mess right now, and i love it. 7/27/2011 11:18:08 PM |

^Exactly why I was in favor of him being fired. Not because I was "scared of what he was building" in Chapel Hill, like UNC fans said...but because it would just add to the pure chaos of this whole thing. It is an absolute mess. 7/27/2011 11:19:38 PM |

i also wonder how freshman recruits feel about this...it's not like this was old news when they signed. now that Butch has been fired, i've got to wonder if they were told, "Yes, Butch Davis will be your coach"...if so, that's some unethical bullshit, and i would transfer immediately 7/27/2011 11:23:51 PM |

I dont see why they think this was such a random event.
it was the first meeting of the BOT since they were newly elected. It was obviously handed down by them to the AD and told to remove him or get fired yourself.
I see the AD resigning soon anyways.
PROBLEM i see is that now Butch doesnt have to answer to the NCAA anymore. He will Lawyer up and be quiet.

I believe it when they say nothing new came to light, the board of trustees had a big shakeup and this was their first meeting so they basically totally changed their tune and thorp caved in, there are rumors that baddour is pissed about the whole thing, so seems obvious the new guys in charge had a different attitude about butch's program but they prob don't know too much about college football to fire the guy at this point, I'd like to think they had some quick replacement in mind but I really doubt it and they are just going to sink the program more by having some lame duck replacement for a yr 7/28/2011 2:07:26 AM |
